Abstract

Abstract. This study delves into the various factors that influence the essay writing skills of college students, including motivation, literacy, cognitive abilities, and language proficiency. A mixed-method approach was used, combining qualitative and quantitative methods. The data was collected through questionnaire surveys and interviews to analyze the impact of these factors on students' writing capabilities. The findings reveal that the majority of students find writing enjoyable, with over 90% expressing interest in essay composition. However, procrastination tendencies were observed, with 46% of students admitting to submitting essays on the last day. Furthermore, excessive instructor feedback negatively affected the motivation of more than 50% of respondents. Regarding literacy, approximately 66% of students engage in daily reading, a critical component for enhancing writing skills. A strong correlation between reading and writing was identified, as students often utilize relevant sources to support their essays. However, 75% of participants admitted to reading primarily within the confines of coursework. Cognitive capabilities played a significant role, with over 80% of students effectively planning and developing essay content. However, content comprehension proved to be challenging for 56%, affecting the coherence of their essays. Interviews revealed difficulties in paragraph development and topic selection. Language skills were deemed essential for coherent writing, with 80% of students constructing sentences adeptly and employing grammar effectively. Despite these skills, students struggled with syntax and word choice. Interviews highlighted issues with sentence construction and word selection, impacting the clarity of their messages. The research findings can potentially be implemented to design strategies, models, and learning media that focus on improving the essay writing proficiency of college students. Keywords: Motivation, Literacy, Cognitive Abilities, Language Skills, Essay Writing

Abstract

Abstract. Digital media provides the latest news on global issues, particularly in the realm of religion, attracting a broad audience. This research explores how international mass media outlets Al-Jazeera and BBC frame their coverage of Hamas' attack on Israel on October 7. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive research method, the study aims to comprehensively depict the framing processes employed by Al-Jazeera and BBC in reporting on the Hamas-Israel conflict. Primary data includes Al-Jazeera's article "Why the Palestinian group Hamas launched an attack on Israel? All to know" and BBC News Indonesia's piece titled "What is Hamas and why is it fighting with Israel in Gaza?" Secondary data from relevant scholarly studies supports the research. Data collection involves reading and note-taking, while data analysis follows Miles and Huberman's model—data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Findings reveal that Al-Jazeera defines Hamas' attack on Israel as a defensive measure, emphasizing its causes and making moral judgments by comparing Hamas' damage to Israel's actions. Al-Jazeera recommends characterizing Israel's actions against Palestine as genocide. On the other hand, BBC portrays Hamas' assault as sudden terrorism, neglecting Israel's criminal history. In its moral assessment, BBC focuses on Hamas' crimes to support a terrorist narrative. Treatment recommendations by BBC attempt to legitimize Israel's colonization efforts by highlighting that Palestine lacks recognition as an independent state by the UN. Differences in framing in the reporting of the Hamas-Israel conflict can affect diplomacy and peace efforts in the region as well as international support for one of the parties. International mass media are not always objective in reporting conflicts because they are influenced by political and ideological interests. This can lead to criticism of media objectivity and fairness and raises questions about the media's responsibility in shaping public opinion that can influence the development of conflicts. Keywords: Framing, Mass Media, Hamas Attack, Israel, Robert Entman

Abstract

Abstract. The active involvement of students when learning Arabic language speaking skills using comic media has implicitly raised and produced the process of creative thinking ability. The creative thinking ability produced by students during the learning process can be reviewed in more detail based on its aspects. According to Guilford, this study aims to reveal the utilization of comic media for Arabic speaking skills to improve creative thinking. This study includes qualitative research using a case study design with a type of single case instrument that produces descriptive data. The descriptive data was collected by 1) observation of the learning process, 2) distribution of observation results and their classification on Guilford's creative thinking ability, and 3) data disclosure and reporting. The selection of participants used a purposive sampling technique on 32 ninth-grade students.  Using the interactive model for analysis technique by identifying comic media developed and implemented to describe and classify all learning activities from speaking skills to creative thinking ability based on Guilford's theory. The study's findings show that four different comic activities, all of which improve students' ability for creative thought when learning to speak Arabic, namely: a) dialog, including associational fluency, expressional fluency, and originality; b) survey, including associational fluency, ideational fluency, and spontaneous flexibility; c) development of description, featuring associational fluency, ideational fluency, and spontaneous flexibility; d) storytelling, including ideational fluency, expressional fluency, and originality. Using students' imaginations and experiences employing comics as a teaching tool for speaking skills can enhance and promote creative thinking.  This creative thinking during Arabic language learning has created active student engagement to communicate actively and confidently, driving the improvisation of speaking skills. Keywords: Arabic Speaking Skills, Comic Media, Creative Thinking

