The sample in the study involved 52 parents who have children aged 5-6 years at Lundar Panti in Pasaman of West Sumatra Province. The data collection technique was used through a questionnaire for the parents. Research analysis used the correlation test of Pearson product-moment assisted by IMB SPSS version 23. In conducting the study, the variable of verbal violence was categorized as high with the range of 66%-79%. Whilst the variable of self-esteem for children aged 5-6 years at Lundar Panti in West Sumatra Province was categorized as low with the range of 40%-55%. Based on the results, the Pearson product-moment value was 0.405 with a probability of 0.003. The correlation coefficient value was 0.405 in the range of 0.40-0.599, which meant that there was a relationship that was categorized as moderate between verbal violence and self-esteem directed to negative because the r-value was negative, which meant that the higher verbal violence was, the higher rvalue was, the lower children’s self-esteem was.

Abstract

COVID-19 has spread all over the world and made all human activities limited. Social distance has been applied as a precaution against virus contagion and also applied in the learning activities. Online learning is applied as a learning method during the pandemic, but there are some obstacles occurred like a low ability to supervise and observe students’ progress when teachers conveyed character building for students. The research in this article is to analyze teachers’ strategies to apply character building through online learning methods and analyze teachers’ outcomes measurement to evaluate students’ character improvement. The research used a descriptive qualitative method with a study case design. The result showed that teachers’ strategies to apply character building through online learning methods are (1) using virtual communication media, (2) giving good examples or becoming a good role model for students, (3) doing intensive training and adaptation, and (4) maximizing the synergy between parents and teachers. Teachers’ outcome measurement to evaluate students’ character improvement could be seen from (1) the observation by the learning subject teachers and homeroom teachers and (2) students’ kindness reports from school counsellors and the school rules department. A recommendation for the next researcher is about the improvement of students’ character after implementing online learning at schools.

Abstract

This article discusses the students’ mathematics learning outcomes by using the Realistic Mathematics Education learning model for the fifth-grade students of SD Kartika 1-2 Medan and describes the obstacles faced by using the Realistic Mathematics Education learning model to improve students’ mathematics learning outcomes. The results indicated that there was an improvement of the fifth-grade students’ learning outcomes on Mathematics learning subjects at SD Kartika 1-2 Medan. It was proven from the research outcomes conducted on the pretest, students who achieved a maximum score were 5 students or 21.73%, while students who did not complete were 18 students or 78.27%. After the research was continued in the first cycle, students who achieved a complete score were 14 students or 60.86%, while students who did not complete were 9 students or 39.14%. Related to this, there was an improvement in the first cycle compared to the pre-test. Nevertheless, it did not qualify predetermined completeness category. Hence, it was continued to the second cycle, students who achieved a complete score were 20 students or 86.95%, while students who did not complete were 3 students or 13.05%. Thus, there was an improvement in cycle II compared to cycle I and had qualified the predetermined completeness. The research results after applying flipbook media to the second-grade students of SDN Sayang were five students’ learning interests and their reading activities improvement. An improvement of reading interest was indicated by the improvement in happy attitude and the number of reading texts. A happy attitude was seen when reading and after the reading process, and the number of reading texts also increased. The improvement in reading activity was indicated by the length, the number of books, and the understanding of the reading text content. The improvement in reading activity was indicated by an improvement in the duration of reading time, the additional books to read, and the understanding of the reading text contents. In conclusion, students’ reading interest and activity could be increased by using flipbook media at least for five lessons. With the five lessons, there was an improvement in students’ interest and consistent reading activities. Abstract

This article examines the obstacles that occur to students’ writing essay descriptions in which the type of students’ writing is almost the same, does not use spaces, the lettering is still not appropriate with PUEBI, punctuation marks are not quite right, and the students are still difficult to write the appropriate initial word and determine the flow of writing in sequence. Based on the previous research, the picture and picture model was a solution that could be used. The research purpose was to find out the description of the use of picture and picture models in writing descriptive essays. The research method used was a Systematic Literature Review. The research was conducted by collecting data in the form of journals regarding the application of picture and picture models to improve the students’ writing skills of descriptive essays on Indonesian learning subjects in elementary school. The research used 14 journals with criteria for the last 10 years of journal publication in 2012–2013 through a picture and picture model with independent variables used to write descriptive essays on Indonesian learning subjects for elementary school students. The game that could be used in the application of the picture and picture model was "who is fast he can", this game made students easier to understand what was intended by the teachers when teaching the learning material and students are quick to grasp the presented material because it was accompanied by the pictures.
