Abstract

Reading motivation among Generation Z students in rural Indonesian EFL (English as a Foreign Language) classrooms remains critically low due to digital distractions, outdated materials, and limited home support. While prior studies highlight the benefits of digital engagement and gamification, little is known about how these strategies function in under-resourced, rural settings. This study employed a mixed-methods design using a convergent parallel approach. Quantitative data were collected from 150 senior high school students across SMA, SMK, and MA institutions in Kabupaten Indragiri Hulu, using a questionnaire adapted from the Motivation for Reading Questionnaire (MRQ). Qualitative data were obtained through interviews and focus group discussions with 10 teachers and 10 students. Thematic analysis and descriptive statistics were integrated to identify motivational barriers and context-appropriate strategies. Findings revealed that digital distractions, vocabulary difficulties, lack of family encouragement, and exam-oriented instruction were key factors undermining reading motivation. Only 27% of students reported experiencing interactive or digital reading activities in class. Students expressed preference for digital content but struggled with comprehension due to limited vocabulary and irrelevant materials. Grounded in Self-Determination Theory and Expectancy-Value Theory, the study suggests that increasing students’ autonomy, competence, and task value—through gamified learning, contextualized materials, and family engagement—can significantly boost motivation. These insights offer actionable strategies for teachers and policymakers to revitalize reading culture in rural EFL settings.

Abstract

This study investigated the correlation between English speaking anxiety and students’ speaking performance among tenth-grade students at MA Nurul Falah Air Molek. The research aimed to determine the level of students’ English speaking anxiety, describe their speaking performance, and examine the significance, strength, and direction of the relationship between the two variables. A quantitative approach with a correlational research design was employed. The participants consisted of 60 tenth-grade students. Data on English speaking anxiety were collected through a questionnaire adapted from the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale, while speaking performance scores were obtained from the English teacher’s assessment records. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro–Wilk normality test, a linearity test, and Pearson Product-Moment correlation with SPSS. The results showed that students’ English speaking anxiety was in the moderate category, with a mean score of 89.07 and a standard deviation of 9.690. A total of 63.33% of the students experienced moderate anxiety. Students’ speaking performance was also predominantly moderate, with a mean score of 75.35 and a standard deviation of 10.338; 65.00% of the students were classified in this category. The correlation analysis produced a coefficient of 0.614 with a significance value of p 0.001, indicating a strong, positive, and statistically significant correlation between English speaking anxiety and speaking performance. The coefficient of determination showed that the variables shared 37.70% of their variance. It was concluded that English speaking anxiety was significantly associated with students’ speaking performance, although the correlational design did not establish a causal relationship. Keywords: anxiety, speaking, performance

Abstract

A descriptive qualitative method was used to analyze grammatical errors in the use of the simple past tense in narrative writing by 25 students of class XI.1 at Madrasah Aliyah Nurul Falah Airmolek. The students were assigned to write a narrative text about “An Unforgettable Holiday,” and their works were examined using the Surface Strategy Taxonomy by Dulay, Burt, and Krashen, covering omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. The analysis identified 157 total errors, with misformation (67.52%) as the most dominant, followed by omission (22.93%), misordering (6.37%), and addition (3.18%). These results indicate that students have difficulty with verb formation, auxiliary usage, and sentence structure. The causes of these errors include first language interference, overgeneralization of rules, limited exposure to correct written input, and insufficient feedback during learning activities. These findings demonstrate the crucial role of explicit grammar teaching, along with structured writing tasks that allow students to apply their understanding in meaningful contexts. Incorporating peer editing and teacher-led error correction is also essential in minimizing recurring mistakes. In addition, the importance of reinforcing regular and irregular verb patterns through focused instruction should be emphasized in classroom practice. These strategies are expected to help students internalize the appropriate use of past tense in written English. This study contributes to the field of language education by highlighting the persistent grammatical issues faced by learners and offering pedagogical recommendations for improvement. Future research may expand the scope by comparing grammatical errors across different text genres or proficiency levels

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the difficulties faced by eighth-grade students of SMPN 3 Sungai Lala in learning English vocabulary. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach to obtain a deeper understanding of students’ vocabulary learning problems in the classroom. The findings revealed that students experienced various interconnected difficulties, particularly in pronunciation, spelling, grammar, word form, and word usage. Among these aspects, word usage was identified as the most difficult area, followed by word form and pronunciation. The study also found that students’ vocabulary difficulties were influenced by limited exposure to English, lack of confidence, and insufficient contextual practice in using vocabulary. These findings indicate that vocabulary learning is a multidimensional process that requires more than simple memorization. Therefore, it is recommended that English teachers implement interactive and communicative teaching strategies that emphasize contextual learning, meaningful language exposure, and active vocabulary practice in order to improve students’ vocabulary mastery and classroom participation.

Abstract

Writing is an important skill in English learning because it enables students to express ideas and information in written form. However, many students still face difficulties in writing due to limited vocabulary, grammar problems, and the use of conventional teaching methods that make students less active in the learning process. Therefore, an effective and student-centered learning model is needed to improve students’ writing ability. This study aimed to determine the effect of the Project-Based Learning (PBL) model on the tenth-grade students’ writing ability at SMAN 2 Rengat Barat. This study used a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design. The sample consisted of 69 students divided into an experimental class and a control class. The experimental class was taught using the Project-Based Learning model, while the control class was taught using the conventional teaching method. The data were collected through pre-test and post-test writing tests and analyzed using SPSS version 27. The findings showed that the experimental class obtained a higher post-test mean score (78.8214) than the control class (58.6765). In addition, the Independent Samples T-Test showed that the Sig. (2-tailed) value was 0.000, which was lower than 0.05. This indicates that the Project-Based Learning model had a significant effect on students’ writing ability. Therefore, Project-Based Learning can be used as an effective teaching strategy to improve students’ writing performance and classroom participation.
