Abstract

This study evaluates the school’s policies to implement literacy education at an elementary school during the disruptive moment of global pandemic of covid-19 and social disparity of underprivileged community. Since the global pandemic has hit Indonesia in 2020, it had major impacts on the teaching and learning process across the country, causing some disruption of the educational strategies by the school principals. The purpose of this study is to analyze the policies implemented by the school management in implementing the culture of literacy and numeracy especially during the pandemic. This ethnographic study included one private community-based elementary school in a slump area. The results of this study are that the school had specific policies in order to accommodate the literacy and numeracy practice during the pandemic according to the condition of the community but with least coommunity participation. The policies at the elementary schools dominantly focus on numeracy in the learning process instead of encouraging the literacy practice. The implementation of literacy education at an elementary school in the slump area should have required community participation in order to revitalize its social position to empower the community.

Abstract

Reading fluency is an essential skill for academic achievement. Fluent readers are able to swiftly and accurately comprehend written information, allowing them to focus on the meaning and implications of what they are reading. This paper investigates the relationship between reading fluency and academic outcomes, including reading comprehension, writing and vocabulary. The study seeks to examine the nature of this relationship, how reading fluency influences specific areas of academic achievements, and whether individual differences, such as age or reading aptitude, moderate this relationship. Fifteen students from the fourth semester of the English Department at Universitas Nusa Cendana were recruited for this study, and a longitudinal design was used to investigate the relationship between reading fluency and academic achievement. The results indicate that reading fluency is positively related to reading comprehension, writing and vocabulary knowledge. Individual differences in age and reading aptitude also appear to mitigate the relationship between reading fluency and academic achievement.

Abstract

This observational research, which focuses on teacher tactics for teaching English as a Foreign Language to primary school kids, was carried out in two classes at a public primary school. The purpose of this study was to answer the following question: what teaching tactics do the English instructors at this school use? The data were analyzed qualitatively using categories formulated based on theories related to instructional strategies, which include planning and preparing instruction, implementing the teaching and learning process, and assessing students' achievement. The study's primary findings are as follows: 1) Despite the teachers going through the same phases of preparation, the plan is followed and results differ; 2) the teachers can employ games as a learning tool. 3) even though the curriculum demands teachers to integrate the skills (reading, listening, writing, and speaking), in practice, teachers do not teach English in an integrative manner. 4) Time management has become a challenge for teachers at this school. 5) In terms of teacher assessment methodologies, the teachers examine students' success through remedial instruction once a week after the session is ended in areas where students failed to grasp.

This article used mixed research methods. Quantitative data were obtained using experimental research, while qualitative data used qualitative descriptive research. The population of this study was class VII students of SMP Negeri 3 Langsa for the 2021/2022 academic year, with a total of 48 students. They were divided into two groups: 24 students in the experimental group were taught through TikTok content, while 24 students in the control group were taught through conventional methods. This study used a written test as a tool. The t-test formula from SPSS 26 was used to assess the data. Then at a significance level of 0.025 and degrees of freedom (df) of (48), observations show that (3.12 > 2.01) was more significant than t-table (2.01). The findings show that the research hypothesis was correct. TikTok was found as an interactive learning media that can represent what the teacher cannot convey and the learning process will be more effective and efficient. It was also an excellent learning medium because there was a mix of various music, pictures and interesting features so that it was not boring for students. Careful selection criteria ensured that the study included Maguindanawn individuals with the drive to complete a degree and emerge as an accomplished professional. This study underscores the critical role of determination and resilience in surmounting obstacles and achieving career success. This compelling study investigates the myriad reason behind school dropouts among Maguindanawn students, from financial hardships to armed conflicts in their communities. One participant even suffered from psychiatric illness due to the trauma of armed conflicts. However, these obstacles did not thwart the determination of the participants to pursue their academic goals with tenacity. Through their perseverance, they excelled professionally, gained invaluable leadership skills, and served as shining examples for future Maguindanawn students. This study highlights the crucial role of education in achieving professional success and fulfilling personal aspirations. It emphasizes the need for schools in Moro-dominated areas to promote education as a vehicle for financial stability, fulfilling religious duties, and succeeding in the workplace, inspiring all students, particularly dropouts, to return to the classroom.
