Abstract

The flipped classroom has emerged as a prominent pedagogical innovation, yet its application within physical education-a domain defined by embodied, psychomotor learning-remains comparatively underexamined and empirically fragmented. This systematic literature review synthesises evidence on how the flipped classroom has been implemented in physical education and what effects it produces on student outcomes. The review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA 2020) framework, drawing records from the Scopus database through a structured Boolean search of title, abstract, and keyword fields. The initial search returned 161 records; after removing 14 duplicates, screening 147 titles and abstracts, and assessing 60 full texts against predefined eligibility criteria, 23 studies were included. Study quality was appraised with the FICO framework (Focus, Information, Context, Outcome), retaining only studies that satisfied all four dimensions; because the included studies were highly heterogeneous in design and outcome measurement, their findings were combined through thematic synthesis rather than meta-analytic pooling. Thematic synthesis identified five recurrent outcome domains: motor-skill learning, motivation, physical activity and engagement, cognitive knowledge, and student satisfaction. Across designs, flipped approaches generally improved psychomotor performance, autonomous motivation, in-class activity time, and conceptual understanding, although effects on physical fitness were inconsistent. The review advances theoretical understanding of pre-class digital preparation in movement contexts and offers practical guidance for teachers, while underscoring the need for larger, longer, and methodologically rigorous trials across diverse educational settings.

Abstract

Inclusive physical education (IPE) is considered by many to be the best way to allow people with disabilities, equal opportunities for engaging in physical activities but its actual implementation varies greatly within educational systems. This systematic review was conducted to uncover the barriers and facilitators to IPE implementation and to see how various stakeholders influence the process. The study was carried out in line with the PRISMA (2020) guidelines. Through a structured search of the Scopus database, 357 articles were found; after excluding 14 duplicates and through successive screening, 18 studies published between 2021 and 2025 were selected according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Barriers and facilitators were synthesised using a socio-ecological framework distinguishing individual, relational, and structural determinants. The corpus (n = 18) was predominantly qualitative and spanned twelve countries, integrating the perspectives of teachers, pre-service teachers, and students with disabilities. Across the included studies, inadequate teacher preparation was the most consistently reported barrier, while practicum-based teacher education emerged as the most strongly evidenced facilitator. Notably, multiple studies converged on the finding that physical placement in mainstream classes did not, by itself, secure social belonging. Thematic analysis unfolded that lack of sufficient initial and continuous teacher training, poor structural settings, and inflexible pedagogical conventions are still major obstacles, whereas focused teacher education, reflective and individualized teaching methods, and nurturing school environment act as facilitators. Results show that physical inclusion alone is not sufficient to bring about social inclusion. This review offers an integrated, stakeholder-aware narrative on IPE implementation, provides useful advice for teacher training, and lays down a research agenda emphasizing student voice and longitudinal designs.

However, the information on what determines this readiness is scattered across different disciplines and countries. This systematic review combined peer-reviewed research on the abilities and readiness of physical education (PE) teachers and pre-service teachers for inclusive teaching. The review was based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA 2020) guidelines and utilized the Scopus database to retrieve records through a structured Boolean search targeting teacher competence, self-efficacy, preparedness, and inclusive or adapted physical education. Out of 487 records found, 31 empirical studies that were published within the period 2020-2025 met the eligibility criteria after removing duplicates, screening titles and abstracts, and assessing full texts. Records were retrieved from Scopus (search executed December 2025); eligibility followed predefined PICOS criteria, methodological adequacy was appraised with the FICO framework, and findings were combined through thematic synthesis. Screening was conducted with a documented reviewer-agreement procedure.  A thematic synthesis grouped the results based on four RQs that covered main competencies, obstacles, and enablers, the impact of teacher education and PD, and pedagogical-technological innovations. Two points were most prominent: self-efficacy through focused training is always changeable, and insufficient, fragmented preparation remains a structural barrier in different systems. The review deepens a situational understanding of inclusive-PE preparedness and gives practical recommendations for teacher-education programs and ongoing PD. Future studies are expected to use longitudinal methodologies, standardized competence instruments and also focus on under-represented regions to strengthen the evidence base.
