Abstract

Psychoanalysis is a theory that is used to analyze the human psyche where the behavior that occurs is due to the mindset that is controlled under the human consciousness. One that can be influenced is the human personality which is described through literary works such as a novel. The purpose of this study is to identify how the personality of the main character depicted in Eat, Pray, Love novel. The researcher uses qualitative methods. The data used in this study are utterances and dialogues. The results of this study indicate that there are three aspects of personality structure found in Eat, Pray, Love novel. The aspects are id (biological aspect) has a role to fulfill the inner satisfaction to get pleasure, ego (rational aspect) plays a role in controlling the inner satisfaction by the id and prioritizes reality, and superego (moral aspect) focuses on morality where it comes from parental teachings and norms that exist in society. These three aspects bridge other to regulate the steps taken by Elizabeth as the main character in the novel.

Abstract

ABSTRAK Karya sastra anak menjadi media yang menghadirkan tokoh-tokoh di dalam cerita sebagai cerminan saat berperilaku. Penelitian ini mengangkat dua rumusan masalah, yaitu bagaimana nilai moral dalam fakta cerita novel Saving Ludo karya Ziggy Zesyazeozeoviennazabrizkie dan bagaimana nilai moral tokoh utama dalam novel Saving Ludo karya Ziggy Zesyazeozeoviennazabrizkie dengan tujuan penelitian yaitu mendeskripsikan fakta cerita dan nilai moral pada novel Saving Ludo karya Ziggy Zesyazeozeoviennazabrizkie. Teori yang digunakan pada penelitian ini ialah kajian sastra anak.Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif dan termasuk ke dalam jenis penelitian kepustakaan. Data penelitian berupa kata, kalimat, dan paragraf yang berbentuk narasi maupun dialog. Sumber data penelitian berasal dari novel Saving Ludo karya Ziggy Zesyazeozeoviennazabrizkie. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan ialah teknik baca, simak, dan catat. Teknik analisis data yang digunakan ialah reduksi data, penyajian data, dan simpulan.Berdasarkan hasil analisis dapat disimpulkan beberapa hal. Pertama, fakta cerita pada novel Saving Ludo karya Ziggy Zesyazeozeoviennazabrizkie terdiri dari tokoh, latar, dan alur. Melalui tokoh yang dihadirkan pengarang di dalam cerita, anak dapat mengambil contoh perilaku yang baik untuk diterapkan di kehidupan sehari-hari yaitu tokoh Theo, Ludo, Marry Ann, Frances dan Suster Edith. Kedua nilai moral yang terdapat pada tokoh-tokoh yang dihadirkan ialah jujur, menjadi diri sendiri, berani bertanggung jawab, kemandirian, keberanian moral, dan kritis.  Kata Kunci: Novel, saving ludo, nilai moral, sastra anak.

Abstract

In literary works, characters undergo significant changes in their life. Some aspects influenced the changes personality of the characters. One of the literary works that showed this situation is a short story by Edgar Allan Poe. The researcher analyzed the main character of each short story from Edgar Allan Poe. They are The Black Cat, The Tell-Tale Heart, and William Wilson. This research aimed to find the characterization and personality development of the main character in Poe’s selected short stories. Hence, the researcher used Kenan’s characterization theory and Hurlock’s personality development. This research used qualitative research design and content analysis study as an approach. The researcher found the characteristics of the main character: sensitive, impulsive, uncontrollable behavior, easily tempered, insane, anxious and stubborn. Those are presented through indirect characterizations: action, external appearance, and environment. From the characterization, the main character in Poe’s selected short stories changed from good to bad, affecting character changes. In the first short story, The Black Cat, the personality development happened because the character “I” was influenced by alcohol. In the second short story, The Tell-Tale Heart, the personality development happened because the “I” character got irritated by the old man’s eye. In the third short story William Wilson, the personality development happened because William was influenced by his environment, which is a significant influence as he got ignored by his family.

