Abstract

The area of mangrove ecosystems in West Nusa Tenggara Province continues to decline each year. One of the threatening factors that substantially contribute to such condition is socioeconomic activities of human beings in fulfilling their needs. An effort that can be made primarily to preserve the mangrove ecosystem is to quantify the economic value of environmental services provided by the mangrove ecosystem as a whole, so that the existence and sustainability of the mangrove ecosystem could be maintained. This research aims to calculate the total economic value of mangrove ecosystem services which indicate the four categories of ecosystem services including supporting services, provisioning services, regulatory services and cultural services. The research was carried out using a survey method by collecting data and information from location of this study to obtain actual data regarding the existence of the mangrove ecosystem. The results of the analysis show that the total economic value of mangrove ecosystem environmental services is 963,888,060/year. This value is divided into provider services (supply services) amounting to Rp. 153,002,250, regulatory services (arrangement services) Rp. 598,339,702, supporting services (support services) Rp. 2,243,250, and cultural services (cultural services) Rp. 210,308,857. The magnitude of the total economic value of mangrove ecosystem environmental services can be a reference for the government in determining compensation for services if there is degradation to mangrove ecosystem resources in the area.

Abstract

The addition of calcium, phosphorus and magnesium minerals has been carried out separately in vannamei shrimp cultivation activities using fresh water media. Furthermore, the combination of the three types of potassium is expected to mutually fulfill the mineral needs of vannamei shrimp so that their growth becomes more optimal. This research aims to analyze the growth of vannamei shrimp reared in various media with different mineral levels. The treatments in this study were P1 (30 ppt), P2 (20 ppt), P3 (10 ppt), P4 (0 ppt without the addition of minerals), and P5 (0 ppt with the addition of various types of mineral sources). The research results show that the best SGR weight is found in P1 at 12.42%/day. The highest SR value was also obtained at P1, namely 65%. The SR and SGR values at P5 are higher than at P4, but still lower than at P1, P2, and P3. Based on these results, it is known that the growth of vannamei shrimp reared in fresh water media with added minerals has increased compared to vannamei shrimp reared in fresh water media without added minerals, but is still lower compared to the growth of vannamei shrimp reared in water media. sea. Furthermore, research is needed on adding other types of minerals to low salinity vannamei shrimp cultivation media.

Abstract

One of the leading causes of declining water quality is contamination from human activities. The Sekadau River serves as a primary water source for the residents of Sekadau Regency, facilitating bathing, laundry, kitchen equipment cleaning, and freshwater fish cultivation. The objective of this study is to evaluate the water quality of the Sekadau River, comparing it against Class II standards as stipulated in Government Regulation No. 22 of 2021 on Environmental Protection and Management. Subsequently, pollution levels in the Sekadau River at the measurement point were determined using the Pollution Index Method (PIM). The research findings reveal that the pollution index values for 2018, 2022, and 2023 fall within the lightly polluted category. Conversely, in 2019, the water quality of the Sekadau River exhibited improvement. It complied with water quality standards per the Minister of Environment and Forestry Decree No. 115 on Quality Status Determination Guidelines. Consequently, the Sekadau River remains suitable for bathing, laundry, freshwater fish cultivation, and other purposes requiring water of the same quality as its designated use. However, considering the increasing pollution trends in 2022 and 2023, appropriate measures are necessary to prevent the Sekadau River from becoming more polluted.

Abstract

Dendrobium mussaense, an orchid species of high ornamental value, was subjected to experimental treatments involving the addition of combinations of auxin and cytokinin, namely 2,4-D (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid) with BAP (6-benzylaminopurine) and 2,4-D with TDZ (thidiazuron). The research aim was to evaluate their effects on the emergence time of shoots and roots. The method used an experiment design with seven treatments. Among the treatments, the most effective was 2,4-D at a concentration of 1 mg/L combined with 0.75 mg/L of BAP. This treatment resulted in the shortest time for both shoot and root emergence. These findings underscore the importance of optimizing hormone combinations for efficient shoot and root induction in D. mussaense, providing valuable insights for orchid propagation and cultivation practices.

Abstract

Palopo City is one of the peanut production centres in South Sulawesi. However, from 2008 to 2020, groundnut production in Palopo City has decreased. Recently, in South Sulawesi, it was reported that peanut stripe virus infection has spread widely and evenly in peanut plants. Symptoms of stripe disease include dark green and light green leaf colour, chlorosis, and can cause stunting. This study aims to determine the estimation of yield loss caused by stripe disease in peanut plants in Polopo City, South Sulawesi. This research was conducted in a farmer-owned groundnut field located in Purangi Village, Sendana Subdistrict, Palopo City, South Sulawesi, from January to May 2023. Parameters observed were plant height, disease severity and incidence, and yield loss. Observations were made 6 times on plants aged 4 to 9 weeks after planting. The results showed that the symptoms of striped disease showed that the growth of peanut plant height was inhibited, and caused a decrease in the number of pods, pod weight, and pod number. Disease severity increased to 57.2% and disease incidence to 46.6%. Yield loss caused by stripe symptoms in peanut plants was 43.78%, indicating that high disease severity and incidence can reduce yield.

Abstract

Singgalang Cabbage is one of the local cabbage cultivated on the foothills of Mount Singgalang, West Sumatra. Recently, the existence of this cabbage has decreased, so conservation and preservation efforts need to be carried out. This research was conducted to develop method for in vitro propagation and preservation of singgalang cabbage. The Murashige and Skoog (MS) were used as basal media with two experimental stages, i.e., shoot initiation with 6-Benzylaminopurine (BAP), and root induction and plantlet preservation with modification of MS media. The nodal and shoots were used as explants. The results showed that increment of BAP concentrations gave a significant effect on shoot initiation after 60 days of treatment. MS media-enriched with BAP 2 mg/L gave significant increment of shoots (4 shoots/nodus) and leaves (11.67) numbers when compared to other treatments. For root induction and plantlet preservation, it was found that the earlier of root formation was observed in modification of MS media at ½ and ¼ strength. Meanwhile, MS media at ⅛ strength was observed to be better media for plant height increment (4.75 cm) when compared to other treatments. It was found that the plantlets survived and grew well after 120 days under in vitro condition.

Abstract

Sargassum sp. is a type of brown algae found in Indonesian marine waters with great potential in the food and pharmaceutical industries. There is antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential in Sargassum sp. extract so that it makes this type utilised as a lotion preparation. It is necessary to know the potential of Sargassum sp. extract in making lotions. This research uses extraction method to produce Sargassum sp. extract with organic solvent extraction technique, namely alcohol. In addition, the emulsion method was used in the manufacture of lotion preparations. Furthermore, secondary metabolites and anti-inflammatory (irritation) tests were conducted. In addition, the lotion preparation can be evaluated by conducting organoleptic, pH, and homogeneity tests.  The results showed that the Sargassum sp. extract contained significant antioxidant compounds, as indicated by a decrease in DPPH absorbance. Sargassum extract contains alkaloid, flavonoid, saponin, and tannin. In addition, lotion preparations containing Sargassum sp. extract also showed a significant decrease in pro-inflammatory cytokine expression in skin cells exposed to UVB radiation. In addition, the irritation test showed negative results with a safety level without causing irritation to the skin. These findings indicate the potential of Sargassum sp. extract in producing lotion preparations with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects that can contribute to skin protection from oxidative damage and inflammation.