Abstract

Abstract. Student success is one of key goals of higher education, thus necessary steps are taken to identify how it can be achieved. However, students vary in their ability and performance in completing their studies with various factors attributing to these variations. This study offers identification of the factors within the context of English language program. Examining students’ perception, it attempts to reveal ways in which personal, internal, and external factors and different stages of study may interact to influence student's academic performance. The primary data was a Google Form Questionnaire to 217 students (n=217) of the English literature study program in a state university in Yogyakarta. Through descriptive statistics, the Likert Rating Scale data were analyzed using R. Qualitative data underwent reduction, categorization, and representation using R Qualitative Data Analysis (RQDA). Findings reveal that the Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) satisfied the goodness of fit criterion. The linear regression analysis using the variables from the CFA model revealed that University Learning Facilities, Liking one’s study program, Courses meeting students’ expectations, and Student's Interest in the courses explained 51.31% of the variation (R-squared=0.513) in Students' Academic Performance. However, lecturers negatively impact students’ success, alongside factors like mental health. Further research through in-depth interviews with alumni could establish a more supportive academic system. Keywords: CFA, EFA, student’s academic performance, motivation factors, obstructing factors

Abstract

Abstract. Modernization had a significant impact on environmental change. This change is described in the novel “Baitun Nakhil” and studied by using ecocritical theory. Ecocriticism is a way to describe the relationship between humans and nature in all cultural environments. This study aims to identify ecological narratives related to environmental change as the modernization impact in the novel “Baitun Nakhil” by Tarek Eltayeb based on Garrard’s ecocritical perspective. This study is qualitative descriptive. The data used are narratives and dialogue in the novel “Baitun Nakhil”. Data were collected by reading and note-taking techniques. Data were validated by increasing persistence, triangulation, and discussion. Data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman method, which consists of three stages: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The results of the study are the discovery of environmental change as a modernization impact in several scopes according to Garrard as follows: 1) pastoral narratives in the form of spatial and temporal distinction; 2) pollution caused by cigarettes and sirens; 3) wilderness as in mountains and forest; 4) natural disasters in the form of a snowstorm; 5) dwelling adopts the georgic concept as in Wad Al-Kababish; 6) relation between animals and human as shown by the treatment of animals and imitation of bird sounds; and 7) earth changes initiated by the plastic usage and the construction of greenhouse as conservation efforts. This study proves that modernization destroys nature due to the massive exploitation of natural resources. Conversely, modernization makes it easier to campaign and conserve nature with its sophisticated technology. Keywords: Ecocriticism, Environmental Change, Greg Garrard, Modernization, Novel

