Abstract

Pesantrens (Islamic boarding schools) have followed changes in the society and experienced modernization. This is demonstrated by the emergence of pesantrens in Indonesia that are moved to link education based on Islamic values with environmental issues. This research intends to discuss the role of pesantren as religious institutions as well as education in building awareness of the environment. The approach used in this research is qualitative with the phenomenological method. Data in this research were obtained through semi-structured interviews and field observations which were then analyzed through coding. The results of this research show that there is a strong connection between verses in the Koran and environmental conservation. Apart from that, pesantren leader has an important role in formulating the basic values that become the organizational culture. Communication built between pesantren owner, teachers and students is fundamental in socializing organizational values. The process of conveying messages carried out by the Misykat Al-Anwar Pesantren to its students is carried out through several stages, namely anticipatory socialization, encounter socialization, and metamorphosis socialization. These stages also show that the socialization process carried out at the Misykat Al-Anwar Pesantren regarding the integration of Islamic values in building awareness of the environment is highly useful.

Abstract

The fast growth of digital technology in Indonesia, with an estimated 221.6 million internet users (APJII, 2024), has pushed many business sectors to employ digital media to boost competitiveness and market reach. One of the businesses affected is the Kasongan pottery industry, which is noted for producing ceramics of significant cultural and artistic significance. This study will look into the notion of digitalisation management and the influence of digital adaption on ceramic entrepreneurs in Kasongan. This study employs a qualitative method using a case study methodology, which includes observation and in-depth interviews with business players. The study's findings suggest that Kasongan pottery entrepreneurs continue to experience challenges in embracing digital technologies. The key barriers are the delayed regeneration of business actors and poor digital literacy, which results in restricted usage of digital platforms for marketing and company administration. Generational transitions also result in disparities in mindsets and levels of technological adaptability, complicating conventional enterprises' digitalisation processes. The lack of awareness of digital marketing methods also poses a problem to boosting the industry's competitiveness. As a result, the government, universities, and the business community must work together to enhance digital literacy and expedite the adoption of technology in the Kasongan pottery sector in order for it to survive and thrive in the digital age. Abstract

This is a study using interview methods, focus group discussions, and systematic literature reviews. The problem is positioned on the change in the form of communication between women in the past and present. In an environment that supports the form of communication in the passive category, contemporary women today are gradually using the assertive category, especially in the context of romantic interpersonal relationships. Previously, in this category, women were expected to behave passively. In the explanation, muted group theory, patriarchal culture, and emotional intelligence of women will also be touched on to better understand the change in the form of communication in contemporary conditions.

Abstract

This qualitative constructivist research focuses on understanding the group communication patterns that emerged from interaction within distance learning student’s online community. Although distance learning has allowed students to pursue higher education without being bound by time and space constraints, this learning mode also separates students from one another. Communication technology, such as the instant messaging platform WhatsApp, becomes an option for students to replace in-person interaction with virtual interaction. This research uses DeVito’s concept of group communication patterns to analyze the communication between students as a member of an online community on WhatsApp group chat. Based on the online observation data and interviews, this research has found that two group communication patterns emerged from the online community interaction: wheel pattern communication and star pattern communication. The patterns themselves depend on the conversation topic between group members. Wheel pattern typically emerges in a Q&A type of conversation where one member would ask questions and receive responses from multiple group members. Meanwhile, star pattern communication is found only in conversations related to sharing personal experiences as distance learning students.

