Abstract

This study aimed to find out types of swear words that are used in the moonlight movie and to analyze purposes of the characters. The subject of this research is the characters in Moonlight movie. This research used descriptive qualitative design.  This study used Wardhaugh (2006) theory and Andersson and Trudgill (1992) . This research employed two instruments namely the researcher himself and checklist. The result shows that, excretion swear words appeared 38 %, Sex swear words appeared 27 %, religious matter swear word appeared 20 %, mother in law swear words appeared 4 %, animal swear words appeared 7 %, death, and bodily function swear words respectively appeared 2 %. Looking at the purposes of the characters in using swear word the most dominant is used by the characters is auxiliary which appeared 49 % , abusive appeared 47 % , and expletive which appeared 4 %.

Abstract

Literature has been effectively used to transfer values to children even school existed (Edgington, 2002), yet the task for selecting good literature is not simple. Therefore, this study aims to analyse a children literature entitled Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson, in order to reveal the values of character education proposed by Kemendikbud (2016) on Jesse Aarons’ characterization. This study applies the interactive model of qualitative data analysis by Miles et al. (2014). Through Jesse Aarons’ characterization, it is found out that he possessed 29 characters and 25 of them belong to the values proposed by Kemendikbud (2016). Those values are religious, peace-loving, tolerant, wise, nature-loving, nationalist, self-sacrificing, achiever, patriotic, disciplined, independent, hardworking, tough, creative, courageous, mutual-cooperative, democratic, nonviolent, solidarity, voluntary, integrity, honest, loyal, fair, and responsible.

Abstract

In The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks, Allison Nelson was characterized as an inspiring woman who fought for her dreams. Meanwhile, Noah Calhoun was described as a loving man that respected Allison as a woman. This novel contained traits of rich liberal feminism. The purpose of the present research was to find out the traits of Noah Calhoun and Allison Nelson as the main characters that represented liberal feminism in the novel. The method of this research was textual analysis to analyze the traits. Data collection was linguistics unit corpora recorded in written forms. The finding of this research can be stated that Noah Calhoun and Allison Nelson were categorized as liberal feminists. Their traits were a combination of positive feminine and masculine traits. The traits of the main characters as liberal feminists were appreciative, forceful, strong, devoted, firm, sensitive, confident, patient, carefree, responsible, and independent.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyzethe types and functions of code switching used by the actors and actress in Indonesian movie entitled “Bridezilla”. This study used descriptive qualitative method. In collecting the data, this study used document analysis method with checklist analysis form and taking a note as the instruments used. There 5 were steps done in order tocollect the data, such as watching movie, giving mark in the checklist analysis form, taking a note, giving explanation and conclusion based on the results of analysis. It was found that in “Bridezilia” movie consisted ofcode switching in 35 dialogs, there were three types of code switching, such as Tag-Switching13 dialogs, Inter-Sentential 10 dialogs and Intra-Sentential Switching in 12 dialogs. Meanwhile, there were 2 functions of code switching existed in the movie. It can be concluded that the existence of code switching in Indonesian movie indicating that the other language has big impact toward the first language.

Abstract

There is low teacher interest in implementing technology-based differentiated learning. A lack of understanding and skills in utilizing technology to support differentiated learning is a major obstacle to optimizing the teaching and learning process. This research aims to observe the implementation of technology based differentiated learning in english language learning and to find out teachers' interest in using technology based differentiated learning in english language learning. This research uses exploratory sequential mix method. Qualitative data was obtained by using an observation sheet to observe the application of technology based differentiated learning in english learning and quantitative data was obtained by using google form to find out teachers' interest when technology based differentiated learning was applied in english learning. There are three aspects used in the observation sheet, namely content, process, product. The questionnaire used consisted of 23 items that were adjusted to the research. The subjects of this study were three eleventh grade english teachers. This study found that technology based differentiated learning is implemented in english learning and revealed that teachers have a high interest in english learning that implements technology based differentiated learning. This study emphasizes the importance of teachers in implementing technology based differentiated teaching in english language learning.
