Abstract

This research discusses how ethnic diversity in the city of Sungai Penuh, Jambi, influences the legislative body in playing its political role. Through a case study approach, this research emphasizes the interaction patterns of legislative actors in the legislative process based on ethnic relations, and it conducts interviews to generate descriptive data to reveal the cultural diversity of ethnic groups and the political expression of the legislative institution in Sungai Penuh. The research findings indicate the presence of ethnic diversity in Sungai Penuh, including the Kerinci people (79.73%), Minang (15.73%), Javanese (2.13%), Malay (0.27%), Batak (0.27%), Chinese (0.13%), and Banjar (0.07%). In addition to the Kerinci ethnic group, which is the majority, other ethnic groups are also involved in the legislative institution, such as the Minang, Javanese, and Batak. The election of Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) members from different ethnicities in Sungai Penuh is driven by the support of the same ethnic group as the dominant voters (instrumentalist approach), as well as their significant role in the community. This affects the implementation of priority programs by DPRD, which tends to accommodate the interests of their constituents. Nevertheless, the combination of dominant and minority ethnic groups provides a variety of ideas and approaches in the dynamics of ethnic politics among legislative members.

Abstract

This study looks into identity politics locally, with an emphasis on the role played by religious groups—such as the Religious Harmony Forum (Forum Kerukunan Umat Beragaman/FKUB)—in promoting multiculturalism as a countermeasure to the growth of identity politics. The study’s focus is the Kerinci Regency in Jambi, Indonesia, and it looks at how identity politics and diversity are positioned within the larger Indonesian framework. The research selectively chooses informants, such as the FKUB, the Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu), traditional leaders, and religious figures, using qualitative methods like observation, interviews, and document examination. Results show that a variety of political identification patterns exist across the country according to societal culture, resources, and sociopolitical circumstances. As a result, the FKUB responds with a variety of strategies and tactics. The study also emphasizes how the discourse-centric perspective on multiculturalism hinders its ability to effectively counter identity politics. The research points up difficulties that stand in the way of achieving diversity, such as the consolidation and contestation of identity within Islam. Interfaith conflicts, however, show a downward trend and provide a more nuanced picture of the intricate relationship between identity politics and multiculturalism in Indonesia at the local level.

Abstract

This study examines how and why Salafi groups, recognized for their puritanical and conservative ideologies, come to accept the concept of religious moderation. The objective of this research is to identify the factors that motivate Salafi groups to embrace religious moderation and to explore its impact on their religious identity and models of citizenship. Employing a qualitative-interpretative approach, this study utilizes data gathered from secondary sources, including books, articles, research reports, and social media The contribution of this study lies in providing a deeper understanding of how conservative religious groups can evolve and embrace more moderate discourse. This is particularly important in the current national context, as it fosters harmony and promotes religious tolerance. The findings indicate that Salafi groups accept religious moderation for various reasons, including social and political pressures, a desire for broader societal acceptance, and an evolving interpretation of their faith. However, this process is often challenging and frequently involves internal conflicts and struggles with identity. Salafi groups affirm their position as citizens by accommodating state policies, including the national religious moderation program. Their adaptation to the secular state system is crucial for their survival and influence within society.

Abstract

This study investigates the historical presence and cultural contributions of the Persian community in Ayutthaya, Thailand, with a particular focus on Sheikh Ahmad Qomi as a central figure of Islamic diplomacy, political integration, and transnational cultural exchange in the early 17th century. Drawing on the framework of cultural hybridity (Bhabha) and intra-Asian cosmopolitanism (Duara; Green), the research explores how Persian elements were localized into Thai cultural, political, and aesthetic forms—from Arabesque architectural motifs to the culinary adaptation of Massaman curry. Far from being a passive cultural visitor, Persia played a proactive role in shaping Thailand’s bureaucratic institutions, religious pluralism, and soft power diplomacy. The findings challenge dominant postcolonial narratives that view Southeast Asia merely through the lens of European colonization, advocating instead for a reorientation toward the agency of Asian actors in shaping regional histories. This paper contributes to the growing body of literature that seeks to decolonize Southeast Asian historiography and reinstate the complexity of Asia-Asia cultural dynamics.

Abstract

The world community is undergoing a fundamental shift or transformation in social and cultural order. A transformation from modernism to post-modernism. This can be seen from the growing trend of pop culture: film, fashion, video, music, communication, technology, and others. Responding to this global transformation, Iran seems to be trying to ward off the pop culture attack. Iran saw that it could threaten the principles of its revolution. Iran’s refusal received a negative response from Iranian society, especially young people. A group that can be said to have been born from the womb of post-modernism. Various criticisms and resistances were also shown to the Iranian revolutionaries who were very firm in upholding the principle of wilayat al-faqih. This research is focused on reading and examining the phenomenon of resistance of the Iranian youth to the government and religious authorities using a qualitative approach. Furthermore, the author also highlights the extent and how the Iranian Revolutionary Guards ward off the global pop culture epidemic, in order to secure the principles of their revolution. This research shows that the trend of pop culture is an alternative for resistance to the authorities of the Revolutionary Guards and strengthens the position of the reformist camp. In addition, the panic of the revolutionary guard to maintain the status quo has trapped them in repressive actions that are contrary to the spirit of the revolution itself.

