Abstract

Abstract. This research examines the relationship between the psychological personalities of perpetrators and victims of sexual abuse in France according to Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory through speech acts delivered by perpetrators and victims in forensic linguistics based on John Searle's speech act theory. Freud's theory emphasizes the dynamics between id, ego, and superego as well as psychosexual personality in psychological development. In this case, there is a statement that has an important meaning in a person's psychological development. Forensic linguistics utilizes language analysis in a legal context, while Searle's speech act theory classifies utterances into assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative. This research on sexual abuse cases committed by priests in France uses a qualitative descriptive approach to analyze the transcript of the suspect's interrogation through expert psychiatry and the victim's testimony through interviews with French online media journalists uploaded through the RMC Youtube Channel on January 13, 2020. The results show that speech acts in a legal context can significantly affect the psychological state of individuals (suspects and victims). This interdisciplinary approach combines key concepts from psychoanalysis and linguistics that show how language as a communication tool can influence and shape the psychological dynamics of individuals in accordance with the theories of Searle and Freud. This research aims to contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the interaction between linguistic and psychological factors in a forensic context, with practical implications for a more humanistic approach in the justice system. Keywords: Speech Act, Psychology, Forensic Linguistics, Sexual Abuse

Abstract

Abstract. Learning strategies in the Japanese language for young learners tend to be applied to children in Japanese mixed-married families or foreign children in Japan. However, this study tried to apply a learning strategy for a young learner who does not have a background in the Japanese environment or experience with Japanese people and culture. This study aims to describe a learning strategy by applying mnemonics to young learners in Japanese language acquisition, particularly in the Japanese character Hiragana. This research used qualitative descriptive design, with research instruments that include researchers, observation forms, and literature sources. The data collected in this study were analyzed using an interpretive approach. This study used a mnemonics-based digital tool application was used to assist the young learner in learning the Japanese character, Hiragana. This study shows that mnemonics can improve young learners' Hiragana acquisition. Learning strategy by applying mnemonics helps the young learner memorize each character and improves associative skills and Japanese vocabulary as a language acquisition process. Some characters are similar and confusing for beginners, and some Japanese characters do not exist in Indonesian, which makes it difficult for learners to pronounce them. The application greatly helps the subject memorize each character and improves associative skills and Japanese vocabulary as a language acquisition process. Through continuous reading practice, the subject can distinguish almost similar characters and help pronounce vocabulary. This application is very effective for parents who want to introduce Hiragana characters to young learners, with intensive reading practice and creating an environment that uses Hiragana. Keywords: learning strategy, mnemonics, Hiragana, young learner, language acquisition

Abstract

Abstract. Literature became one of the propaganda tools of the Japanese military government during the Japanese occupation of Indonesia (1942-1945). This research focuses the object of study on four short stories and one play written by Japanese writers published in Djawa Baroe magazine (1943-1945), including "Kitjizo Kemedan Perang" by Hino Ashihei, "Ditempat Asoehan Garoeda" by Niwa Fumio, "Batoe" by Kawai Tetsukichi and "Perkawinan 25 Tahoen" by Sasaki Takamaru. The qualitative descriptive method was used to analyze data on each writer's background and the original versions published in Japan to examine the reasons and significance for selecting the five works. The findings show that four writers, Hino Ashihei, Niwa Fumio, Kikuchi Kan, and Sasaki Takamaru, had produced many works and were well-known writers in Japan. Meanwhile, Kawai Tetsukichi was a newcomer writer, but his work "Batoe" was considered new and attracted the editor of Chūōkōron magazine. Furthermore, research on the original versions of the five works published in Japan discovers that all five works were published in Japan between 1938 and 1943 and then republished in Djawa Baroe from January 1, 1944, to March 15, 1944. Some original works are short and almost the same as those published in Djawa Baroe, but some were long novels, so only small parts were published in Djawa Baroe.  However, the versions published in Djawa Baroe contained significant propaganda parts of each work and were suitable for Djawa Baroe's readers during the war. The writer`s reputation and the contents of each work were the main reasons the works were selected for publication in Djawa Baroe.  Keywords: Djawa Baroe, Japanese literature, Japanese Writer, Asia-Pacific War

Abstract

Abstract. There are several issues faced by beginner French learners in learning speaking skills. Students are difficult to learn and pronounce French words correctly. They still read texts to perform monologues as well. Meanwhile, they are required to have speaking skills that focus on general situations in daily life. According to these issues, a different approach is needed to improve their language skills. Therefore, this study discusses the utilization of digital-based mind map in improving French speaking skills. The purpose of this study was to determine how the Xmind application is used to create mind map in the classroom and find out the students' speaking skills after the implementation of it. This study uses a pre-experimental method with quantitative approach and One Group Pretest-Posttest design. The participants in this study were students of the French Language Education at one of the universities in Indonesia. The implementation of the mind mapping method by the Xmind application in speaking skills was carried out by creating a monologue with specified theme. According to the results of data analysis, there was an improvement in students' speaking skills after the implementation of the mind mapping method by the Xmind application. This is indicated by an increase in the average score of speaking skills which in the pre-test was 62.2/100 to 83.9/100 in the post-test. Furthermore, the results of the questionnaire analysis showed that there are many advantages of this method implementation. The majority of participants (85.5%) stated that the mind mapping method helped in enhancing vocabulary for speaking French and in general (76.3%), students stated that implementing the mind mapping method by the Xmind application helped them to improve their memory. Keywords: Mind Mapping; French Speaking Skills; Xmind; Learning Method

