The research aimed to design teaching materials incorporating elements of Malay culture into comics to enhance students’ reading interest. A Research and Development approach was applied using the 4-D model. The study was conducted at the Japanese Language Education Study Program, FKIP, Universitas Riau, from June to October 2022. Three validators assessed the learning media prototype through questionnaires. Data were collected via surveys and observations. Quantitative descriptive analysis was used to determine the validation scores. The results showed that the comic text display achieved an average score of 81.22% (appropriate category), image display scored 85.37%, and the role of comics as learning material scored 80.53% (good category). Student responses to the comics scored 95.36% (good category). Overall, the comics were found to have good validity as teaching materials.

Abstract

Teachers often face challenges when introducing new concepts that students are unfamiliar with, and students are rarely accustomed to connecting prior knowledge to construct new concepts. These teacher-related barriers and student difficulties contribute to low conceptual understanding. To address this, innovative learning strategies such as the application of PhET simulations combined with problem-solving models can be implemented. This research was conducted at SMPN 1 Kateman to examine the effect of PhET simulation integrated with a problem-solving model on students’ conceptual understanding. The study employed an experimental design with a quasi-experimental, nonequivalent posttest-only control group. Data were collected using a conceptual understanding test consisting of 33 reasoned multiple-choice questions and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results indicated that students in the experimental class outperformed those in the control class, demonstrating a significant improvement in conceptual understanding through the PhET simulation with a problem-solving model.

This article investigates the low learning outcomes in Economics for the XI IPS class of SMA Negeri 1 Ujungbatu during limited face-to-face learning. The research employed a quantitative descriptive method to examine the effect of online courses on students’ learning achievement. The population consisted of 30 students who participated in online learning through Ruangguru. Data were collected using questionnaires for online course usage and documentation for students’ Economics scores in the odd semester of the 2021/2022 academic year. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics and simple linear regression through SPSS, following classical assumption tests. The results indicate that online courses have a positive and significant effect on students’ learning achievement, with a regression coefficient of 0.428 and a contribution of 20.8%. These findings suggest that online courses can serve as an effective alternative to enhance students’ learning outcomes during limited face-to-face learning.

Abstract

This article discusses the effect of parents’ parenting style on the students’ learning motivation at the fifth-grade level of SD Negeri 040536 Partibi Lama. The method used in the study was a survey with a quantitative research method. The sample in the study involved 22 students from class VA and 21 students from class VB. The data collection tool used to see the students' learning motivation was a questionnaire that has been tested for validation and reliability. Both classes were normally distributed because those showed 0.200 ≥ 0.05. Based on the correlation test, the calculation result was 0.667, which meant that the correlation value was strong. The significant test was carried out to test the hypothesis by comparing the value of tcount with ttable. The value of tcount was 5,726 while ttable was 2,020. Because tcount 5,726 ≥ ttable 2,020, thus Ha was accepted and H0 was rejected. Through the t-test, it could be concluded that there was a significant relationship between parents’ parenting style and students’ learning motivation at the fifth-grade level of SDN 040536 Partibi Lama Merek in Karo.

Abstract

This article examines students’ perceptions of using WhatsApp for learning English at SMP Islam As-Shofa and investigates differences between male and female students’ perceptions. The study employed a quantitative descriptive design involving 30 ninth-grade students from two classes. Data were collected through online questionnaires distributed via a WhatsApp group. Students’ responses were analyzed using a Likert scale to measure perceptions of WhatsApp as a learning tool. The results indicate that WhatsApp is fairly feasible for learning English, with 40% of students expressing a positive perception. Regarding gender differences, 24.4% of male students and 21% of female students reported positive perceptions. Conversely, 45.2% of students expressed negative perceptions, with 23.8% of males and 22.4% of females disagreeing. These findings suggest that while WhatsApp can support English learning, students’ perceptions vary, highlighting the need for strategies to enhance engagement and effectiveness in online learning environments.