Abstract

In a multicultural society, there is a possibility of the appearance minority group and the majority group. The minority group often gets discrimination treatment from the majority group. This research aims to find the portrayal of racial discrimination toward African-American people as a minority that appears in Poor Little Black Fellow short story. This research uses qualitative research design and multiculturalism as an approach. The researcher uses two main theories for this research, they are racial discrimination theory from Blank, et al., and characterization theory from Keenan. In this study, the researcher analyzed Arnold, The Pembertons, and Mappleton Villagers’ characters to see how racial discrimination is portrayed through their characterization. The results of this thesis show that there are several types of racial discrimination portrayed in the story through the characterization of those characters. Those types of discrimination are direct discrimination, subtle and unconscious discrimination, statistical discrimination and profiling, and organizational process. Those portrayals are presented mainly through indirect characterization and some direct characterization. Through the portrayal, it can be seen that racial discrimination can happen directly and indirectly. Keywords: multiculturalism, minority, racial discrimination, characterization, Poor Little Black Fellow

Abstract

ABSTRAKPenelitian ini dilatarbelakangi dengan adanya tanggapan positif dan negatif dari beberapa kepala negara, pakar, dan praktisi yang hadir dalam sidang virtual saat covid-19 mengalami peningkatan tahun 2020. Teori yang digunakan yaitu analisi wacana kohesi gramatikal dan leksikal. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode deskriptif yang termasuk dalam jenis penelitian kepustakaan. Data dalam penelitian ini berupa kata, frasa, klausa, dan kalimat. Teknik analisis data menggunakan metode agih dan padan dengan teknik simak bebas libat cakap dan teknik catat. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pidato banyak mengalami unsur repetisi. Salah satunya terdapat kata ganti “kita” yang menunjuk diri dan seluruh perwakilan negara yang hadir pada sidang tersebut. Repetisi menjadi pengaruh dalam jalannya pidato karena memiliki poin dalam unsur penekanan terhadap pidato yang disampaikan. Analisis wacana kohesi gramatikal dan leksikal pada pidato tersebut sudah padu karena memiliki bentuk penyusunan kata yang sesuai dan isi pidato yang disampaikan sudah kompleks sesuai harapan dan tujuan seluruh kepala negara kedepannya. Tentu isi pidato memiliki korelasi dengan situasi yang terjadi seperti menurunnya perekonomian seluruh negara, terjangkitnya covid-19, masih terjadi konflik seperti Palestina dan Israel. Inilah yang menjadi sebab bahwa pidato tersebut terdapat unsur repetisi karena Presiden hanya menginginkan seluruh warga negara untuk terus bekerja sama dan menjunjung tinggi perdamaian dunia.  Kata kunci : analisis wacana, kohesi gramatikal dan leksikal, pidato Jokowi

Abstract

This research is entitled The Psychopath Traits as Depicted in Emma Grossman’s Character in The Bad Seed 2018 Film. This research purpose is to identify and explain the characterization and psychopath traits portrayed by the main character Emma Grossman in The Bad Seed 2018 Film. The data were analyzed with Psychopath Traits Theory as the main theory by Robert Hare. This research is classified as a qualitative method because the data consist of dialogues and pictures taken from The Bad Seed 2018 Film. The data were generated from film scene, act, and dialogue from film script. The results revealed the characteristics of Emma as the main character who has psychopath traits. The researcher concludes there are twelve psychopath traits of Emma: Superficial charm, a grandiose sense of self-worth, propensity for pathological lying, propensity for manipulation, lack of remorse or guilt, shallow affect, impulsivity, early behavioral problems, poor behavioral control, callousness/lack of empathy, failure to accept responsibility of one’s action, parasitic lifestyle. From the 20 psychopath traits checklist of Robert Hare, Emma has 12 psychopath traits in her character.

Abstract

This study attempts to analyze the portrayal of the Mumbai attacks and the contradiction points in the Hotel Mumbai film. This film is made based on the true events of the Mumbai terrorist attacks in 2008. Related to these huge events, there are a lot of historical books that have covered the Mumbai terrorist attacks. The study aims to find the contradictive representation of the film based on the official history. This research was conducted by using a descriptive method and qualitative approach. In this research, the researcher took data from conversations of characters and the framing of mise-en-scene in the film. This study is conducted by applying a new historicism approach and intrinsic elements of literature, the researcher compares the official history and the film. Through the new historicism approach, the researcher discovers that the Hotel Mumbai film places a lot of differences. First, there is a difference regarding the characters positioning, Arjun’s character in the film is the amalgam of the real story of Karambir Kang and Amit Pashave. Second, there is a difference in the narrative structure of Zahra – Seyfi & Meltem in which Zahra’s character was not killed because she said two sentences of creed. While, as what is told in the historical record, there was a Turkish couple named Seyfi and Maltem Muezzinoglu who were held as hostages and witnessed the murder of another hostage but they were not killed by the terrorist because they prayed in Arabic loudly. Third, there is a very clear difference between the setting of place and time. The report Mumbai terrorist attacks in history happened in six places and lasted for four days, meanwhile, the portrayal in the film happened in three places and lasted for a day. Lastly, this film has picked up the narrative elements to show what has not been known by the public only by reading the official version of history. The goal is to show that a historical-based film can be aimed to gain equal representation of historical narratives from a different point of view.

