Abstract

Scabies is a global public health problem that affects millions of people worldwide, especially in crowded and underdeveloped places. Similar difficulties arise at Rumak Village, a rural community in West Lombok, where cramped living quarters encourage the development of scabies. The primary goal of this research is to pinpoint the critical factors affecting the village's scabies transmission. Using a cross-sectional methodology, 483 families' preventive practices were investigated between January and July of 2023. Chi-Square tests were used to analyse the data, which were gathered by questionnaires. A p-value threshold of 0.05 and a 95% confidence interval were used for the analysis. The results showed a substantial correlation (p = 0.000) between the occurrence of scabies and poor handwashing habits, poor household cleanliness, sharing personal objects, and infrequent bathing. Scabies is more common in families who bathe only once a day, interchange personal belongings regularly, have dirty surroundings, and wash their hands infrequently.

Abstract

Scabies are a global health problem that affects millions of people around the world, especially those living in densely populated and underprivileged areas. Rumak Village, located in a rural area, is no exception to this problem. Where people often live in crowded conditions, making the transmission of scabies easier. This study aims to analyze the determinants of scabies transmission. This study employed a cross-sectional design to examine the prevention behaviors employed by individuals in Rumak Village to avoid the transmission of scabies, totaling 483 families conducted from January to July 2023. Data collection was done using questionnaires, and data analysis was done using Chi-Square, with a p-value of 0.05 with a 95% confidence interval. The results showed a significant association between hand washing practices, home environmental hygiene, sharing items, and bathing practices with the incidence of scabies in the community, with a p-value of 0.000. Families who do not regularly wash their hands, have less clean environmental conditions, often practice sharing personal items, and bathe 1 time/day have a risk of suffering from scabies in Rumak Village.  Keywords: Determinants, prevalence, scabies

Abstract

Tomato is one of the plants that contain lycopene as an antibacterial. Acne is an infectious disease caused by Staphylococcus epidermidis. Antibiotic treatment starts to become resistant so that plants can be used as alternative treatments. The study aimed to determine the effectiveness of the ethanolic extract of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L) against the growth of Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria in vitro. This type of research is experimental. Extraction was carried out by maceration method with 96% ethanol as solvent. Lycopene extract with concentrations of 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100%. Testing with the paper disk method with five repetitions. Aquadest as a negative control, and tetracycline as a positive control. The results showed that the diameter of the inhibition zone formed in the positive control was 40.36 mm (potent inhibition). Inhibition zones at concentrations of 100%, 80%, 60%, 40%, and 20% had solid inhibitory power. The results of statistical tests showed that the ethanolic extract of tomato (Solanum lycopersycom L) had antibacterial effectiveness against the growth of Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria that causes acne in vitro. The post hoc test shows a significant effect between a T1 concentration of 100% with negative control and positive control

Abstract

Background: Mange, a skin disease caused by the Sarcoptes scabiei mite, poses a serious threat to the health and well-being of both cats and their owners. Clinical manifestations of mange include intense pruritus, erythema, and skin rashes, which may lead to considerable discomfort and psychological distress. In urban environments with high pet density, such as Mataram City, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, the risk of mange transmission increases significantly, especially through close contact with infested animals. Objective: This study aimed to identify factors associated with the incidence of mange among cat owners in Mataram City. Methods: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted from September 2023 to February 2024 across six sub-districts of Mataram City (Ampenan, Cakranegara, Mataram, Sandubaya, Selaparang, and Sekarbela) in West Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia. A total of 269 cat owners were selected using a simple random sampling technique. The independent variables included demographic characteristics (age, gender), behavioral and environmental factors (handwashing practices, home hygiene, history of sharing personal items, pet grooming habits, number of pet cats, history of cat mange, and family history of scabies). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Chi-square tests, and binary logistic regression with a significance level of p < 0.05 and 95% confidence interval (CI), utilizing IBM SPSS version 26. Results: Statistical analysis revealed no significant association between gender and mange infection among cat owners (p = 0.921). However, significant associations were found between mange infection and other variables, including age, handwashing practices, home environmental hygiene, sharing of personal items, pet grooming history, history of cat mange, number of pet cats, and family history of scabies (all with p < 0.001). Conclusion: The incidence of mange infection among cat owners was significantly associated with various socio-behavioral and environmental factors. These findings underscore the importance of integrated public health strategies to improve awareness, facilitate early diagnosis and treatment, and promote effective preventive measures against mange transmission. Abstract

Introduction: The presence of landfills can threaten groundwater quality because the decomposition process of waste containing hazardous chemicals can cause surrounding groundwater pollution. As the amount of waste increases, the risk of environmental pollution around the landfill also increases, especially to groundwater sources used by the local community. The study aims to analyze family health problems related to the use of groundwater located near landfills. Methods: The study used a cross-sectional design around the Kebon Kongok landfill, West Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (WNT), Indonesia. The sample amounted to 300 respondents who met the inclusion criteria. Data analysis was performed descriptively, chi-square test, and binary logistic regression by analyzing the adjusted odds ratio (AOR) results, p-value <0.05, and 95% confidence interval. Results: 164 respondents (54.7%) used well water for their daily needs. The results of the study based on binary logistic regression tests showed a significant relationship between history of diarrhea in children (p=0.002; AOR=3.65), nutritional status of the child (p=0.001; AOR=3.95), maternal history of fetal miscarriage (p<0.001; AOR=4.08), family history of skin disease (p=0.010; AOR=2.75), family history of ARI (p=0.011; AOR=2.72), disability status in the family (p<0.001; AOR=4.10), family history of chronic disease (p<0.001; AOR=4.79), history of mother giving birth to a low birth weight (LBW) infant (p=0.003; AOR: 2.97), and history of mother giving birth to a premature infant (p=0.009; AOR=2.64) with the use of groundwater in families around the landfill. Conclusions: Groundwater use near contaminated waste disposal sites is closely related to family health issues related to diarrhea, nutritional status, fetal miscarriage, skin diseases, ARI, disability, chronic diseases, LBW, and history of mother giving birth to a premature infant. This indicates the need for significant health and environmental interventions to protect surrounding communities from the health risks of using polluted groundwater.

Abstract

Wresah plant (Amomum dealbatum) is one of the typical fruit species from Lombok Island which has a distinctive fragrance and is a member of the ginger-ginger tribe. This study aims to test the ethanol extract of Wresah skin (Amomum dealbatum) as an antibacterial (Staphylococcus aureus) with concentrations of 15%, 30% and 50%. The research method conducted was laboratory experimental. The antibacterial test of Staphyloccocus aureus was carried out with five treatment groups and five repetitions, namely positive control (ciprofloxacin), negative control (distilled water), concentrations of 15%, 30% and 50% using well method and then incubated for 24 hours at a temperature of 370 C. The results of the antibacterial test of ethanol extract of Wresah fruit peel showed inhibition of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria and at concentrations of 15%, 30%, and 50% which produced the largest diameter of the inhibition zone with an average diameter of 2.0 mm. The Kruskal Wallis test showed a statistically significant difference between the three concentrations tested (p < 0.05), which means that Wresah fruit peel extract is able to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. In conclusion, the extract of Wresah fruit peel has demonstrated antibacterial properties against Staphylococcus aureus and can be used as a natural alternative to conventional antibiotics.