Abstract

Abstract. To date, research on critical reading has seldom been conducted on EFL teachers and their teaching practices. This research, therefore, investigated how EFL teachers conceptualized critical reading and how these conceptions were implemented in their instructional practices. Twenty-nine teachers who taught English at secondary schools in the areas of Jakarta, Bogor, Tangerang, Bekasi, and Sukabumi with teaching experience ranging from three to 11 years participated in this research through interviews or open-response questionnaires. The findings revealed six main concepts of critical reading conveyed by EFL teachers. The concepts identified were analysis, evaluation, inference/conclusion, interpretation, criticism, and questioning. Concerning the application of these concepts in the classroom, the majority of instructional practices observed matched the teachers' conceptualization. Only a few classroom activities did not refer to those concepts. The findings indicate that EFL teachers have a clear understanding of critical reading and the ability to implement critical reading instruction in their teaching practices. It would be beneficial for teachers to expand the variety of critical reading activities they employ. Additionally, further studies on critical reading could be conducted in different areas and at different educational levels to ascertain how other EFL practitioners implement critical reading activities in their classrooms so that EFL teachers can get more insights and references. Keywords: conception of critical reading, teaching practices of critical reading, elements of critical reading, EFL school teachers, qualitative research

Abstract

Abstract. Adpositions are an important aspect in Japanese language learning aspect which must mastered since the beginner level. However, despite its importance, many learners struggle to fully comprehend the meaning and semantics of each adposition. This study seeks to contrast of each semantic of the Japanese postpositions 'ni' and 'de' and Indonesian preposition 'di' stated in Japanese dictionary and Indonesian textbook, and suggestions for Japanese language learners from Indonesian for reducing errors in the use of Japanese postpositions 'ni' and 'de' based on I-JAS Corpus data. The descriptive method was utilized, with contrastive analysis serving as the chosen data analysis technique. The implementation procedures were as follows: (1) collecting data from books and dictionaries; (2) analysing the data so that similarities and differences between adpositions in Japanese and Indonesian can be contrasted in terms of semantics; (3) collecting data on errors in the use of Japanese postpositions from Indonesian students in I-JAS corpus data; and (4) analysing the corpus data, namely explaining the reasons and types of errors and proposing suggestions so that Indonesian learners can reduce these errors in their Japanese language learning. The findings revealed that there are 23 semantics of Japanese postposition ‘ni’ and ‘de’ and Indonesian preposition ‘di’, where the Japanese postposition ‘ni’ has 11 semantics, the Japanese postposition ‘de’ has 12 semantics, and the Indonesian preposition ‘di’ has 3 semantics which are the same as the Japanese postpositions ‘ni’ and ‘de’ and becomes the 3 points of the similarities and differences between the postpositions 'ni' and 'de' in Japanese and the preposition 'di' in Indonesian, and there are three types of errors of using Japanese postpositions 'ni' and 'de' based on I-JAS Corpus data; (a) The errors of using Japanese postposition 'ni', (b) The errors of using Japanese postposition 'de', (c) The errors of using Japanese particle or postposition which should be 'ni' or 'de'. The outcomes of this study hold potential as valuable reference material for translators and Japanese instructors involved in teaching Japanese particles or postpositions. By utilizing this resource, the distinctions among these postpositions can be explained more clearly also it offers comprehension for both translators and Japanese language learners in Indonesia. Keywords: Semantic, Contrastive, Corpus, Japanese Postpositions, Indonesian Prepositions

Abstract

Abstract. Research on biographical novels is mostly focused on how novelists represent figures as protagonists, but they have not explored what the contents of the novel would be like if they used the same figure. In addition, there is no research that constructs the characteristics of biographical novels in Indonesia. This study aims to answer the assumption whether biographical novels present different characteristics even though they emanate from the same figure. Through the Buya Hamka’s biographical novel, this study also leads the efforts to delineate the characteristics of the biographical novel in Indonesia. In order to obtain more objective evidence and constructs, readers’ reception is used as an analytical perspective. In addition, netnography is adopted as a research method because the utilized data comes from social networks. Netnography is expected to facilitate more structured reception results. Our results show that biographical novels still present different characteristics even though they use the same figure. The logical assumption related to these differences is that the novel has a fictitious nature and the novelist has a creative way of interpreting figures as protagonists. This proof also conveys that the characteristics of biographical novels are closely related to their figures/protagonists; the figure as the protagonist, the historical content as the context of the event, the protagonist who is inspiring, the events that are attached to the protagonist, and the style of writing as the personal representation of the protagonist. Through these characteristics, it is possible to distinguish between biographical novels and other novels, including historical novels. Keywords: Biographical Novels; Buya Hamka; Reader’s Reception; Indonesian Literature
