Abstract

Apriadi T, Pratama G, Putra RD, Jumsurizal, Jaya YV, Firdaus M, Arpas HD, Suryanti A. 2018. Comparative study on the fish diversity from natural and bauxite post-mining in wetland system of Bintan Island, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 19: 967-973. In this study, the fish populations between two different wetland systems in Bintan Island, Indonesia, i.e., bauxite post-mining (Kijang) and natural wetland (Toapaya) were compared and to propose a newly index namely Environomic of Fishes Index (EFI) to their respective ecosystems. The purposive random sampling at six stations, each of three stations representing bauxite mining (Kijang) and three stations representing a natural wetland (Toapaya) were used in this research. The numbers of fish species and the abundance were enumerated. The new index derived from the value of diversity index (Shannon), similarity index (Evenness), dominance index (Simpson's), conservation status, and economic value were also evaluated. The natural wetland has higher fish diversity than bauxite post-mining. The total species found were twenty-four. The same seven species were found in both areas. Twelve species were obtained from bauxite post-mining, and nineteen species were obtained from natural wetland. Puntius tetrazona and Rasbora heteromorpha were the common species in area study. The diversity and dominance index was at low category, Evenness index was at high category in all stations, except in tidal swamp station at bauxite post-mining. The EFI in natural wetland was higher than bauxite post-mining. The three community index value, economic value, and conservation status of natural wetland were higher than bauxite post-mining.

Abstract

Abstract. Putra RD, Siringiringo RM, Suryanti A, Sari NWP, Sinaga M, Hidayati NV, Hukom FD, Abrar M, Makatipu PC, Sianturi R, Ilham Y. 2021. Impact of marine protected areas on economical important coral reef fish communities: An evaluation of the biological monitoring of coral reef fish in Anambas Islands, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 22: 4169-4181. The use of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) is the core strategy to reduce the impact of the anthropogenic stressor on marine fisheries, especially in reducing the overexploitation of fisheries resources and destructive fishing in which this plays a significant role in the conservation of marine biodiversity and populations. We conducted a study over 4 years to evaluate and assess the impact of MPAs on economically important reef fish in the Anambas Islands. We compared density, size, biomass, and diversity indices from the seven families of coral reef fish (Acanthuridae, Haemulidae, Lethrinidae, Lutjanidae, Scaridae, Siganidae, and Serranidae) using Underwater Visual Census (UVC) with a total of 12 MPAs stations (70-m transect). Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was used to evaluate and assess reserve protection on the coral reef fish, and several ecological indices were used to compare the potential change of economically coral reef fish diversity. We also measured the rate of change in coral cover to identify the effectiveness of the MPAs. After 4 years of studies, our result showed that there was an increase of economical reefs. Fish diversity, density, and biomass increased by 244%, 257%, and 179% respectively. There was no significant difference in the rate of coral cover change among MPAs stations. Economical coral reef fish in Anambas Islands were restored in marine reserve overtimes after fisheries restriction protection, but this does not change the rate of coral cover through time. In addition, the government managed and increased community awareness that significantly influenced decreasing destructive fishing practices and overexploited reef fish species in Anambas Islands but no change in coral cover. The MPAs environmental condition and natural disturbance, including thermal stress and high sedimentation, play a key role in coral cover recovery besides fisheries restriction in the MPAs area.

Abstract

Nugraha AH, Tasabaramo IA, Hernawan UE, Rahmawati S, Putra RD, Darus RF. 2021. Diversity, coverage, distribution and ecosystem services of seagrass in three small islands of northern Papua, Indonesia: Liki Island, Meossu Island and Befondi Island. Biodiversitas 22: 5544-5549. Papua waters are one of the hot spot areas with high marine biodiversity in the world. Yet, the less accessible location and varying geographical conditions become the significant constraints of biodiversity study in this region, resulting in limited information about the diversity of marine resources, including the seagrass ecosystem. This research aims to investigate the diversity, coverage and distribution of seagrass in three small islands in the northern waters of Papua, namely Liki Island, Befondi Island, and Meossu Island, as well as to study the ecosystem services provided by the seagrass. This research is part of the Nusa Manggala Expedition, which was carried out in November 2018, consisted of seven observation stations. Data collection was conducted using the transect line method combined with plot quadrat. Information regarding seagrass ecosystem services was gathered through observation and direct interviews to the community. The results showed that there were seven species of seagrass in the studied sites, namely Cymodocea rotundata, Enhalus acoroides, Halodule uninervis, Halodule pinifolia, Halophila ovalis, Thalassia hemprichii, and Syringodium isoetifolium. Liki Island had the highest seagrass cover value of 82.24%, followed by Meossu Island and Befondi Island with seagrass cover of 63.23% and 31.25%, respectively. There were 13 seagrass ecosystem services identified in this research. The people of Liki Island and Meossu Island get the benefits of the existence of the seagrass ecosystem. The direct benefits are the presence of seagrass is associated with biota commonly used as food sources such as Siganus sp and sea cucumbers. There are efforts made by the community to maintain the sustainability of the seagrass ecosystem, which is known as sasi.

