Abstract

During the past decades, processes of (post)modernization have raised the importance of quality-of-life issues and related policies, resulting in a higher salience of intimate citizenship issues on the political agenda. The Catholic Church as an institution especially has been articulating strong positions on issues considered to be about personal and family morality, actively opposing liberalization of abortion or even contraception, assisted reproduction for non-married couples, and the extension of marriage rights to homosexual people. This paper will investigate to what extent the framing of a number of intimate citizenship issues (reproductive rights, abortion, same-sex marriage and divorce) by the Catholic Church resonates with the framing of these issues in Catholic countries that are members or candidate to the European Union, and whether the presence or absence of resonance is linked to the degree of religiosity of the population, the support for Catholic religious values or to the institutional strength of the Catholic Church. The analysis will show to what extent we find ?Catholic? frames in the various countries and how that is connected to the level of religiosity, the support for Catholic religious values or the institutional strength of the Catholic Church.

Islam as a social religion strongly supports the effort to establish the relationship of human dignity as a whole. For that, it seems necessary to have a persuasive communication that can touch the psychological aspects of various societies. Abstract

Education is closely associated with religion. Education is the doctrine of morals and intelligence of the mind and religion is belief in God with the teachings of worship and obligations. Religion prepares a comprehensive norm that underlies life educational purposes. Educational institutions have played their significant part in the production and reproduction of European warfare. Nationalist curricula in history, national language and literature, social sciences and religion typify many school systems. Educational institutions are theoretically the opposition to those of religion: critical exegesis of all texts and the subjection of all theories to rigorous attempts at falsification are the commonplace expectations of educational institutions. All too often, however, religious organizations are actually in charge of schools and even universities. Of course state sponsored educational systems have other objectives, which take precedence over the pursuit of knowledge, in particular social control and nation building. It is in these two areas that the alliance between church and state in the control of the reproduction of knowledge is at its most symbiotic. Schools and universities, ostensibly the key intuitions of modernization and modernity, are in actuality one of the main sites for the production and reproduction of religion.
