Abstract

This study examines the translation techniques in Indonesian subtitles of Interstellar (2014), applying Vinay and Darbelnet's framework. Through a qualitative descriptive analysis of 1,903 English-Indonesian subtitle pairs from Google TV, the research identifies the distribution patterns of seven translation procedures: borrowing, calque, literal translation, transposition, modulation, equivalence, and adaptation. Results indicate literal translation dominates with 636 instances (33.42%), followed by modulation (489 cases, 25.70%) and transposition (362 cases, 19.02%). Borrowing accounts for 247 cases (12.98%), while equivalence, adaptation, and calque represent 3.57%, 2.84%, and 2.47%, respectively. The nearly balanced use of direct techniques (48.87%) and oblique techniques (51.13%) demonstrates strategic approaches in professional translation. The predominance of literal translation suggests structural compatibility between English and Indonesian, while significant modulation and transposition usage reveal necessary adaptations for cultural and linguistic differences. Technical terminology often favors borrowing, and cultural references require adaptation. This research provides empirical evidence for professional audiovisual translation practices.

Abstract

This study examines the persuasive strategies used by Anies Baswedan in his TEDx speech titled “Governments, Make Public Transport Equitable.” As the Governor of Jakarta, Baswedan delivered the speech on a global platform to advocate for equitable, inclusive, and sustainable public transportation. The research focuses on how he employs Aristotle’s classical rhetorical appeals, namely ethos to establish credibility, pathos to create emotional connection, and logos to present logical reasoning, in order to engage and persuade his audience. Using qualitative rhetorical analysis, the study explores how these appeals are combined and positioned throughout the speech. The official transcript was carefully analyzed to identify statements that reflect each persuasive strategy. The findings show that logos is the most dominant appeal, as Baswedan presents data, measurable goals, and clear policy outcomes. Ethos is conveyed through his position, achievements, and inclusive vision, while pathos emerges in moments where he highlights social justice, the urgency of addressing climate change, and the unifying power of public transport. This research shows that rhetorical appeals in political speeches like Baswedan’s are not applied in a strict sequence but are interwoven to strengthen the overall persuasive impact. The study offers insight into how classical rhetorical strategies are applied in modern communication platforms such as TEDx.

Abstract

This study investigates the meanings associated with the song “Scaredy Cat” by Ian DPR, focusing on connotative and denotative aspects through a semantic perspective. Using qualitative research methods, this work builds on existing research related to figurative language. The findings highlight the complex interaction between the song's literal meaning and its deeper emotional implications, which collectively enhance its impact. Denotative aspects provide a clear understanding of the songwriter's experience, while connotative elements invite deeper engagement with themes of fear, anxiety, and vulnerability. This research reveals that figurative language, such as metaphors and imagery, contributes to the layered interpretation of songs. This complexity not only strengthens the emotional bond between the artist and the audience but also encourages listeners to reflect on their own feelings and experiences. The importance of language in music as a means of expressing human emotions is emphasized. By combining empathetic language and figurative language, songwriters can create a sense of release and emotional connection. The results align with previous research on the importance of figurative language in enhancing lyrical meaning and emotional resonance. Further research is recommended to explore the relationship between semantics and emotional expression across various music genres.

Abstract

SEFEO is an abbreviation of one of the most influential English communities in Indonesia, Share English for Everything Community which was established in 2012 by Zelky Yusuf as the founder and runs until now. SEFEO has a different system for running routine English activities including the figures commonly called SEFEO stars consisting of international students and students who have extraordinary appeal in terms of appearance, popularity in their daily lives, and English language skills. This study, in addition to intending to explain theoretically the existence of elements of politeness theory in conversations in one of the SEFEO English community podcasts. The researcher tries to find the possibility of social factors occurring in the SEFEO English community. Politeness strategies consist of a few principles including off-record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and bald on record According to Brown and Levinson (1978). The researcher chose a qualitative content analysis research method. The researcher took a sample of a podcast entitled "Passion" which was narrated by Robin and Jack and a sample of a podcast entitled “Our Experiences in Learning English” which was narrated by Zelky Yusuf (the owner) and Zulfani. The researcher managed to find a relationship between politeness strategies and a person's social status in the community, including in the podcast entitled "Passion" hosted by Robin and Jack. It turns out that the interaction between the two did not show a significant gap because their status was equally respected in society Meanwhile, the interaction between the president directly and the members who are considered ordinary in the podcast entitled "Our Experiences in Learning English" shows a politeness phenomenon where because of the indication of closeness between the two, the result is that their interaction process is very casual and does not significantly show the gap between the two because one has a higher position in the community environment.

Abstract

This research explores the narrative of racism and violence in Angie Thomas’s novel The Hate U Give. Using a qualitative expressive approach, this study analyzes how the author portrays these issues through the novel’s characters, events, and narrative structure. The findings reveal that the narrative of racism and violence is not only depicted through the direct actions of police brutality and social injustice but also through the internal conflicts experienced by the protagonist, Starr Carter. The study shows that the author uses a first-person narrative to convey the complexity of identity, racial discrimination, and resistance against systemic oppression. The narrative not only exposes the physical violence faced by the black community but also highlights the structural violence that reinforces racial inequality. This research contributes to the understanding of how literature can function as a medium to critique social issues and raise awareness about racial discrimination and violence.

Abstract

The current study examines language use in the short story “The Doll’s House” by Katherine Mansfield from a stylistic analysis point of view and concentrates on the use of linguistic features with the purpose of creating narrative meaning and interpretational characteristics. The study aims to analyze specific words, phrases, clauses, and sentences that have certain stylistic preferences within the narrative. The research methodology applied in this study is that of qualitative description. This study has revealed that Mansfield was employing a very complicated vocabulary in order to create imagery effects and describe social stratification very delicately, and variations in the sentence structure, for instance short, exclamatory, and repetitive ones, covey the emotional attitudes of the child characters. Moreover, the present study finds that figurative language, especially the technique of personification, plays a symbolic role in the depiction of values like empathy and conscience. The study concludes that language in “The Doll’s House” is used not only in an aesthetic manner but is also employed to convey social meanings in the form of narration. Therefore, stylistic analysis “Methodology” is a valuable instrument for analyzing the connections between linguistic form and meaning in literary narrative texts like short stories.

Abstract

This study explores how Eric Carle’s children’s storybook The Very Hungry Caterpillar creates depth in its narrative through visual components and tactile elements despite its limited text. Using a multimodal analysis approach, this study highlights the texture of the collage, the use of symbolic colors, and the die-cut holes as elements that can be felt. The results of this study show that the physical design of this book is not merely decorative, but functions as a key narrative guide that helps children understand the concepts of growth and change independently. The die-cut holes have a specific role as a physical symbol of hunger, allowing young readers to interact directly with the story. The combination of the book’s materials and visual storytelling has proven to transcend language barriers, making it an effective literacy tool for beginner readers. This research confirms that visual storytelling intertwined with the physical form of a book can convey complex philosophical themes more effectively than narratives composed solely of dense text. The success of this book confirms that tactile and visual elements are important literary tools in the world of children’s literature.
