Abstract

This study develops a Wordwall-based learning media with a Maze Runner theme for the Natural and Social Sciences (IPAS) subject, in which students answer questions through a maze containing answer choices; correct answers unlock the route to the next question, while incorrect answers close the route. Validation results indicate a media feasibility score of 96% and a content feasibility score of 85%, both categorized as highly feasible. A limited field trial conducted with 6 fourth-grade students at SDN Susukan 08 Pagi yielded a response percentage of 79.5% (feasible), while a broader field trial involving 12 students obtained a percentage of 83.1% (highly feasible), with recommendations for improvement regarding the maze display, visual effects, and answer distractors. This media is deemed suitable for use as an interactive learning alternative in IPAS instruction.

Abstract

This study aimed to explore the challenges faced by English teachers in teaching reading skills to Grade VIII students at SMPN 14 Kaur. Specifically, it identified the strategies used by the teacher, the challenges encountered during the implementation of those strategies, and the solutions applied to overcome them. This study employed a qualitative case study design. The participants consisted of one English teacher and eight Grade VIII students. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, questionnaires, open-ended questions, and documentation. The data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Data triangulation was used to ensure the trustworthiness of the findings. The findings showed that the teacher used reading aloud, question-and-answer sessions, vocabulary explanation, translation, and rewards to develop students' reading skills. The main challenges were students' limited vocabulary, low interest in reading, pronunciation difficulties, limited instructional time, and different reading abilities. To overcome these challenges, the teacher simplified the learning materials, explained vocabulary before reading activities, encouraged students to use dictionaries, provided additional guidance, and motivated students through praise and rewards. The study concluded that appropriate teaching strategies and continuous support are important for improving students' reading skills.

Abstract

Teacher creativity in classroom management is considered an essential factor in creating meaningful learning experiences and improving students' understanding of learning materials. However, classroom instruction in elementary schools is often still teacher-centered, resulting in limited student engagement and suboptimal learning outcomes. This study aimed to examine the relationship between teacher creativity in classroom management and students' understanding of learning materials among third-grade students at UPTD SDI Kuanino 2. The study employed a quantitative approach using a correlational research design. The population consisted of 21 third-grade students, all of whom were selected as the research sample through total sampling. Data were collected using Likert-scale questionnaires measuring teacher creativity in classroom management and students' understanding of learning materials. The research instruments were tested for validity and reliability before data collection. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, the Shapiro–Wilk normality test, and Spearman Rank correlation analysis because the data were not normally distributed. Descriptive analysis indicated that teacher creativity in classroom management was in the good category (77.56%), while students' understanding of learning materials was also categorized as good (76.25%). The findings revealed a positive and significant relationship between teacher creativity in classroom management and students' understanding of learning materials. These findings indicate that improving teacher creativity in managing classroom learning contributes to better student understanding. Therefore, teachers are encouraged to continuously develop innovative classroom management strategies to enhance learning quality in elementary schools.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the content of moral material in the Hadith of Arba'in An-Nawawi and analyze its implementation in the formation of character values of students at Syekh Abdurrahman Rabah Pademawu Pamekasan Middle School. The focus of the study is directed at strengthening three main character values, namely religious, discipline, and respect (takzim). The study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive research type. Data were obtained through observation, in-depth interviews with the principal, Islamic Religious Education teachers, and students, as well as documentation studies of learning tools. Furthermore, the data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model which includes data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The validity of the data is guaranteed through the application of source triangulation and technical triangulation. The results of the study indicate that the Hadith of Arba'in An-Nawawi contains moral values that cover three main aspects, namely morality towards Allah SWT, morality towards oneself, and morality towards fellow human beings. The implementation of this material is carried out through routine study and memorization of hadith, the instilling of Islamic behavior in daily life at school, and the role model provided by teachers and the principal. Through this process, students demonstrate the development of religious character, discipline, and respect (takzim), which are reflected in their behavior during learning activities and at school. Successful implementation is supported by the school's commitment, teacher competence, a religious learning environment, and parental involvement in character development. Challenges encountered include limited learning time, the influence of digital media use, and suboptimal character building within the family environment. Based on the research results, it can be concluded that the implementation of the moral material in the Hadith of Arba'in An-Nawawi plays a crucial role in shaping students' character through a continuous process of learning, habituation, and role modeling within the school environment.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze teacher strategies in developing first-grade students' number comprehension skills at SDN Rawamangun 09 Jakarta. This study used a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation studies with first-grade teachers, the vice principal, and students. Data analysis was carried out through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing, and was strengthened through triangulation of sources and techniques to ensure data credibility. The results of the study indicate that teachers implemented three complementary strategies in developing students' number comprehension skills, namely (1) the use of concrete teaching aids (manipulatives) through the Concrete-Representational-Abstract (CRA) approach, (2) number discussions realized through the provision of scaffolding, and (3) play-based learning (learning while playing). The research findings indicate that the use of concrete teaching aids is the most prominent strategy in learning practices because it is in accordance with the concrete operational cognitive development stage of first-grade students. These three strategies begin with strategic planning that considers student abilities, is adapted to the diversity of student abilities, and is supported by collaboration between teachers and parents. This study also identified several inhibiting factors, including heterogeneity in student abilities, limited time, and concentration. This research implies that developing number understanding in early elementary school students requires the integration of concrete, experiential learning, dialogic interactions through scaffolding, and the support of a learning ecosystem that continuously engages the school.

