Abstract

The practice of mutual cooperation, traditionally aimed at strengthening community collectivity and affectivity, has undergone notable changes, particularly in the context of labor commodification within these practices. Based on this, this research aims to analyze the commodification of labor in mutual cooperation practices and the factors behind it. This research employs a qualitative approach with a case study method, utilizing purposive sampling for participant selection and in-depth interviews for data collection, while the analysis is conducted using the Miles and Huberman interactive model. The results reveal that the commodification of labor in mutual cooperation reflects a significant shift in reciprocal relationships, as theorized by George Caspar Homans' social exchange theory, which emphasizes the balance of expected rewards against incurred costs in social actions. Initially, rewards in mutual cooperation were viewed as social agreements that fostered community solidarity and emotional connection. However, this perspective has shifted, with mutual cooperation increasingly being treated as a material commodity. This change is largely attributed to societal unpreparedness in facing the social pressures of the Covid-19 pandemic and the resultant social jealousy caused by the unequal distribution of social assistance during the crisis. Remarkably, even after the pandemic, the trend of labor commodification in mutual cooperation continues, driven by persistent societal envy over the inequity of pandemic-related social assistance, highlighting the lasting impact of societal and economic pressures on traditional social practices.

Abstract

This research aims to explain the development of slum organizations in Cirebon City during the colonial period (1906-1942). This research is motivated by the lack of research on organizations in Cirebon during the colonial period. The method used is the historical method with four stages of work, namely heuristics, criticism, interpretation and historiography. The sources used in this research consist of primary and secondary sources. The approach used is a political approach with the environmental ethics theory of anthropocentrism and the concept of slum organizations. The research results show that Cirebon was a dirty city in the 19th century due to the population explosion and the implementation of segregation. restructuring efforts emerged since Cirebon's status was elevated to Gemeente (municipality) in 1906. It peaked in 1927 and 1938 with the construction of public housing in Kesunean and Pasar Pagi as well as a model village in Pekiringan. However, in practice organizational improvements do not always receive a positive response, for example hundreds of indigenous houses were destroyed without being rebuilt. Nevertheless, this arrangement succeeded in improving organizational conditions in the city and creating a society that was aware of hygiene.

Abstract

This article attempts to trace the spatiality of urban space in Purwokerto using Lefebvian theory. The main urban space in this article is Gedung Soetedja which was previously located on Jalan Gatot Soebroto, Purwokerto Barat. As long as it was an urban space, the central discourse of Gedung Soetedja was underground music which was born from the movements of urban youth in Indonesia in the early 2000s. The method used in this article is descriptive qualitative. The data was obtained through interviews with 2 actors and organizers of underground gigs in early 2000s, 2 actors of a youth collective called Heartcorner Collective, 2 cafe owners who were often used to Heartcorner Collective organize gigs (micro scale underground music concert), and 1 journalist. This data was obtained from May-August 2023. The findings of this article are the efforts of a collective, the Heartcorner Collective, to create urban spatiality through re-reading underground music discourse, placemaking, and spatiality of urban spaces. Furthermore, this article also presents things that caused Gedung Soetedja to lose its inclusiveness when Pemerintah Daerah Kabupaten Banyumas moved it to its new location.

Abstract

Working for maintenance of the plants requires a high level of focus and a lot of time. The female gardeners are assigned to maintain the beauty of the Sebelas Maret University (UNS) environment. However, there are problems faced by workers both in the work environment and at home. The wages earned are low and only enough to get food needs. Even though there are many shortcomings, the decision to look for another place of work never occurred to workers. Professionalism remains the main vision instilled by workers. The aim of this research was to determine the survival abilities of female gardeners in facing problems and obstacles in their lives. This research uses a qualitative method with a case study approach. Data collection techniques are interviews and sample determination through purposive sampling techniques. The results of this research show the form of survival practices carried out by female gardeners namely by refraining from all desires, earning a double income, and building relationships. Network strategies become the dominant form of survival practice used by workers. Relationships are not only a way for information and a means of assistance, but also as a strengthening medium for them to avoid bad psychological conditions.

Abstract

During the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, universities and colleges opted to give students provisional (P) grades instead of directly failing the students who had not complied with academic requirements. This study presents the voices of the instructors of a University in Southern Philippines on giving students provisional grades. The participants of the study were the instructors from the three colleges of the University. The study was qualitative, and open-ended questions were used to gather data through interviews. Content analysis was used to analyze the data gathered. Themes generated from the participants include challenges in interacting with students, students’ lack of concentration, students’ lack of compliance, and students taking advantage of provisional grades. With this, the researchers recommend that the University should provide training and seminars to the instructors and students on topics such as mental health awareness, advocacy, and digital literacy. Moreover, whenever the University comes up with a new policy, it is beneficial to ask for feedback from stakeholders to gain insights into how the policy might affect them and ensure that their rights will be respected and upheld. This is to ensure that the policy is fair, transparent, and equitable

Abstract

Adolescent parenting is child care carried out by parents who are still teenagers. Ngantang District is one of the areas with the highest number of early marriages, reaching 20%-30% of teenagers. Therefore, this research aims to determine the factors that make teenage couples marry and have children at an early age and how parenting patterns or implementation of adolescent parenting in teenage couples are in accordance with Bigner & Gerhald's adolescent parenting theory. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study type of research that focuses on exploring bound systems. The subjects in this research were determined using a purposive sampling technique and checking the validity of the data was carried out using the source triangulation method. The research results illustrate the role of parental support in the motivation of teenage couples and out-of-wedlock pregnancies to have children at an early age. The pattern of adolescent parenting in this study shows that adolescent couples provide quite good responsiveness to children but are less demanding, so it can be categorized as permissive parenting. It was also found that there were differences between adolescent parenting by adolescent fathers and mothers, lack of education and knowledge influenced the pattern of adolescent parenting provided.
