Abstract

The development of social media has created a new space for the dissemination of philosophical discourse. This study aims to examine how the narrative of Javanese philosophy is constructed in the YouTube content of Frans Magnis Suseno. The method used is semiotic analysis based on Roland Barthes' approach, which distinguishes between denotative, connotative, and mythic meanings in both visual and verbal texts. The analysis reveals that Frans Magnis conveys core values of Javanese philosophy such as eling, nrimo, and sumeleh through simple, communicative narratives adapted to today's social context. These narratives not only popularize Javanese philosophy but also make it more accessible to younger generations through a modern visual format. This study highlights the significant potential of new media in transforming traditional discourses into a more inclusive digital domain.

Abstract

In Muslim religious life, the concept of sustenance is often understood in material terms; however, the experiential dimensions—how congregants recognize, evaluate, and internalize rezeki through acts of worship—have received relatively little attention in “Living Qur’an” studies. This research aims to analyze congregational prayer (ṣalat) as a religious experience, the meaning of sustenance as internalized by congregants, the relationship between worship, human effort (ikhtiyār), and reliance on God (tawakal), as well as the embodiment of Qur’anic values within the religious experiences of the congregation at Masjid Musyawarah Medan Amplas. The study employs a qualitative method using the “Living Qur’an” approach. Primary data were gathered through observation, interviews with congregants, and documentation, then analyzed using thematic analysis to identify patterns of experience, meaning-making, reception, and religious orientation emerging from the field data. The results indicate that congregational prayer is understood as a religious experience that fosters tranquility, orderliness, spiritual closeness, and a sense of community through ritual repetition and collective engagement. Sustenance is perceived in diverse ways, encompassing not only income and material wealth but also health, family, peace of mind, ease in affairs, opportunities for doing good, and a sense of contentment. Congregational prayer serves as a context for reinforcing spiritual orientation in the pursuit of a livelihood; meanwhile, ikhtiar is understood as a human responsibility, and tawakal as a means of coping with uncertain outcomes. The embodiment of Qur’anic values occurs primarily through reflective reception of experiences rather than merely through the recitation of verses. These findings underscore the nature of the “Living Qur’an,” wherein Qur’anic values come to life through ritual practice and the ways congregants interpret their experiences of sustenance, without presupposing a direct causal link between worship and material success.