Abstract

Abstract. Writing instructions pose challenges for educators, as students often struggle to effectively express their ideas in writing. First language influence further complicates the writing process. With the emergence of ChatGPT, this paper aims to explore its potential application in the writing classroom. This study investigates the strategies employed by students in integrating ChatGPT, an AI language model, into their writing process. Seven outstanding undergraduate students of the Applied English program preparing themselves for Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA) were asked to write some simple essays. They are encouraged to utilize ChatGPT to help them improve their writing. Their portfolio of essays was used to explore how students utilize this technology to enhance their writing skills and evaluate the effectiveness of such integration. Some in-depth interviews were also conducted with these students who actively engaged with ChatGPT to understand how they enhance their writing skills through the help of ChatGPT: students' experiences and approaches to incorporating ChatGPT into their writing workflow, including idea generation, improving sentence structure and grammar, enhancing coherence and flow, and expanding vocabulary. Perceived benefits and challenges associated with integrating ChatGPT are examined, including: effects on confidence, efficiency, and writing quality. Concerns regarding overreliance, plagiarism, and authenticity of the written work are also addressed. This study's findings highlight the efficacy of integrating AI language models in writing classes through ChatGPT's writing suggestions, enhancing students' expression, structure, and style. Further the study shows that while ChatGPT improves students' writing skills , it raises concerns about overreliance and plagiarism. Ethical guidelines and long-term studies are needed to address dependency issues and maintain authenticity. Assessing ChatGPT's adaptability across writing contexts is crucial for responsible integration in education, advancing AI-assisted writing understanding. Keywords: college writing, ChatGPT, learning strategies

Abstract

This paper explores the use of English language in one communicative situation, known as English meeting club. Generally, English club meetings are designed to practice students’ conversations in English, and therefore, speakers or participants are expected to use English in their communication. In this paper, conversations in English club meetings are explored to see the styles of communication used. The main objectives were to find out the styles of languages or expressions used in English meeting clubs. The paper was based on the descriptive qualitative studies conducted in one English club meeting in Makassar, South Sulawesi. Data collected by recording the process of discussion in three meetings and analyzed the transcribed recordings by using the technique of Discourse Analysis. Findings show some styles in using the language to communicate such as the use of unstructured language, the use of first language and code-switching, and the use of polite markers. It can be seen that formality and informality are found in the communication applied in English meeting clubs. Results of these findings are significant in the study of sociolinguistics, a study of language use in a particular society, as well as in the study of TEFL, teaching of English as a foreign language.

Abstract

Abstract. This study investigated students’ perception of flow experience (FE) when reading extensively and conditions that enabled FE. The participants were 36 EFL students from a private university in West Java, Indonesia who were involved in an extensive reading (ER) program using the XReading application. This study is a quantitative study which data were collected through questionnaire distribution and students’ reading results in Xreading. Regarding the findings, it was found that the students experienced flow during their extensive reading. Specifically,  although when joining ER for two semesters the students experienced flow, the flow experience in the two semesters is high. Second, the study found that the most significant condition for the students to experience flow is feedback. Third, the correlation result between students’ flow and the numbers of words they read in the first and second semester were respectively not statistically significant and technically a positive correlation. However, the relationship between the variables is weak in the second semester, The result also showed that in the 2nd semester the larger the number of words read, the higher the students’ flow experience is which indicated that more often the students do ER, the bigger their chance to experience flow.  Therefore, increasing students’ opportunities for experiencing flows could improve the quality of their language learning. Keywords: Flow, Extensive Reading, Optimal Experience

Abstract

Abstract. Metacognitive awareness has been recognized as a predictor of learning outcome, especially in tertiary level of education, and particularly in second and foreign language teaching and learning of writing. This component is crucial for EFL students whose first language is not English. In order to fulfill the demands of their own academic careers and future studies, there is a rising requirement for students to acquire more in-depth topic knowledge and to improve their text-analysis, planning, monitoring and evaluation skills. However, few studies have been conducted to examine metacognitive awareness in relation to argumentative writing. This study reports a quantitative study that investigates the correlation between EFL students’ metacognitive awareness and argumentative writing performance. Data collected in this study include a questionnaire and argumentative writing scores. Participants were 30 EFL students at one of the universities in Indonesia. The findings reveal that students’ metacognitive awareness is at an intermediate level while it was statistically insignificant that a relationship between their metacognitive awareness and their argumentative writing performance. The results suggest urgent action from EFL teachers and stake-holders to seek a feasible solution to foster students’ implementation of their metacognitive awareness into their writing and other language skills. Keywords: Argumentative writing, correlational study, EFL students, metacognitive awareness.
