Abstract

Mathematical problem-solving skills are fundamental for fostering critical thinking, creativity, and the ability to address real-life challenges. However, many primary school students struggle with applying these skills effectively. This study aims to analyze the mathematical problem-solving abilities of Grade V elementary students using Polya’s four-stage problem-solving model. This qualitative descriptive research involved 56 Grade V students from a primary school. Data were collected using a mathematical problem-solving test focused on numerical material. Students' responses were analyzed based on Polya’s stages: understanding the problem, devising a plan, carrying out the plan, and looking back. The data analysis included data collection, reduction, presentation, and verification. The findings revealed that students showed the highest proficiency in understanding the problem (37%), followed by planning the solution (30%), solving the problem (23%), and rechecking their work (17%). These results indicate a declining trend in performance as students progress through each problem-solving stage. The study highlights students’ limited abilities in applying strategic and reflective thinking, particularly in later stages of the problem-solving process. This suggests a need for instructional approaches that promote active engagement, systematic thinking, and creative problem-solving. Educators are encouraged to adopt learning models that support student-centered learning and facilitate the development of higher-order thinking skills.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of AI-assisted learning in enhancing students’ scientific argumentation skills within Islamic Religious Education (PAI) at SMKN Widang. As digital tools become more integrated into education, understanding their impact on higher-order thinking skills is increasingly relevant. A quasi-experimental design was employed, involving two groups: an experimental class (XI-A) that used AI tools such as ChatGPT for constructing arguments and receiving instant feedback, and a control class (XI-B) that received conventional instruction. Data were collected through argumentation tests, classroom observations, and interviews. Statistical analysis was conducted using an independent sample t-test in SPSS 26. The experimental group showed a significantly higher improvement in argumentation skills (Mean = 76.34, SD = 15.53) compared to the control group (Mean = 55.34, SD = 17.99), with a large effect size (Cohen’s d = 1.25, p 0.05). AI tools facilitated student engagement by enabling real-time feedback, personalized content, and multiple perspectives, particularly in discussing contemporary issues like brawls and substance abuse from an Islamic viewpoint. These findings suggest that AI-based learning can effectively support scientific argumentation in religious education contexts by fostering deeper analysis and critical thinking. Despite limitations—such as being restricted to one institution and a single AI tool—the results highlight the potential of AI integration for contextual and individualized learning. Future studies could explore broader applications across disciplines and educational levels.

Abstract

Modern aircraft maintenance requires technicians to demonstrate higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) to diagnose and resolve complex avionic system failures. However, assessment practices in vocational avionic training often emphasize procedural recall rather than analytical and evaluative reasoning. This study addresses this gap by developing and evaluating Quizizz-based interactive learning media and HOTS-oriented assessments tailored to avionic training contexts. A research and development approach employing the ADDIE model was implemented using a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design. The study involved 22 avionic trainees at the Lion Group Training Center, Tangerang. Data were collected through expert validation, trainee questionnaires, interviews, and pretest–posttest assessments. Statistical analyses included normality testing, paired-sample t-tests, and N-Gain analysis. Expert validation indicated high feasibility of the developed media, with acceptance rates of 83% from media experts and 88% from material experts, while trainee responses reached 86%. Descriptive statistics showed a substantial increase in posttest mean scores compared to pretest results. The paired-sample t-test revealed a statistically significant improvement in critical thinking skills (p 0.05). The N-Gain score (mean = 0.58) indicated a moderate-to-high level of learning improvement. The findings suggest that scenario-based, gamified assessments delivered through Quizizz effectively support the development of critical thinking skills in avionic training. This study highlights the potential of integrating HOTS-oriented digital assessments in vocational education while recommending further multi-site and longitudinal research to strengthen generalizability.

Abstract

The Finnish education model is widely recognized for its holistic, flexible, and student-centered approach. However, its implementation in other contexts, such as Indonesia, presents significant structural and cultural challenges. This study explores how secondary school teachers in Indonesia understand Finnish educational principles, the obstacles they face in adopting them, and the strategies they employ for contextual adaptation. A qualitative phenomenological design was used to capture teachers' lived experiences. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis at three secondary schools in Central Java, representing diverse institutional and socio-cultural contexts. Thematic analysis was conducted through open coding, axial coding, and selective coding. The study identified three major barriers to adaptation: institutional rigidity, incompatibility with the prevailing learning culture, and limitations in educational infrastructure. Teachers demonstrated varying levels of understanding of Finnish principles, influenced by their training and school environment. Adaptation strategies included implementing interest-based projects, promoting flexible learning methods, and fostering more humanistic teacher–student relationships. The findings suggest that adapting Finnish educational values in Indonesia is not a matter of replication but requires contextual translation. Successful implementation depends on sustained teacher professional development, culturally responsive curriculum design, and policy support that enables flexibility while addressing local constraints. Finnish educational principles can inspire meaningful innovation in Indonesian schools when adapted thoughtfully. Building a supportive ecosystem through training, policy, and cultural sensitivity is key to bridging global models with local realities.