Abstract

Abstract. Putra RD, Siringoringo RM, Abrar M, Puranamasari NW, Bengen DG, Zamani NP, Subhan B, Aji LP, Giyanto, Almanar IP, Dollu EA. 2025. Reef fish resilience following a significant earthquake disaster in the Nias Islands, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 26: 1836-1845. The geological upheaval of the Nias Islands, Indonesia, due to a major earthquake in 2005, resulted in lithospheric shifts, causing a sea floor uplift of approximately 1-2 meters. This uplift led to localized coral mortality, posing a threat to certain reefs and consequently impacting the composition of coral reef fishes. This study aims to explore the enduring changes in coral reef fish composition before and after the earthquake. Underwater Visual Census (UVC) transect surveys were conducted using standard SCUBA diving equipment to quantify fish abundance and biomass in benthic substrate transect locations. The reef fish assemblages categorized into corallivores (Chaetodontidae), herbivores (Acanthuridae, Scaridae, and Siganidae), and carnivores (Haemulidae, Lethrinidae, Lutjanidae, and Serranidae), were studied from eight fish families, with species identification conducted at the individual level. Analysis of corallivorous fish abundance during the pre-earthquake period (2004), earthquake event (2005), and post-earthquake recovery (2007-2010) revealed no significant differences (Kruskal-Wallis, p: 0.58). Corallivore abundance was lower in the pre-earthquake conditions, increased during the earthquake (Pairwise Wilcoxon test, p-value: 0.74), decreased in 2007 (Pairwise Wilcoxon test, p-value: 0.071) after the disturbance, but rebounded in 2008 (Pairwise Wilcoxon test, p-value: 0.23). Post the seismic event in 2005, ecological indices reflecting Shannon diversity (H’) and Uniformity Index Evenness (J) among reef fish, especially the corallivore group, consistently displayed a noticeable decline. However, recovery progress levels were exclusively regained by 2010.

Abstract

Abstract. Siringoringo RM, Bengen DG, Nurjaya IW, Subhan B, Giyanto, Putra RD, Abrar M, Sari NWP, Aji LP. 2025. Spatial variation in coral reef condition and reef fish assemblages along a proximity to Jakarta Bay, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 26: 5919-5930. The coral reef ecosystems of the Seribu Islands, Indonesia, exhibit complex ecological interactions between benthic assemblages and reef fish communities under the combined influence of local anthropogenic pressures and regional environmental stressors. This study examined benthic composition and reef fish functional structure across 14 sites along a spatial gradient from Jakarta Bay, Seribu Islands, to the outer islands. Benthic cover was assessed using the Underwater Photo Transect (UPT) method, and reef fish assemblages were quantified through Underwater Visual Census (UVC). Analyses revealed that distance from Jakarta Bay had a weak and inconsistent influence on benthic composition, with a low explanatory power for variations in hard coral cover (R²: 0.023, p: 0.6). In contrast, corallivorous fish abundance increased significantly with distance from the bay (R²: 0.30, p: 0.043), indicating a more pronounced spatial response among higher trophic groups. Cluster analyses identified three distinct ecological assemblages aligned with the nearshore-offshore gradient, reflecting subtle yet detectable shifts in community structure. These findings suggest that while benthic recovery remains constrained by persistent sedimentation and nutrient enrichment, reef fish assemblages particularly corallivores retain spatial sensitivity to urban influence. The emerging ecological differentiation across the archipelago underscores that the Seribu Islands function as a transitional system shaped by both urban proximity and broader ecological processes. Effective management should therefore integrate local mitigation of land-based stressors with broader seascape-scale strategies to enhance reef resilience in urban-influenced marine ecosystems.