Abstract

The ogoh-ogoh tradition, which is closely associated with the Nyepi celebration, serves not only as a religious ritual but also as a symbol of tolerance and cultural interaction, particularly in Kampung Bali Bekasi. Although the majority of the residents in this area are not of Balinese descent, they actively participate in the ogoh-ogoh celebration, reflecting a process of acculturation and cultural openness. However, despite media coverage, the dissemination of information about this tradition remains limited and has yet to effectively reach a wider audience, especially the younger generation in the digital era. This study aims to analyze how the ogoh-ogoh tradition in Kampung Bali Bekasi serves as a symbol of tolerance and how digital communication contributes to its preservation. The research employs an ethnophenomenological approach, combining ethnographic communication studies and phenomenology. Data collection is conducted through participatory observation and in-depth interviews with community leaders and individuals involved in the ogoh-ogoh celebration. Documentation in the form of the film Bhuta Kala in Tolerance is also used as research data. The findings reveal that digital communication plays a crucial role in introducing and preserving the ogoh-ogoh tradition. Through platforms such as social media, communities can share cultural experiences and foster a broader cross-cultural understanding. Thus, this tradition not only serves as an educational medium but also strengthens social harmony in a multicultural environment.

Abstract

President Prabowo Subianto officially won presidential election in 2024 and began his administration effectively in October. He had some plans and policies to support national development, including food security and the expansion of palm oil plantation. These sectors are against ecosystem conservation and climate change prevention so that the issue became a controversy among the people. Through his official speech, President Prabowo did not mention environmental issue, whereas he put other sectors as top priorities. Media caught the event and and public paid attention as well. This research aims to analyze the framing on President Prabowo's political communication regarding environmental issue. The analysis was conducted with framing theory of Robert N. Entman including his four main components, define problems, diagnose causes, moral judgement, and treatment recommendation. Two media which were observed by the researcher are Tempo.co and Betahita.id with qualitative approach. Researcher also applied Agenda Setting theory with critical discourse approach to see how media perceive the President in addressing the weakness in governance and lacking of relevant knowledge. Meanwhile, Betahita.id assessed that President Prabowo's narrative on environmental issue is a form of his carelessness towards human rights issues and his partiality with irresponsible corporations.

Abstract

The phenomenon of medical tourism from Indonesia to Penang, Malaysia, has continued to show a significant upward trend in recent years. In today's digital era, social media platforms such as X (formerly Twitter) have become active public discussion arenas, places where netizens share experiences, provide recommendations, and even consider decisions to undergo treatment abroad. This study aims to explore how digital narratives related to the practice of seeking medical treatment in Penang are formed, spread, and negotiated by Indonesians on the X platform. Using a netnography approach, this study analyzes tweets containing keywords related to treatment in Penang, revealing the dynamics of conversations in various discussions in the digital space. The results of the analysis identified four main themes that dominated the conversation: (1) ease of access and convenience of services; (2) exchange of information and recommendations between users; (3) crisis of trust in domestic health services; and (4) considerations of price, quality, and added value offered by services in Penang. These findings indicate that the decision to seek medical treatment abroad is not only influenced by medical needs or individual preferences, but also by social constructions formed in the digital space. Social media plays an important role as an e-WOM (electronic word of mouth) channel that shapes public perception and preferences for cross-country health services. This research is expected to contribute to the development of health communication and digital culture studies, as well as being a basis for thinking about managing information and health service reputation more strategically in the era of social media.

Abstract

Human-crocodile conflict (HCC) is an important yet under-researched aspect of human-wildlife interactions in Indonesia with significant consequences for conservation efforts and public awareness. This study used a quantitative framing method with a content analysis approach based on 168 news articles published by detik.com in 2024 to examine how human-crocodile conflict was portrayed in this one of Indonesia's leading online media. Four variables were analyzed: news source, tone, frame type, and use of thematic versus episodic framing. The findings showed a strong reliance on government sources (79.16%), with insignificant representation of non-governmental perspectives. This resulted in narrow narrative coverage. News coverage was dominated by negative reporting, particularly in government-sourced stories (sentiment score: -0.50), perpetuating fear-based stereotypes about crocodiles. The most common frames were attribution of responsibility (34.0%) and human interest (30.1%), while thematic frames were rare (14.3%), indicating a preference for episodic and event-driven reporting over systemic analysis. These patterns suggest that the media on detik.com often reinforces sensationalism at the expense of balanced conservation messages. The study underscores the need for more inclusive, science-based reporting to foster coexistence and support effective conflict mitigation.
