Abstract

Abstract. This study aimed to describe the numeral classifier for counting the mode of transportation in Japanese and explain its use. Data collection was carried out using the observation method with basic tapping techniques. Data analysis was conducted using the intralingual matching method, with three basic techniques: the comparative and equalize technique, the comparative and differentiate technique, and the comparative and equalize the main thing. The research results showed variations in the Japanese numeral classifier used to count land, water, and air transportation. The most significant variation was found in counting water transportation, which were 13 numeral classifiers found: seki, sō, tei, hai, kan, sen, ha/yō, hon, hen, han/ho, mai, fusa, and toko/shō. In contrast, the slightest variation was found in counting air transportation, with four variations of the numeral classifier: ki, dai, bin, and seki. To count land transportation, 11 numeral classifiers were found, namely chō/tei, ryō, dai, tōtachi, rin, jō, hon, ressha, kisha, hansei, and bin. Although various numeral classifiers were used for each type of transportation, the same numeral classifiers could be used to count the two different transportation types. The hon numeral classifier was a numeral classifier that could be used to count both land and water types of transportation. Of the four numeral classifiers used to count air transportation, three could also be used to count land and water transportation. Apart from being used to count transportation in the air, the numeral classifiers dai and bin were also used to count the transportation type on land. In contrast, the numeral classifier seki, used to count air transportation, was also used to count water transportation. On the other hand, some numeral classifiers could also be used to count various types of transportation depending on the object's point of view. Keywords: air transportation, land transportation, Japanese, numeral classifier, water transportation

Abstract

Abstract: The research aims to identify and describe competencies related to language acquisition of 2-year-old children in the digital disruption era. This research is based on the phenomenon of the times that triggered the digital disruption era to affect children's language acquisition. This research focused on a case study of a 2-year-old child's language acquisition at the phonological and morphosyntactic levels. This research design is descriptive qualitative with a theoretical approach, psycholinguistics. The subject and data source was a 2-year-old boy with the initials DBS. The data collection technique was conducted using participant and non-participant observation techniques, while the data analysis technique included condensation, display, and conclusion/verification. The research results showed: (1) DBS phonology acquisition competence consists of 9 vowel phonemes with minimal vocalic system dominance, 18 consonant phonemes including trill sounds with minimal consonantal system dominance, two diphthongs from national and foreign languages phoneme, one foreign language cluster phoneme which is replacing with the closest mother tongue phoneme; (2) DBS morphosyntactic acquisition competence is dominated by word function in the form of subject, word role in the form of actor, and word category in the form of the noun. In conclusion, the language acquisition competence of two-year-old children in the digital disruption era is quite varied from the previous era, in line with the acquisition of Javanese, Indonesian, English, and Malay lexicons. Keywords: Digital Disruption, Language Competence, Psycholinguistic, Two-Year-Old Child

Abstract

Abstract. Study on metadiscourse covers various genres of texts, both academic and non-academic texts. This study concerns the genre of regulation that is still rarely studied. It aims to explain the types and functions of metadiscourse in local government regulation. By using descriptive qualitative design, it studied the local government regulation for Sumenep tourism development in particular for the front matter and the section of the core content of the regulation, excluding part of the explanation or attachment. Data in the form of clauses and sentences used which contain metadiscourse markers. Results of the study have shown that there are transitions, endophoric markers, and evidentials of interactive metadiscourse. There are no frame markers and code glosses. Endophoric markers are the most frequently used functions to refer to information from the text previously stated, evidentials that refer to information from other texts are mainly used to refer to other forms of the constitution, laws, ministerial regulation, and other government regulations as the basis of regulation drafting, and the least is transitions that functions to relate between main clause to be coherent and easily understood as a whole text.  Meanwhile, all categories of interactional metadiscourse markers are not found in this genre of regulation. The use of metadiscourse markers can assist in engaging the reader by signaling the writer's attitude, position, or assessment of the presented information. This can render the text more interactive and persuasive. Keywords: metadiscourse, regulation, tourism, Sumenep, Madura

Abstract

In Indonesian, intimacy, social status, and politeness can be linguistically marked. Conversely, a near equivalent English pronoun cannot always completely contextualize the foregoing aspects. This study examines the translation of pronouns in movie subtitles entitled “Noktah Merah Perkawinan” to see if aspects beyond meaning, such as politeness and hierarchy, are conveyed. Data for this study were collected from subtitles in both Indonesian and English. A parallel corpus and mark segment were created for each pronoun found in both subtitles, and pronouns were identified bidirectionally. Using Molina & Albir's translation techniques and Sneddon's analytical schemes of Indonesian pronouns, the translations were analyzed in relation to theories of politeness and grammar. The findings reveal that some translations are acceptable and semantically accurate, but some fail to convey social aspects, kinship relationships, and levels of politeness as expressed in the source language (Indonesian). We argue that this is caused by cultural and grammatical differences between Indonesian and English. These findings have significant social implications, highlighting the need for deeper cultural understanding  in translation practices. When the translated pronouns fail to convey crucial social dynamics, such as hierarchy or respect the subtitled content may unintentionally misrepresent interpersonal relationships, impacting cross-cultural communication.

Abstract

Abstract. While Indonesian novels have been explored for their depiction of ecological crises, there has yet to be a detailed examination of how these narratives reflect the ensuing socio-ecological systems. This study investigates the portrayal of socio-ecological systems within Indonesian novels in the context of ecological crises. Employing qualitative methods and content analysis, this research utilizes the updated socio-ecological systems framework proposed by McGinnis and Ostrom (2014). The findings reveal various aspects of the crises represented, including forest destruction, forest fires, air pollution, animal extinction, and the degradation of natural reserves. Furthermore, the ecological crisis that has occurred actually gives rise to a socio-ecological system that represents the internal relationships among the resource system, government system, resource unit, and actors, and is influenced by external factors such as the social, economic, and political settings, and related ecosystems. Additionally, this representation of the socio-ecological system provides insights into the conditions of the ecological crisis in Indonesia, particularly in palm oil plantations and nature reserves. Keywords: Ecological Crisis, Social-Ecological System, Indonesian Novels, Ecocriticism

Abstract

Abstract. In Indonesia, children are often exposed to multiple languages from an early age. English, being the dominant foreign language, poses challenges in learning due to the limited vocabulary among students. Previous studies suggest that traditional methods might not be sufficiently effective in improving English proficiency, especially in vocabulary acquisition. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of integrating songs into English language education for elementary students, focusing on vocabulary enhancement and overall language skills improvement. An experimental research design was employed involving 80 elementary students from the first grade, divided into control and experimental groups. The intervention consisted of using English children's songs in the language learning process, with assessments conducted through pre-tests and post-tests to measure vocabulary acquisition and retention. The experimental group, exposed to the song-based learning method, showed significant improvements in English vocabulary compared to the control group. Post-test results indicated a higher average score in vocabulary tests for the experimental group. Incorporating songs into language education can significantly enhance vocabulary learning and retention among young learners. This method provides a conducive learning environment and fosters better engagement with the language. Keywords: English proficiency, language learning, multiligualism, song-based education
