Abstract

Hypertension is often referred to as "the silent killer" because it often goes without complaints, so sufferers do not know that they have hypertension but then find that they already have a disease or complications from hypertension. Hypertension treatment or prevention can be done traditionally using Family Medicinal Plants (TOGA). TOGA is increasingly preferred because of its low side effects and is more suitable for various metabolic and degenerative diseases. An area with a high incidence of hypertension is the Dadok Tunggul Hitam Padang Community Health Center. The high incidence of hypertension in this area is because people do not comply with the diet of hypertensive patients and do not know the correct treatment methods. Thus, it is essential to educate people in the area about the treatment of hypertension using family medicinal plants. The activity was carried out on 28 July 2023 by conducting a pretest first to determine the community's understanding before providing intervention, then continuing with providing education and handing over Family Medicinal Plant (TOGA) seeds to hypertension patients and at the end of the session a posttest was carried out again. The results were that public knowledge before education was 65% and after education was 100%. There was increasing in knowledge scores because people were enthusiastic about participating in education. The suggestion for the community health center is to monitor the results of this education.

Abstract

Inmates serving sentences face a variety of psychosocial problems such as anxiety caused by fear of the length of sentence, as well as feelings of loneliness and lack of family support for inmates in Lapas. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between family support and anxiety levels in inmates at the Class II B Padang Women's Correctional Institution. This type of research is quantitative with a correlative descriptive design and uses a cross sectional approach. Data collection is carried out for 2 days from April 10 to 11, 2023. The population is all inmates who are entering the Class IIB Padang Women's Prison for the first time. The sampling technique is random sampling with the Slovin formula, as many as 56 respondents. Data collection tools include Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS) questionnaire and family support questionnaire with questionnaire method. Univariate and bivariate data analysis. The results of the study were obtained from 56 respondents, as many as 53.6% received unsupportive family support. As for the level of anxiety, 37.5% experienced severe anxiety. The results of the chi-square test obtained p-value = 0.0001 < (α=0.05) which means that there is a significant relationship between family support and the level of anxiety of prisoners. It can be concluded that there is a relationship between family support and anxiety levels in prisoners in Padang Class II B Correctional Institution. For this reason, it is hoped that prison officers, especially prison clinic health workers, can provide deep breath relaxation therapy and are expected to continue to carry out positive coaching and activities that can reduce anxiety in prisoners. Families are also expected to always provide support and attention so that prisoners do not feel forgotten.

Abstract

Body image disturbances are a common psychological challenge among patients with Diabetes Mellitus (DM), influenced by the physical and emotional toll of the disease. Body dissatisfaction can negatively impact self-esteem, adherence to diabetes management, and overall quality of life. Positive affirmations, rooted in self-affirmation theory, have improved body image in various populations. However, there is limited research on the application of positive affirmations as an intervention for body image in DM patients. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a structured, positive affirmation intervention in improving body image among patients with Diabetes Mellitus using a quasi-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design. The study involved 40 adult DM patients participating in a 4-week positive affirmation program. Body image outcomes were measured pre-and post-intervention using the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire – Appearance Scale (MBSRQ-AS). The primary outcomes were changes in appearance evaluation, appearance orientation, body area satisfaction, and self-classified weight. Paired sample t-tests were used to analyze pre- and post-intervention differences, with effect sizes calculated using Cohen's d. Significant improvements were observed in appearance evaluation (p < 0.001, d = 0.91), body area satisfaction (p < 0.001, d = 0.80), and self-classified weight (p < 0.01, d = 0.76). Appearance orientation decreased significantly (p < 0.01, d = 0.66), indicating a reduced focus on external appearance. The intervention showed firm effect sizes across all body image dimensions. Positive affirmations effectively improved body image among DM patients, with significant improvements across multiple dimensions. This intervention offers a practical, low-cost strategy for addressing body image disturbances, potentially enhancing the psychological and physical wellbeing of DM patients. Future studies should explore long-term effects and compare the intervention with other psychosocial approaches in diverse populations.
