Abstract

This article aims to discuss delves into the phenomenon of Sikambang pantun as a cultural heritage of coastal communities. This research aims to explore the characteristics, typology, and socio-cultural functions of Sikambang pantun within the context of life in Barus, Tapanuli Tengah, and Sibolga. By employing a historical research approach with systematic methodological stages comprising heuristic (source collection), source criticism, interpretation, and explanation this study identifies and analyzes various types of Sikambang pantun. The examined typology includes love pantun, advisory pantun, religious pantun, and other variations reflecting the richness of local cultural expression. Sikambang is far more than a traditional literary work; it serves as a significant medium of cultural communication within coastal societies. It functions as a channel for conveying life messages, a vessel for preserving traditional proverbs, a medium for documenting community narratives, an instrument of social communication, and a reflection of the lives and cultural identities of coastal communities. Its existence transcends mere poetic aesthetics, acting instead as a bridge connecting generations, transmitting noble values, and preserving local wisdom. This research provides meaningful academic contributions to understanding local cultural dynamics, particularly the literary expression of Sikambang pantun in the coastal regions of Barus, Tapanuli Tengah, and Sibolga. Through in-depth analysis, this study reveals the complexity and profound meanings embedded in each pantun, demonstrating that traditional literary art is not merely a relic of the past but a living document that continues to evolve and hold relevance.

Abstract

This study examines the impact of parental involvement on character development in students at SDN 1 Basungkai. The aim of this research is to understand the contribution of parental involvement in fostering discipline, responsibility, and moral values among students, while also addressing the lack of research on the structural role of parents in character education. A qualitative descriptive approach was used, with data collection through interviews and observations to explore the interactions between parents, teachers, and students. The findings indicate that parental involvement has a positive influence on students' character development. However, informal forms of involvement, such as brief visits to the school and casual discussions with teachers, have limited long-term effects. Barriers such as work commitments and complex family situations also restrict the consistency of parental involvement. Nevertheless, this study highlights that structured collaboration between parents and schools through regular communication can enhance the effectiveness of character formation in children. The limitation of this study lies in its qualitative data from a single school, which affects the generalizability of the results. Future research is recommended to incorporate quantitative analysis in various school settings to strengthen and broaden these findings

Abstract

The Sembahyang Datuk Darah Putih ritual is a significant practice among the Tionghoa ethnic community in Medan Kesawan, reflecting a unique syncretism between Chinese religious beliefs and local Malay spiritual traditions. This study aims to explore the historical and cultural significance of this ritual, the religious syncretism involved, and the factors contributing to its preservation. Employing a qualitative research method with an ethnographic approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and document analysis. The findings reveal that the veneration of Datuk Darah Putih is rooted in the historical interactions between Chinese immigrants and local Malay communities, symbolizing respect, gratitude, and a form of spiritual protection. The ritual has evolved over generations, adapting to contemporary socio-cultural changes while maintaining its core religious essence. The study also identifies challenges in sustaining the tradition, including modernization and diminishing interest among younger generations. The research concludes that Sembahyang Datuk Darah Putih serves as a cultural bridge between the Tionghoa and Malay communities, reinforcing interethnic harmony and religious tolerance. Further studies are recommended to examine the broader impact of such syncretic practices on multicultural societies.
