Abstract

According to the Data and Information Centre of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia (2018), the prevalence of caries in Indonesia is 88.8%. The World Health Organisation (WHO) reports that 60-90% of school children worldwide experience caries, with the disease being most prevalent in children aged 6-12 years. Dental caries is a disease that can infect and damage tooth structure. One of the risk factors for caries is plaque accumulation, which is associated with poor oral hygiene. The Personal Hygiene Performance Modified (PHP-M) is a method used to measure plaque on mixed teeth. This research is a quasi-experiment with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling, with a total of 27 samples meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The study found a significant improvement in oral hygiene status after participants received an educational intervention using virtual reality video media. Specifically, there was a decrease in plaque scores after brushing teeth following the intervention compared to before. The statistical analysis using the Wilcoxon test showed a significant difference with a p-value of less than 0.05. The study found that the number of students with excellent oral hygiene status increased from 15 (40.5%) before the intervention to 36 (97.3%) after the intervention. These results suggest that the use of virtual reality video media is an effective method for improving oral hygiene. Abstract

ABSTRACT Introduction: The utilization of applications as a tool for the calculation of dental and oral health indices has not yet been extensively explored. Consequently, researchers have proposed the development of the digital dental calculator application as a rapid and precise medium for the administration of oral health index surveys. Aim of this research is to analyze the use of digital dental calculator apps as an OHI-S calculation tool. Methods: The study design is quasi-experimental with a posttest-only group design. Convenient sampling was employed as the sampling technique, and the selected samples fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The inclusion criteria were students of the dental profession at Baiturrahmah University, Indonesia, who were still enrolled in or had passed the periodontics module, while the exclusion criteria were students who did not participate in the full study (manual and digital). Results: The mean time taken to calculate OHI-S calculation results manually was 207.63 seconds, while the mean time taken to calculate the same results using the digital dental calculator application was 67.97 seconds. The results of the Mann-Whitney test indicate that there is a highly statistically significant difference between manual and digital calculations using the application, with a p-value of 0.000 (<0.05). Conclusion: There is a time difference between the use of digital and manual calculations for OHI-S calculations. The findings of this study indicated that the time required to perform OHI-S calculations using digital dental calculator applications was significantly shorter than that required for manual calculations.KEYWORDSoral hygiene index simplified (OHI-S), time duration, digital dental calculator

Abstract

The effectiveness of using a digital dental calculator application on the duration of calculating the gingival index: experiment Introduction: One of the common dental and oral health issues that often occurs in Indonesia is gingivitis, characterized by swollen easily bleeding gums. Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gingiva caused by plaque accumulation along the gingival margin. The severity of gingivitis can be measured using the Gingival index (GI) by Loe and Silness, and this condition is often monitored through surveys. Traditionally, survey results in Indonesia have been calculated manually using paper and pen. However, with technological developments, a digital dental calculator has been developed to quickly and accurately calculate GI measurements. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the digital dental calculator in reducing the time required to measure GI. Methods: This research is a quasi-experiment with a post-test only group design. The sampling technique was carried out by convenience sampling with a total of 65 respondents who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria of the study. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 20 using the Mann Whitney test with a significance level of p <0.05. Results: The average time taken using manual calculation was 260.74 seconds with a standard deviation of ±30.06, while the time taken using the dental calculator application was significantly shorter, with an average of 105.69 seconds and a standard deviation of ±20.85. The Mann Whitney test results showed a significant difference in time duration p= 0.000 (p <0.05) between the use of the digital dental calculator and manual calculation in measuring GI. Conclusion: The use of digital dental calculator application significantly reduces the time required for GI score measurement.

Abstract

Oral health problems are more vulnerable in children with disabilities than children in general. One of the efforts to minimize these problems is to increase parents' awareness of the importance of maintaining effective oral health in children with disabilities. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the knowledge and skills of parents who have children with disabilities in the early detection of oral health problems so that severity does not occur. This community service program is in the form of socialization activities and early detection skills training conducted for 71 parents/caregivers on 20 September 2024 at the RSGMP Baiturrahmah Hall, Padang City. Pre and post-assessment of parents' knowledge and skills were conducted, out of 72 parents/caregivers only 39 parents/caregivers completed the pre and post-test. The results of the analysis of existing data showed a significant increase in both the knowledge and skills of parents in the early detection of oral health problems. This activity needs to be carried out regularly as a promotional effort to improve the degree of oral health in children with disabilities.
