Abstract

Poetry is a literary genre that evolved throughout times, but features a common identity: deviations from linguistics norm to attain aesthetic value. One of such poems is Erwin Clarkson Garrett’s The Dyak Chief. This research aims to identify and analyze the semantic deviations featured in the The Dyak Chief and how the deviants related to the narrative quality of the poem. The objective of this research is to answer two research questions that the researcher addressed: the types of semantic deviations and how they serve the meaning purpose of the poem. The present research is a qualitative study with stylistics approach. Furthermore, the concept of narrative poetry was also elaborated in order to answer on how the deviants serve the meaning of the poem. Based on the conducted research, the poem contains the three main tropes of semantic deviation: semantic oddity (except for paradox), transference of meaning, and honest deceptions (except for litotes). Moreover, these deviations provided revelation, emotional aspect of the main character, and themes of The Dyak Chief. This deviants in turn helped to built the feature of the poem in regards of these three aspects as a narrative poetry. Keywords: stylistics, semantic deviations, The Dyak Chief, poetry, narrative

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the formation of homosexual identity in an individual, the types of victimization and abuse towards queer people, as well as the effects of victimization. The researcher used Foucault’s queer theory as a main theory for this study. The data used in this research were paragraphs, sentences, dialogues and narrations. The novel entitled More Happy Than Not, which was written by Adam Silvera in 2015, was used as the source of data for this research. The results from this study showed that the character Aaron Soto went through a rather difficult progress of homosexual identity formation, which he went back and forth between identity confusion and identity assumption phases. Aaron experienced several kinds of victimization, which include physical abuse, verbal abuse, and victimization in family settings. The abuse caused Aaron to experience physical injury, self blame, as well as feelings of internalized homophobia. The homosexual identity formation, victimization and the effects of victimization are related in a sense that they work like a cycle, and the three of them worked as a cause and effect.

Abstract

This research was concerned with the deconstruction perspective of Colonel Norwood, Bert Lewis, and Coralee Lewis’ characters' meaning in Langston Hughes’ Father and Son short story. The research aimed to describe the characters represented in the story and deconstruct to reveal a new meaning. The researcher used a qualitative research design, and the method used in this research was descriptive. The data in this research were narrations related to the three characters obtained by reading the short story and note-taking the data. The results of this study showed that Colonel Norwood held the binary opposition of superior vs. inferior, bad person vs. good person, powerful vs. powerless, and surrounded vs. lonely, while Bert Lewis and Coralee Lewis held the same binary opposition of inferior vs. superior, good person vs. bad person, but the differences Bert Lewis had the meaning of unloved vs. loved and selfish vs. selfless, while Coralee Lewis held the meaning of ugly vs. beauty. The evidence could be seen by undermining the marginal meaning in the text. Therefore, the text of Father and Son short story displayed the meaning in the text was undecidable because many possibilities by all characters could be replaced by a new meaning.
