Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate S. platensis powder dietary supplementation on the growth performance and color quality of polar blue cichlids. This study used a completely randomized design experimental method with four different dietary supplementation doses of S. platensis powder, namely 10 g/kg diet (A), 20 g/kg diet (B), 30 g/kg diet (C), and 0 g/kg diet (K). These treatments were replicated four times. The polar blue cichlids as fish samples had 4.07 ± 0.12 cm and 2.15 ± 0.22 g. Diets (38% protein) were produced by coating the commercial feed with S. platensis powder in appropriate dosage. Feeding was performed until apparent satiation twice a day for 45 days. All parameters, including growth performance (feed intake, weight gain, length gain, specific growth rate, feed conversion ratio, survival rate) and color quality (total grid percentage and total chromatophores), were analyzed using an analysis of variance and the Duncan's multiple range test was applied to obtain the best treatment in growth performance and color quality. The dietary supplementation of S. platensis powder had no significant effect on the growth performance of polar blue cichlids. However, this treatment provides a higher total grid percentage of blue color and total chromatophores in the fish. The best treatment on color quality was found in a 30 g/kg diet dose of S. platensis powder. Therefore, 30 g/kg dose of S. platensis powder is effective to improve the color quality of polar blue cichlids, although providing no significant effect on the growth of the fish.

Abstract

The high exploitation rates of several shark groups in Indonesia have the potential to threaten the sustainability of their populations. The shortfin mako shark (Isurus oxyrinchus) represents one of the most significant catches of shark species in the Indian Ocean, with a considerable portion of these catches landing at the Cilacap Ocean Fishing Port. Studies on the recovery of shark stocks must be conducted to provide effective management plans that will prevent overexploitation. The objective of this study is to ascertain the exploitation status of I. oxyrinchus and to develop a simulation model for its stock recovery. The data on the total catch of shortfin mako shark (I. oxyrinchus) in the period between 2009 and 2022 in the statistical report of Cilacap Ocean Fishing Port, were subjected to analysis using the CMSY (Catch-based Maximum Sustainable Yield) method. The analysis demonstrated that the total sustainable catch (MSY) was 9.6 tons, with an exploitation rate of 2.61. The utilization rate falls within the red zone, indicating that overfishing has occurred. The simulation results from several stock recovery scenarios indicated that a reduction in fishing mortality to 5% of FMSY (fishing mortality) would be required to achieve stock recovery in approximately 10 years. The implementation of stock recovery for I. oxyrinchus by reducing fishing pressure can be achieved by setting a maximum catch limit. Therefore, the establishment of a maximum catch limit represents a crucial conservation effort for this species, as well as a form of implementation of the CITES policy in Indonesia.

Abstract

The farming of red algae Kappaphycus alvarezii (trade name Eucheuma cottonii) has grown rapidly in East Nusa Tenggara since 1999, which has contributed significantly to increasing the income of the communities and region. The biggest problem faced since a decade ago is the ice-ice disease phenomenon which attacks the farming of K. alvarezii, reducing production, and the farmer's income drastically. This experimental study aimed to minimize the ice-ice disease infestation in the farming of K. alvarezii through the application of diversification methods. This research was conducted in the farming area of K. alvarezii in Sulamu Waters from July-September 2020.  An experimental method was tested in order to minimize ice-ce disease infestation. As a treatment, three longline nylon ropes were used with three replicates. The first line was placed by Gracilaria sp seeds; the second line by K. alvarezii seeds; while the third line by Sargassum polycystum seeds. The conventional farming method carried out by local farmers was used as control.  The parameters tested were disease incidence and intensity as well as growth rate.  The result showed that both treatment and control showed infestation of ice-ice disease. Farming with treatment using Gracilaria sp. and Sargassum polycistum gave better resistance to ice-ice disease compared to the one without (control). The treatment showed less incidence (12-38%), and intensity (0.05-0.435) of ice-ice disease compared to the control, 30-45% and 2,1-17,19% respectively. The contrary happened related to the growth rate. The control showed better daily growth (mean 4.74%) compared to the treatment (mean 4.70%).

Abstract

Sea turtles are marine biota that have an important role in the lives of coastal communities, but their existence has decreased due to threats to their habitat. The protection status of sea turtles has been regulated nationally and internationally, where they are fully protected. One location with potential sea turtle habitat in West Sulawesi is Ba'batoa Lapeo Beach in Polewali Mandar Regency. This is evidenced by the existence of community groups that carry out sea turtle conservation activities. This research analyzes the population of landed sea turtles, analyzes the success rate of hatching sea turtle eggs, and identifies threats that occur in efforts to manage sustainable sea turtle conservation at Ba'batoa Lapeo Beach. Data was collected through collaboration between BPSPL Makassar and the Laut Biru Community Group—the implementation of data collection from April to July 2024 through primary and secondary data collection. Primary data is obtained directly from the results of monitoring by the Laut Biru Community Group. Secondary data is used to describe primary data. Based on the analysis results, the type of sea turtle that landed on Ba'batoa Lapeo Beach was the Olive Ridley Turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea) 42 times. The highest percentage of Olive Ridley Sea Turtle eggs hatching was in July 2024 at 95.54%, while the lowest was in April 2024 at 51.45%. Threats to sea turtle habitat in Ba'batoa Lapeo Beach are abrasion and natural predators such as monitor lizards. The results of this study are expected to optimize the national sea turtle database and become a concern for stakeholders for sea turtle conservation management in West Sulawesi Province.

Abstract

Tegal City, located on the northern coast of Central Java, boasts abundant marine resources that support its thriving fisheries sector . However, the city faces various sustainable challenges in the processing of smoked fish by micro, small, and medium-scale Processing and Marketing Groups (Poklahsar), including obstacles in production, marketing, and product development. This research aims to formulate marketing strategies for smoked fish products processed by Poklahsar to increase sales. Using a qualitative and descriptive approach, this study involved 36 respondents from smoked fish processors. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and questionnaires to understand the socio-economic and technical conditions of Poklahsar. SWOT analysis was conducted to identify internal and external factors affecting marketing. The results indicate that the main strengths of the smoked fish business lie in the quality of raw materials, the availability of labor, and the market acceptance of the product's unique taste. However, weaknesses include limited packaging and marketing capabilities, as well as a lack of knowledge about information technology. Externally, there are opportunities to enter modern markets and utilize marketing technology, but challenges such as poor sanitation and intense competition pose threats. Based on the SWOT analysis, the business is positioned in quadrant 2, indicating that product diversification is the best approach to enhance competitiveness. Key recommendations include packaging innovation, capacity building for business actors, collaboration with the government, and strengthening distribution channels. Implementing these strategies is expected to increase sales and competitiveness of smoked fish products in Tegal City.