Abstract

Manusia dalam mengutarakan perasaannya biasanya melakukannya dengan secara langsung dan tidak langsung. Kalimat langsung biasanya tulisan yang dituliskan sama persis dengan apa yang dikatakan penutur, sedangkan kalimat tidak langsung yakni tulisan yang diubah secara bahasa tetapi tentang mengandung makna atau maksud yang sama. Seseorang akan mengungkapkan perasaannya melalui tulisan atau menjadi sebuah karya sastra. Salah satu genre yang sering ditemui ialah puisi. Bahasa figuratif  adalah hal yang tidak bisa dipisahkan dari puisi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan bentuk, makna, dan fungsi bahasa figuratif  pada puisi-puisi Shinta Febriany.Penelitian ini merupakan pendekatan penelitian kualitatif deskriptif. Adapun data penelitian berupa kata, frasa, atau kalimat, serta sumber data penelitian ini adalah himpunan puisi Gambar Kesunyian di Jendela. Teknik pengumpulan data baca, simak, bebas libat catat. Teknik analisis data menggunakan metode pilah unsur penentu.Hasil penelitian ditemukan bahasa figuratif menggunakan kajian stilistika berupa pemajasan, penyiasatan struktur, dan citraan, serta makna bahasa figuratif dan fungsi bahasa figuratif dalam kata, frasa, maupun baris atau kalimat. Analisis dimulai dengan mencari data-data dari 4 puisi yang telah dipilih, data yang teridentifikasi berupa data yang termasuk ke dalam bahasa figuratif, selanjutnya mengklasifikasikan berdasarkan bahasa figuratif, makna, dan fungsi. Bentuk bahasa figuratif digunakan menentukan jenis-jenis yang dominan digunakan penyair, makna bahasa figuratif bertujuan untuk mengetahui makna implisit yang terdapat pada setiap puisi, serta fungsi digunakan untuk membangkitkan nilai estetik dalam himpunan puisi Gambar Kesunyian di Jendela karya Shinta Febriany. Kata Kunci: himpunan puisi, bahasa figuratif, stilistika

Abstract

This research investigated types of word formation process found in J.K. Rowling’s Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them film using Yule’s theory (2010). The methodology was descriptive qualitative research because it focused on words as its data produced in Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them film and the data was explicated descriptively. The analysis revealed that the processes of word-formation of new words in Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them film consist of borrowing, compounding, blending, acronym, and multiple processes. From the findings, it can be implied that borrowing was the most frequent process that occurred in Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them film. The new words found in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them film have the functions as naming beasts, magic spells, and describing person or building.

Abstract

Every language varies and has its own characteristics. The varieties can be seen in terms of age, gender, region, social class, ethnicity, etc. One of the characteristics of a language is its grammatical features. An example of language variety that is affected by ethnic group is African American Vernacular English (AAVE). This research aimed to analyze the grammatical features of AAVE through Oscar’s utterances in Shark Tale film and the variables that influence his AAVE utterances by using Wolfram and Rickford & Rickford’s Theory. Out of four AAVE grammatical features, the researcher found that Oscar produced three of them which are verb phrase, negation, and nominal. Question formation feature is not found in Oscar’s utterances. AAVE grammatical features that appeared in Oscar’s utterances are copula/auxiliary absence, habitual be, double modals, subject-verb-agreement, ain’t, multiple negation, plural noun suffix–s deletion, and y’all. Those grammatical features are influenced by his lower working-class status, his male gender, his young age, and his mood which the AAVE utterances produced whether he was comfortable or uncomfortable with the audiences or with the topic.
