Abstract

Social media has become an integrated part of university students' daily lives, influencing their mental and emotional well-being as well as their academic activities. On one hand, social media use facilitates communication, expands social networks, and supports learning activities. On the other hand, it could also lead to negative outcomes such as distraction, decreased academic performance, and increased social pressure. Therefore, it is important to understand the role of Social Media Use in university student’s Digital Well-Being. This study employed a quantitative correlational design using a convenience sampling technique involving 488 university students who uses social media. Social Media Use was measured using the Social Media Use Integration Scale (SMUIS) developed by Jenkins-Guarnieri et al. (2013), while Digital Well-Being was measured using the Digital Well-Being Scale developed by Mathew et al. (2023). The results revealed that Social Media Use plays a significantly positive role in student’s Digital Well-Being (R = 0.437, p < .001). Regression analysis showed a coefficient of determination of R² = 0.191, indicating that Social Media Use accounts for 19.1% of the variance in student's Digital Well-Being. These findings suggest that higher levels of Social Media Use are associated with higher levels of Digital Well-Being among university students.

Abstract

Taboo language is a linguistic phenomenon reflecting the close relationship between language, culture, and social norms within a society. This study aims to describe the forms and classifications of taboo language and to explain the social contexts of its use among the Gayo people in Central Aceh Regency. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed. Data were gathered through listening, participatory observation, recording, and note-taking involving three native Gayo speakers from the Kute Panang, Ketol, and Kebayakan districts. Data analysis involved data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results identified 39 instances of taboo language, classified into six categories: taboos regarding personal names, animal names, body parts, disease names, specific words, and profanity. The use of taboo language is influenced by fear, politeness, comfort, and religious teachings. Furthermore, its usage is heavily influenced by social contexts, including age, kinship ties, social status, location, and the communicative situation. The Gayo community also employs euphemisms—a form of linguistic softening—to avoid uttering words considered taboo. The study demonstrates that taboo language continues to function as a mechanism for upholding social norms, linguistic politeness, and the cultural identity of the Gayo people, even though it is undergoing shifts due to social change and the evolution of the times.

Abstract

Low self-confidence is one of the main obstacles preventing students from expressing opinions and performing in public, particularly among students involved in the Youth Red Cross (PMR) extracurricular program at school. This research aims to improve the self-confidence of PMR (Youth Red Cross) members in expressing opinions and performing in public through group guidance using role-playing techniques at SMPN 14 Banjarmasin. This school counseling action research was conducted collaboratively with three observers across three cycles involving ten PMR members at SMPN 14 Banjarmasin, using rating-scale observation sheets and a self-confidence questionnaire as data collection instruments, analyzed through comparative descriptive analysis across cycles. The results showed a gradual improvement in all confidence indicators from the pre-cycle stage through the third cycle, with all indicators eventually exceeding the established success threshold by the final cycle. These findings confirm that group guidance with the role-playing technique is effective as a gradual intervention for building the courage to perform and speak up among students involved in school organizations.

Abstract

Digital learning has become increasingly central to English language teaching, and Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) applications such as EWA are now widely used by students as a supplementary learning tool. However, empirical understanding of how learners actually perceive and experience EWA remains limited. This study aimed to explore eleventh-grade students' perceptions of using the EWA application as a digital learning tool for English and to identify the difficulties they experienced while using it. A qualitative case study design was employed. Data were collected from 20 students through an open-ended questionnaire, followed by semi-structured interviews with five selected participants and supported by document analysis of learning artifacts. The data were analyzed using Braun and Clarke's (2006) six-phase thematic analysis. The findings show that students' perceptions of EWA cluster into three themes: Good Experience, Ease of Use, and Supportive Features, reflecting an application perceived as enjoyable, motivating, easy to navigate, and pedagogically useful, particularly for vocabulary, listening, and pronunciation. Nevertheless, students also reported difficulties grouped into four categories: Challenging content, Behavioral self-regulation issues, Technical issues, and Limitations arising from the freemium system. These difficulties did not diminish students' overall positive perception of EWA. The study concludes that EWA functions best as an engaging, flexible supplementary resource that complements, rather than replaces, formal classroom instruction. Further research involving larger and more diverse participant groups is recommended to strengthen the generalizability of these findings.

Abstract

This study examines the role of English for Hospitality Purposes (EHP), integrated within the Side Duties Program (SDP), in fostering the career readiness of Grade XII Hotel Accommodation students at SMK Mutiara Terpadu Palabuhanratu. The study is motivated by the persistent gap between the General English instruction commonly delivered in vocational high schools and the specialized communicative demands of the international hospitality industry. A qualitative case study design was employed. Data were collected through in-depth, semi-structured interviews with five Grade XII students who had completed Field Work Practice (PKL) at three star-rated hotels in West Java, together with one Productive Hospitality teacher who supervises the program. Data were analyzed using the interactive model of data condensation, display, and conclusion drawing, with credibility established through source triangulation and member checking. The findings show that EHP is integrated into the Side Duties Program contextually and on a needs basis, with department-specific language content for Front Office, Food and Beverage Service, and Housekeeping. Students reported a substantial rise in English-speaking confidence, from baseline levels as low as 2 out of 10 to post-internship levels as high as 9.8 out of 10, and rated their overall career readiness between 8 and 9.8 out of 10. However, all student participants identified difficulty in comprehending diverse international accents and variable speech rates as the most significant unresolved challenge. The study concludes that the Side Duties Program is an effective work-based model for developing EHP competence and career readiness, but requires further strengthening through authentic multi-accent listening exposure, increased spontaneous speaking practice, and structured reflective learning.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the low learning outcomes of science and natural sciences in grade III, characterized by the learning outcomes of almost all students being low, namely below the criteria for achieving learning objectives set by the school. Likewise, teachers only use lecture methods rather than using media during learning. This research focuses on the use of local wisdom-based student worksheets (LKPD) in science learning on the topic of Family and Community Traditions. Based on these problems, the objectives to be achieved are (1) to determine the improvement of student learning outcomes using local wisdom-based student worksheets (LKPD), (2) to determine the implementation of local wisdom-based student worksheet media, (3) to determine student responses to local wisdom-based student worksheet media. The method used in this research is Classroom Action Research (CAR) adapting the Kemmis & MC Taggart model, consisting of two cycles and each cycle has four stages: initial planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. Data collection was carried out through tests (pretest and posttest), observation, student response questionnaires, and documentation. The subjects of this study were 15 third-grade students at SDN Dalam Pagar Ulu 2. The results of the study using local wisdom-based worksheets (LKPD) showed an improvement in the learning process. Learning outcomes in cycle I increased from 0% to 26%, and in cycle II from 46% to 87%. Learning implementation outcomes in cycle I, meeting 1, reached 71% and meeting 2, reached 86%. In cycle II, meeting 1 reached 72% and meeting 2, reached 91%. Student activity outcomes in cycle I, meeting 1 reached 60% and meeting 2, reached 83%. In cycle II, meeting 1 reached 66% and meeting 2 reached 91%. Student response outcomes reached 98%. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that learning using local wisdom-based worksheets can improve student learning outcomes. From the results of this study, there are several suggestions for school principals, teachers, and other researchers to be able to continue using or develop what has been done to obtain better results.
