The study applied a descriptive qualitative method. In this case, the writer collected, classified, and described the data using the method. The source of data consists of documents taken from novel Lolita with its translation. To get the data, the writer read the English and the Indonesian novel carefully and identified the kinds of sexist language and its translations. The writer got 100 data of sexist language and 105 data for techniques of translation. The reason why the data of translation techniques are more than the data of characteristics of sexist language is because there is one data that used more than one translation techniques. The results of the study showed that: (1) there are 5 kinds of sexist language found in the novel i.e. 1) Man as Standard, 2) Women Are Different, 3) Non-Human Terms, 4) Negative Words, and the last, 5) Sex-Role Descriptors, (2) there are 8 kinds of translation technique used to translate sexist expression i.e. adaptation, borrowing, established equivalent, generalization, description, modulation, variation, and deletion.

Abstract

Abstract. J.M. Coetzee's Disgrace's relational transgression analysis is essential to comprehending literary analysis, ethical ramifications, society impact, and human behavior. People can learn more about the reasons behind such offenses, as well as the psychological and sociological elements that play a role by analyzing David Lurie's acts and the effects they have. This research aims to analyze the relation transgression committed by the character David Lurie in J.M. Coetzee's novel Disgrace and to delve deeper into why individuals engage in actions that breach social norms and how such actions impact individuals and society. Using a literary psychology approach through a descriptive qualitative research method, this study reveals the dominant characteristics of Lurie that trigger relation transgression.  The whole research is conducted by means of descriptive qualitative research method using content analysis. The analysis results show that Lurie has a tendency to violate social norms, particularly concerning his sexual desires. His arrogance and reluctance to apologize exacerbate the situation and isolate him from his social environment. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the complexity of characters in literary works and the implications of violating relational bonds in individual lives. By referring to the theory of relational transgression, this research highlights how Lurie's actions not only impact himself but also those around him. Effective preventive and intervention techniques may be developed with the help of the examination of Lurie's relational transgression in Disgrace. Communities can be made safer, healthier, and more inclusive by educating people on the underlying causes and effects of such behavior. By understanding the root causes and consequences of relational transgression, it is hoped that more effective prevention and intervention strategies can be developed. Keywords: Apology; arrogance; relation transgression; sexual desire

Abstract

Abstract. This study aims to elucidate the most contrasting differences between Mandarin and Indonesian language rules. Based on the analysis results, it is hoped that this can serve as a foundation for creating a learning media, namely a descriptive material table. The study reveals that the most contrasting rule lies in the Indonesian language auxiliary number words, which have no more than 30 auxiliary number words, whereas in Mandarin, or known as 量, there are over 200 such words. Additionally, there is a rule for constructing past tense sentences. In Indonesian, a word meaning “finished” is used to indicate the past, contrasting with Mandarin, which employs the particle “了”, which can also have different meanings according to different rules. Furthermore, there is a Numeral system rule where Indonesian simply translates numbers into letters, while Mandarin has specific and detailed rules; this clearly presents a contrasting difference. There is also a rule on reduplication, or in Mandarin termed 重叠, where the quantity of rules between the two languages is almost balanced, yet the functions of usage are vastly contrasting. Lastly, there is the rule of “离合词”, a Mandarin language rule that has no equivalent in Indonesian. The method employed is a mixed-method approach, along with a narrative elaboration model based on quantitative differences in the amount of data between Mandarin and Indonesian languages, which are then expounded upon qualitatively. The data source used is the Confucius Institute (孔子学院) recommended books: 标准教程 Standard Course HSK (Hanyu Shuping Kaoshi / Chinese Proficiency Tes) 1 - 6 下 (Part 2). Data analysis techniques include identification, classification, and presentation of the results of data analysis. The results of the research and presentation show that there is a big gap between Mandarin and Bahasa Indonesia linguistic tools, with each of the rules that bind it. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a learning media to reduce this gap. Keywords: Material description table, Applied Contrastive Analysis, Mandarin, Indonesian Learners.

Abstract

Abstract. Many students still struggle with reading comprehension, particularly in the areas of identifying topics, using proper grammar, understanding meaning, and expanding vocabulary. This study focuses on determining the effectiveness of applying the Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) model in reading comprehension, especially in composing recount text. It focuses on finding solutions to the students' reading issues in relation to the four aspects including topic, grammar,   meaning,   and   vocabulary.   The pre-experimental research design was used to carry out this research. Pre-test observations in class were also carried out by researchers before implementing the CIRC model. After carrying out the pre-test, the CIRCL model continued to be applied in class. Random sampling was used with 30 students of VIII D Secondary School in Bandung. During the course of the investigation, classes were observed and reading assessments, including pre-tests and post-tests, were administered to students. The results of this research indicated that CIRC use both individually and in groups significantly helps students' reading comprehension abilities. It was shown that the students' active participation in the implementation of CIRC model enhanced their reading comprehension abilities. Students also demonstrated positive outcomes towards numerous activities and features of the CIRC model.  This study suggests that the CIRC model can be integrated into teaching strategies in school to improve reading skills, and also encourages collaborative learning, which is essential for students’ social development in the classroom. Keywords: CIRC Model, reading comprehension, recount text

Abstract

Abstract. This study highlights the effectiveness of the Time Zone in English Language (Ti-ZEL) program in improving speaking abilities among academic staff at one of the public universities in Pontianak, Indonesia. This was a mixed-method study that included some participants with provoked tests and treatments. Other forms of observation and interviews were conducted to evaluate the overall obstacles and success factors of the Ti-ZEL program. The program significantly improved speaking abilities with measurable progress (p < 0.001). The findings underscore the importance of providing opportunities and supportive environments for English practice within habituation programs. Success factors included respondents' basic English skills, an engaging and practical approach, and consistent commitment. Challenges included technical and non-technical barriers, limited proficiency, internal factors (job exhaustion, mental strain), and external distractions (workload, other activities). This cultivated approach greatly governs the level of skill improvement in speaking English. This strongly concludes the necessity of enhancing the English language skill among the academic staff of the university using the Ti-ZEL habituation model. Implementing this approach to the academic staff was new and at first unfamiliar but it proved to be successful. Keywords: Ti-ZEL, English habituation program, speaking abilities, academic staff

Abstract

The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy depicts in depth the crisis of modernity faced by the lower caste Untouchables, primarily through the character of Velutha. Modernity itself is an emerging value in a society that is associated with domination over irrationality. The main conflict at issue in this research is the clash that occurs in traditional Indian society represented by the upper-caste, Touchable, and the low-caste, Untouchable. Caste discrimination as a form of conflict is still deeply embedded in Indian society. The low caste, commonly referred to as Untouchables, experience many difficulties in their struggle for identity and in rationalizing thoughts that are constrained by the culture of society that continues to view them with the stigma of lower caste. The struggle of the Untouchables against the power structure at that time was divided into several difficult phases, such as the case of Velutha's forbidden relationship with an upper caste named Ammu. Thus, it was found that the main enemy in their struggle was the social norms of the society itself. The conclusion was that the conflict between tradition and modernity remained deeply rooted, and hopes for change and equality failed to be achieved. This is the final finding of this research, named a crisis of modernity. The implication is the need to continue to fight for individual rights and against all forms of discrimination, as well as supporting social change that is equitable for all.
