Abstract

The presence of Native English Speaker Teachers (NESTs) in a number of English courses, formal schools and universities has sparked debates among Non-Native English Speaker Teachers (NNSTs) in Indonesia. Some practitioners believe that the involvement of NESTs in education institutions brings about more benefits to their students and institutions than solely hiring NNESTs. However, some others believe that NNESTs are not less superior to their NEST counterparts. This study evaluated these beliefs by looking at the concerns about NNESTs compared to NESTs in the context of Indonesia. The data in this study were obtained from a number of related literatures. Supporting data were obtained through participant observation during the authors’ training in education institutions that involved NESTs and by finding out the views of a university chairman who earned his masters and doctorate degrees in an English Speaking country. Besides, data were collected through an interview with three Australian university graduates who were taught by NNESTs in their secondary (junior and senior high schools) education and trained by NESTs prior to their departure to Australia for pursuing their masters degrees. In the final part, the results of this research indicate that NNESTs still deserve to have the same opportunity as NESTs. The findings, however, also suggest that the contexts in which NESTs and NNESTs are most effective differ.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate semantic meanings which include lexical relations and meaning properties in Papuan Indonesian dialect. It used natural data obtained in conversations among 6 Papuan students who studied at Khairun University. These participants were selected purposively considering the variety of their ethnicities and their membership in Papuan students’ community. The data were collected in three steps: interview, observation, and documentation. The data were then analysed qualitatively to elicit the dominant semantic meanings in the utterances. There are two lexical relations identified: synonymy and polysemy. The synonyms in the Papuan Indonesian dialect are influenced by the intensity of use in society, taken from other language terms, and the description of the meaning of the word. For meaning properties, two types are found: ambiguity and redundancy. The Papuan Indonesian dialect contains a lot of redundancy, that is, the use of particle language in terms of semantics does not make a difference in meaning. This study also found that based on its semantic relations, Papuan Indonesian dialect is also influenced by several factors, namely: (1) administrative unity; (2) similarity in geographical area; (3) special community identity; and (4) historical experience.

Abstract

Part of the substance of an utterance could be represented by gestures. There are many different perspectives on how gestures, words, and cognition relate to one another and how they could influence communication. Gestures are inferior to words because they communicate no semantic information beyond the linguistic utterances that accompany them. The current study aims to find the main gestural strategies, used by the interlocutors in English political TV Interviews that represent speech acts. It is based on the hypothesis that there are different strategies of gestures used by interlocutors in political TV interviews that represent speech acts. The selected interviews have been analyzed in the light of an eclectic model based on model Kulkarni (2013) and Searle (1979). The first is used for analyzing the main kinds of body movements and types of gesticulation, and the latter for analyzing Searle's classification of speech acts since it is a pragmatic study. The results of the selected interviews have shown that gestural strategies are highly related to the context of situation. Each gesture performs a specific speech act. The interlocutors use gestural strategies to express a wide range of emotions, attitudes, approval, anxiety, disagreement, and affection. The participants in these interviews are equally conscious of their body language and verbal exchanges.
