Abstract

There have been pros and cons to learning grammar concerning Second Language Acquisition. This paper aims to investigate Hospitality and Tourism (HT) students’ and workers’ perceptions of the significance of English grammar which has not been widely discussed. This article reports a mixed-method study that was conducted using an online survey and involving 50 HT students and 50 HT workers across Indonesia. Interviews with 2 Human Resource Managers of international hotel chains were also performed to provide stronger validation. The findings revealed that HT students and workers do not hold a positive perception of learning grammar and should not comprehensively learn English rules since grammar mastery will insignificantly impact employability and career performance for most positions in that sector. However, it is suggested that those in higher positions learn the 6 most commonly used tenses to avoid misunderstandings that, to some degree, link to job promotions. Results also suggest that teachers of ESP for Hospitality prioritize students’ speaking fluency, listening, and vocabulary comprehension using the CLT and PBL teaching approaches. The research results are expected to build a more positive attitude toward English learning, thus fostering a better quality of human resources in the hospitality industry.

Abstract

Technological developments and globalization require foreign language skills. This phenomenon causes the high urgency of linguistic competence. This existence has also sporadically triggered the emergence of various foreign language courses in Indonesia. However, this phenomenon seems to be shifting along with the outbreak of the Covid-19 virus. The pandemic era forced foreign language institutions to survive financially to cover operational costs as a result of significant changes before and after the pandemic. However, financial problems are not the only problems foreign language course institutions face—changes from conventional learning models oriented from face-to-face learning to online-based learning. Creating a language course institution changes the various dimensions in it. Research on various problems of foreign language courses in the pandemic era was conducted qualitatively through interviews and Focus Group Discussions (FGD) involving entrepreneurs of intensive foreign language courses in the Tangerang area and its surroundings. Through FGD, it was found that it was necessary to make massive and simultaneous adjustments by course institutions in this pandemic era. The adjustments referred to include changes in teaching methods and techniques and adjustments in terms of promotion. The findings in the FGD will be further developed through an enrichment program involving various parties, including students, teachers, and business owners, for intensive foreign language courses. Community Service Activities (PKM) are expected to have implications for competitiveness data and the ability of foreign language course institutions to survive during the pandemic but still maintain quality.

Abstract

Vocational learning in Indonesia at the upper secondary level provides a large portion of improving English language skills. Besides being used as a compulsory subject/college in schools and universities, English lessons are studied in the context of vocational education to bridge the world of education with the needs of industry and the workforce on a national, multinational, and international scale. The high need for a competent workforce, which can be seen from the ability to speak English, presents a variety of specific subjects in line with this condition. The subject variant in question is business English or 'business English'. Referring to this condition and examining the need for vocational education, Community Service activities (ABDIMAS) are carried out with the theme 'Introduction to Business English'. ABDIMAS is held at the Almakiyah Vocational High School (SMK) in East Jakarta. ABDIMAS was carried out in response to the needs of partners who felt that the English learning materials did not meet the needs of students and graduates who were required to be absorbed in the world of work. ABDIMAS is carried out through three sessions of a hybrid online and offline enrichment program for students. Each session is taught about what aspects are included in business English and linguistic aspects commonly used in business and work contexts. This activity is oriented towards increasing the knowledge and insight of the participants regarding (i) business conversations, (ii) formal and informal expressions in business communication, (iii) basics of email writing. The activity ends with an evaluation that broadly shows that the activities are carried out in line with the work context so that they do not focus on the theoretical and implementation levels.

Abstract

Translanguaging is interpreted as one of the pedagogical strategies for learning foreign languages in a multilingual context where there is the use of several languages for receptive and productive purposes. The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of teachers of Mandarin as a Second Language regarding translanguaging (cross-language) approaches in classroom learning. This research method is qualitative research with a foreign language applied linguistic approach. The research data comes from the Focused Discussion Group as the main data source and the Google Form questionnaire as a supporting data source. The FGD was conducted with 12 lecturers at a private university that has a Chinese Language study program. The data obtained were analyzed descriptively according to the results of the FGD. The results of the FGD stated that most of the teachers gave a positive response to translanguaging and that there was the implementation of translanguaging in the classroom by the teachers in a flexible way with a variety of language choices. Translanguaging often occurs when dealing with students with low linguistic abilities where the lecturer uses a language other than the target language when explaining vocabulary, terms and proverbs as well as when giving examples, this reflects the main purpose of implementing translanguaging for most informants is to increase and deepen understanding students on the material. Through this research process, it can be concluded that in the Mandarin pedagogical context, teachers tend to provide tolerance and flexibility for the existence of translanguaging.

Abstract

Folklore is a story created by the community whose existence is intended to entertain children through stories containing moral values to have an essential role for children. It usually based on the culture of those who created them, making folklores from different areas unique in their ways, including the morals they teach. This article is qualitatively aimed to analyse and compare folklores from both Indonesia and Britain, finding similarities and differences in the moral values they teach. This research is directed to compare folklore originating from Indonesia and England because they both have different cultural backgrounds and analyse how each culture can differentiate between two similar stories. The new criticism theory is applied during the comparison process, divided into first analysing the story, ending with the morals that the story attempts to teach. The result of this study shows that, despite the difference in culture between the two cultures, their folklores can teach the same morals, as shown by “Saudagar yang Kikir” dan “The Old Witch”. On the other hand, ‘Legenda Batu Menangis’ and ‘Cap O’ Rushes’ contain different moral values and are more difficult to compare, despite both having familial themes.. Abstract

Public speaking is a critical communicative competency in the contemporary era, functioning not only as a component of personal development but also as a strategic element in marketing practices. The ability to deliver messages, ideas, or promotional content in a persuasive and structured manner plays a significant role in shaping audience perception and supporting business success. In response to this need, Pembangunan Jaya University is implementing a community service program in the form of public speaking skills training for Tegalwaru Vocational High School (SMKN) students. This initiative aimed to enhance students communication capacities in alignment with current industrial and professional demands. The training addressed both technical and practical dimensions of public communication, including effective speaking techniques, confidence building, appropriate use of body language, vocal intonation control, and strategies for designing and delivering engaging presentations. Additionally, participants were equipped with skills to respond to audience questions in a professional and composed manner. This activity is expected to foster practical competencies that will improve students readiness to face the challenges of the workforce and compete within increasingly dynamic and competitive labor markets. Moreover, the program reflects the tangible contribution of higher education institutions to human resource development through community-based empowerment initiatives, particularly those grounded in 21st-century skill development.