Abstract

Islamic fundamentalist groups played an important role in Indonesia's 2019 presidential election. They openly sided with the number 2 candidate, Prabowo Subianto-Sandiaga Solahudin Uno. Even today, the presidential election was marked by polarization and religious sentiments that are very strong and sharp. This study examined the model of presidential election contestation that will likely take place in 2024, the position of fundamentalist groups in political contestation, and its relation to religious polarization trends. This qualitative research used a case study approach to explore political models and attitudes in presidential election contestation. Interest group theory was placed to analyze the issue. The results showed that the map of contestation that will occur in 2024 will still be the same as the 2019 presidential election contestation. Second, the division between religious groups will still occur in the 2024 presidential election. Third, the alignment of religious fundamentalist groups in the 2024 presidential election will lead to figures willing and able to accommodate their groups.

Abstract

The early detection of conflict is a crucial process in conflict prevention to avoid more complex situations in society. Politically competitive activities have the potential to trigger social division and broader conflicts. This community service initiative aims to provide concrete solutions for religious-social conflicts resulting from the political process. The initiative is implemented through training and mentoring for members of the Election Supervisory Board (Bawaslu) in Kerinci District and Sungai Penuh City, involving relevant stakeholders such as the National Unity and Politics Agency (Kesbangpol), Regional Police (Polres), and the Forum for Interfaith Harmony (FKUB). Participants in the training displayed high enthusiasm by actively participating in Q&A sessions, group discussions, presentations, and providing reflections. Qualitatively, the training has positively impacted participants’ insights, attitudes, and skills in analyzing and detecting conflicts in society. Participants gained in-depth knowledge of the concept of early conflict detection and methods to identify potential conflicts before reaching higher levels of escalation. In terms of attitude, the training was effective in shaping a positive mindset and sensitivity to conflict issues, reinforcing peace values, and encouraging participants to adopt a proactive approach to conflict prevention efforts. Finally, through case studies and simulations, participants acquired the necessary skills to identify early signs of conflict and develop appropriate handling strategies.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the dynamics of the anti-Shia movement within the context of international and national geopolitics, emphasizing how sectarian issues are exploited as tools for political, ideological, and power mobilization. The research is based on the premise that the anti-Shia movement is not merely a theological conflict but also encompasses geopolitical dimensions that affect international relations and domestic stability in Indonesia. The study employs a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach. Data collection was conducted through literature studies, media analysis, and reviews of relevant documents from both primary and secondary sources. Social movement analysis was applied to understand the mobilization strategies of anti-Shia groups, while a geopolitical approach was used to evaluate the influence of international relations on the emergence of this movement in Indonesia. Furthermore, content analysis of publications in print, digital, and social media was conducted to explore the narratives and communication strategies of anti-Shia groups. The findings reveal that the anti-Shia movement is closely tied to the geopolitical dynamics of the Middle East, particularly the conflict between Sunni and Shia forces supported by state actors such as Saudi Arabia and Iran. In Indonesia, this issue has been adopted by certain groups as a political tool to bolster the dominance of specific ideologies, often leveraging religious sentiments. The study also found that media plays a critical role in amplifying anti-Shia narratives, thereby creating societal polarization. These findings underline that the anti-Shia movement cannot be understood in isolation but must be examined as part of a broader and more complex geopolitical dynamic.

Abstract

This study examines the potential reclassification of forest areas from National Park status to customary land (ulayat) for the Talang Mamak indigenous community in Riau. The issue stems from a longstanding conflict between the government and the Talang Mamak people, who feel that their traditional rights to the forest have been seized by the state through conservation policies. The research is positioned as a critique of the misalignment between state environmental policies and the recognition of indigenous rights, particularly in the management of natural resources. The research method used is a juridical-sociological approach, combining policy analysis through literature review and field interviews to gather perspectives from the indigenous community, as well as legal frameworks related to customary land rights and forest management. The findings show that the state’s centralized, conservation-oriented policies often conflict with sustainable forest management practices that the Talang Mamak people have followed for centuries. This conflict is exacerbated by the weak recognition and legal protection of the community's customary land rights. However, there is significant potential to reclassify the forest into indigenous-managed areas, provided there is strong policy support and active participation from all relevant stakeholders
