Abstract

Adopting a child with autism presents unique psychological, emotional, and social challenges that differ significantly from those experienced by biological parents. In Indonesia, adoption involving children with autism remains relatively uncommon, and empirical studies examining the lived experiences of adoptive parents are still limited. Most existing research has focused on parental stress, coping strategies, and caregiving burdens, with little attention given to how adoptive parents construct and experience meaning in life through their parenting roles. This study aimed to explore the meaning of life among adoptive parents of children with autism by examining their subjective experiences and meaning-making processes. This research employed a qualitative case-study design. Participants consisted of a married couple who adopted a child diagnosed with autism through kinship-based adoption. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, non-participant observations, and triangulation with a significant other. The data were analyzed thematically to identify patterns related to meaning construction, emotional experiences, and parental roles. The findings indicate that adoptive parents construct meaning in life through acceptance, commitment, emotional resilience, and spiritual reflection in responding to parenting challenges. Parenting a child with autism becomes a source of personal growth and life purpose, despite ongoing emotional and practical demands. This study contributes to meaning-in-life literature by highlighting the distinctive experiences of adoptive parents and offers practical implications for psychological support and family-based interventions.

Abstract

Abstract Traumatic experiences such as sexual abuse can have complex, long-term impacts on victims, especially if not managed adaptively. For some individuals, these experiences can contribute to the development of serious psychological disorders later in life. The aim of this study is to understand the psychological dynamics of adult individuals who have experienced sexual abuse with paranoid schizophrenia disorders from a psychoanalytic perspective. The research used a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and a review of medical records. Data analysis was conducted descriptively and interpretively, drawing on psychoanalytic concepts. This research shows that permissive parenting experiences during childhood can influence the dominance of id structures and weaken ego function. Psychotic symptoms that emerge later in life are a manifestation of the repression of unresolved sexual abuse trauma. The psychological dynamics of the subject indicate that past trauma and unconscious conflicts play a role in the development of severe psychological disorders, so that psychoanalytic concepts are relevant for understanding and formulating more comprehensive interventions.

Abstract

Intimacy is a fundamental capacity essential for individuals in developing meaningful interpersonal relationships and contributing to psychological well-being and quality of life. Barriers in intimacy development, including fear of intimacy and relational dysfunction, can result in significant psychological consequences such as anxiety and depression, as well as destabilization of intimate relationships with long-term impacts. This study aims to analyze the construct of intimacy, its developmental mechanisms, and its implications for romantic relationship quality and marital stability. Demographic data shows that Indonesia has experienced a substantial increase in divorce rates, reaching 516,544 cases in 2022, indicating significant problems in intimate relationships within society. Through comprehensive analysis of prominent theories such as attachment theory, fear of intimacy theory, and intimacy violation theory, this study identifies protective factors and risk factors that facilitate and hinder intimacy development. Findings indicate that deficits in intimacy capacity correlate with increased risk of divorce, mental health disorders, and relational dysfunction that reduces life satisfaction. The practical implications of this study emphasize the urgency of evidence-based psychological interventions to optimize intimacy development, enhance intimate relationship quality, and promote family stability.