Abstract

The semantic and pragmatic difficulties Indonesian English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners encounter are examined in this study. Even though a large number of Indonesian EFL students exhibit sufficient grammatical proficiency, they frequently struggle to comprehend contextual meanings and use language correctly in social situations. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study is to identify significant factors and investigate the semantic and pragmatic difficulties encountered by 20 Indonesian high school EFL students. Semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis of students' oral and written tasks were used to gather data, which was then subjected to thematic analysis. The study's findings show that while students possess sufficient grammatical knowledge, they struggle greatly to comprehend language in everyday communication situations. Lexical ambiguity, taking figurative language literally, and doubt regarding the meaning of words in context are the main semantic problems identified. In the meanwhile, pragmatic issues include misinterpreting deixis, misusing politeness techniques, and having trouble comprehending indirect intent in speech acts. The primary causes of these difficulties include first language interference, cultural norm variations, and a lack of exposure to real English interactions. The significance of explicitly combining semantic and pragmatic competences in English language learning is concluded by this study.

Abstract

Meaning construction in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms extends beyond understanding the literal meanings of words. It involves secondary school learners' ability to integrate semantic knowledge with pragmatic interpretation while responding appropriately to contextual, interpersonal, and sociocultural cues. This study investigates how Indonesian secondary school EFL learners construct meaning during classroom interaction by examining the interplay among teacher talk, semantic competence, pragmatic competence, Self-Perceived Communication Competence (SPCC), and Willingness to Communicate (WTC). Employing a qualitative case study design at a secondary school in Makassar, data were collected from English teachers and secondary school students through classroom observations, audio-video recordings, semi-structured interviews, and field notes. Classroom discourse was analyzed using Martin and White's Appraisal Theory, while interview data were analyzed thematically following Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña's interactive model. Findings indicate that positive teacher talk contributes to a psychologically supportive classroom environment that enhances learners' communication confidence and encourages active participation in meaning negotiation. Semantic competence alone is insufficient; learners' pragmatic competence and contextual awareness play essential roles in interpreting implied meanings and indirect speech acts. Secondary school learners with stronger SPCC demonstrate higher WTC and more effective meaning negotiation. Meaning construction is thus a multidimensional process emerging from the interaction among linguistic competence, classroom discourse, and learners' psychological readiness.

Abstract

The massive development of digital technology has shifted the existence of traditional games and triggered character degradation in children, such as individualism and reduced empathy. This study aims to describe the revitalization process of the traditional game Kasede-Kasede as a medium for strengthening local wisdom-based character education for students at SD Negeri 1 Bungi. The research method used was descriptive qualitative. The research subjects included the principal, teachers, and fourth and fifth grade students. Data collection was conducted through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data analysis used the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results show that the revitalization of the Kasede-Kasede game was carried out through three stages: reconstruction of the game rules, integration into co-curricular/extracurricular activities, and routine practice. The character values successfully strengthened through this game include cooperation (gotong royong), honesty (integrity), discipline, emergency response (empathy), and sportsmanship. The success of this implementation was supported by student enthusiasm and school commitment, despite the challenge of limited suitable play space. This study concludes that the Kasede-Kasede game is an effective contextual educational tool for developing superior character in elementary school students.
