Abstract

Abstract

Introduction: The elderly population is increasing both globally and nationally, including in Dumai City, Riau Province. The older they get, the more health problems they complain about, and xerostomia is one of the most common issues. There are only a few studies that examine the problem of xerostomia in the elderly. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine how xerostomia relates to gender, age, and overall health among elderly people in Dumai City, Riau Province. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional design approach. The survey included data on gender, age, and subjective assessment of xerostomia using the Summated Xerostomia Inventory in Indonesian (SXI-ID) questionnaire, consisting of 5 questions with answer options: never, rarely, sometimes, often, and always. In addition, the standard xerostomia question, "How often does the mouth feel dry?" has four answer options: never, sometimes, often, and always. Sampling was done by the accidental sampling technique; 247 respondents met the requirements and participated in the study completely. Results: The study showed that more respondents of the male gender (18.6 ± 2.7) suffered from xerostomia than women (17.4 ± 4.4), which was statistically significant (p<0.05). The results of the Spearman Rank correlation test between the age variable and the xerostomia condition showed statistically significant results (p<0.05), namely that the older the age, the greater the potential for xerostomia in the elderly. Conclusion: The incidence of xerostomia is more prevalent in men and as individuals age. Promotive and preventive efforts for the oral health of the elderly need to be strengthened to minimize oral health problems due to xerostomia.

Abstract

Introduction: Dental plaque is a soft biofilm that accumulates on the tooth surface and around the gingival margin. If not properly managed, it can lead to oral diseases such as gingivitis. The manual assessment of the Plaque Index (PI) has several limitations, including variability in the number of teeth examined, assessor subjectivity, and potential inaccuracy, particularly at low or high plaque levels. To overcome these challenges, a technology-based approach is needed to enhance standardization and consistency. This study aims to compare the calculation time of PI using a Digital Dental Calculator (DDC) app and the conventional manual method. Methods: A quasi-experimental study with a one-group posttest-only design was conducted among 70 dental students at Universitas Baiturrahmah who had completed the periodontics module and met inclusion and exclusion criteria. Participants performed PI calculations using both manual and digital methods under standardized conditions. The time required for each method was measured in seconds. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (mean ± SD) and the Mann–Whitney U test to compare calculation times between the two methods, with a significance level of p < 0.05. All analyses were conducted using IBM SPSS Statistics version 26.0 to ensure transparency and reproducibility. Results: The mean PI calculation time using the manual method was 178.74 seconds, while the digital DDC method required 143.97 seconds, showing a mean difference of 34.77 seconds. Statistical analysis revealed a highly significant difference between the two methods (p < 0.001), indicating that the DDC significantly reduced PI calculation time. Conclusion: The use of the Digital Dental Calculator (DDC) significantly shortened the time required to calculate the Plaque Index compared to the manual method. These findings highlight the potential of digital tools to improve efficiency, standardization, and accuracy in both clinical and educational dental settings.

Abstract

Abstract: Various types of toothbrushes are available for children with special needs, including manual toothbrushes with modified handles, electric toothbrushes, and U-shaped manual toothbrushes. Each toothbrush has inherent limitations that result in suboptimal tooth cleaning, particularly in children with mental disorders and/or fine motor skills. The objective of this study is to develop the potential of an automatic U-shaped toothbrush designed to address the specific oral hygiene needs of children with disabilities. The key scientific concepts that underpin the development of an automatic U-shaped toothbrush is an effective toothbrush for children with special needs, which is easy to use and optimal in removing debris and/or dental plaque. The results of the development of this study produced a prototype scale of the U-shaped toothbrush that simply by pressing one button can clean the entire surface of the teeth on the upper or lower jaw. In conclusion, this automatic U-shaped toothbrush is expected to be beneficial for children with poor fine motor skills, intellectual disabilities, or other special needs who have had difficulty cleaning their teeth properly.            Keywords: Automatic, Children, Special Needs, Toothbrush, U-Shaped                                                                              Abstrak: Berbagai jenis sikat gigi tersedia untuk anak-anak dengan kebutuhan khusus, termasuk sikat gigi manual dengan gagang yang dimodifikasi, sikat gigi elektrik, dan sikat gigi manual berbentuk U.
