Abstract

Writing is a crucial skill in English language learning that requires the integration of linguistic, cognitive, and organizational components, making it one of the most challenging areas for many EFL students. This study aims to analyze the writing difficulties encountered by third-semester English major students in producing descriptive texts and to identify the linguistic aspects contributing to these challenges. Employing a qualitative descriptive research design, data were collected from students’ written descriptive texts and questionnaire responses. Students were asked to compose a descriptive text based on a given topic, while the questionnaire explored their perceptions of writing difficulties. The findings reveal four dominant categories of difficulties: grammatical problems, limited vocabulary, weak text organization, and challenges in developing ideas. Grammar emerged as the most problematic aspect, with frequent errors in tenses, subject–verb agreement, and articles. Vocabulary limitations led to repetitive and inaccurate word choices, while organizational issues appeared in unclear generic structure, weak coherence, and minimal use of cohesive devices. Students also struggled to elaborate ideas, resulting in brief and underdeveloped descriptions. The questionnaire results supported the text analysis, indicating that grammar, vocabulary, idea generation, and organization were perceived as their main challenges. Overall, the study concludes that the writing difficulties experienced by students are influenced by linguistic limitations and insufficient understanding of genre conventions. These findings emphasize the need for integrated and process-oriented writing instruction focusing on grammatical accuracy, vocabulary enrichment, genre awareness, and pre-writing strategies to support students in improving their descriptive writing performance.

Abstract

The cultivation of Pancasila values in the era of globalization faces significant challenges, including moral shifts and the fading of national identity among the younger generation. This study aims to explore the effectiveness of integrating local wisdom into Pancasila and Civic Education (PPKN) as a means of internalizing the nation's ideological values. Using a literature review method analyzing academic sources published between 2021 and 2025, this research examines various contextual approaches that bridge regional traditions with the principles of Pancasila. The findings indicate that local wisdom—encompassing customary laws, oral traditions, and local philosophies—functions as a living laboratory that renders civic education materials more relevant and accessible to students. This integration is proven to enhance the affective domain of learners, particularly in strengthening attitudes of tolerance, mutual cooperation (gotong royong), and patriotism. Furthermore, the use of culture-based learning media and digital technology to document regional values provides an innovative dimension to character education. The study concludes that the synergy between national curriculum standards and regional socio-cultural richness is crucial for developing citizens who are deeply rooted in their cultural identity yet remain open-minded.

Abstract

Teacher literacy plays an important role in the development of instructional materials, particularly at the elementary school level where teachers are expected to design contextual and meaningful learning resources. However, studies on teacher literacy in schools with limited learning resources remain limited. This study aims to describe the literacy practices of elementary school teachers in developing Indonesian language teaching materials and to identify the supporting and inhibiting factors influencing these practices. This research employed a qualitative approach using a descriptive case study design. The participants consisted of four elementary school teachers in Humene Satua Village, Gunungsitoli, who were selected purposively. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and classroom observations and analyzed using data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that teachers have an adequate awareness of literacy, but the implementation of reading literacy, information literacy, digital literacy, and pedagogical literacy is still not optimal. Teachers tend to rely on textbooks, use internet resources selectively, and utilize digital technology at a basic level. Supporting factors include teachers’ intrinsic motivation and principal support, while inhibiting factors include limited learning resources, minimal digital literacy training, and high administrative workload. Strengthening teacher literacy through improved access to learning resources and continuous professional development is essential to enhance the quality of instructional materials and learning in elementary schools.
