Abstract

One of the natural ingredients that is often developed as an antibacterial product is the date palm (Phoenix dactylifera). However, scientific evidence regarding the effectiveness of the antibacterial compounds contained in dates needs to be evaluated, considering that several previous studies have reported that dates are more dominant as antioxidants than as antibacterials. Therefore, it is necessary to reevaluate the antibacterial ability of the methanolic extract of the sukkari variety date palm against the three test bacteria that cause acne, namely P. acnes, S. epidermidis and S. aureus. This research aimed to determine the sensitivity of the three bacteria tested in response to the methanol extract of the sukkari dates. This research design is experimental. The samples tested were sukkari and the tested bacteria were P. acnes, S. epidermidis and S. aureus. Dates were extracted by maceration method and made in concentrations of 50%, 60%, 70%, 80% and 90%. Positive control was chloramphenicol antibiotic while negative control was sterile distilled water. All treatments including control (+) and (-) were given to the test bacteria using the Kirby Baeur method to see the diameter of the zone of inhibition of the test bacteria growth. The data was processed in tabular form and compared with the 2016 CLSI standard to see the sensitivity response of the test bacteria. Results of this research is the sukkari dates extract with concentrations of 50%, 60%, 70%, 80% and 90% was able to inhibit the growth of P. acnes, S. epidermidis and S. aureus bacteria with an interval of 7.0-10.0 mm in diameter of the zone of inhibition. All the tested bacteria showed a sensitivity response in the resistant category, so the sukkari dates fruit extract is not the main choice to be developed as a natural anti-acne product.

Abstract

Pseudomonas sp. can degrade plastics because it has an inducible operon system that produces certain enzymes (esterase, serine, hydrolase, and lipase) in the process of carbon source metabolism. The purpose of this study was to determine the potential of Pseudomonas sp. as a plastic biodegradation agent. This research method is a systematic literature review which is carried out by collecting, understanding, analyzing and concluding as many as 30 national and international journal articles published from 2008 to 2022 from several search engines such as Google Scholar, Ncbi, Sinta, and Plos one with the keywords degrading microorganisms plastic. The steps of this research were made samples to be used, tested samples with bacterial isolation, filtered the bacteria, bacterial bacteria and biodegradation within a specified time period by looking at the % loss of plastic before treatment. The results of the literature review analysis showed that Pseudomonas sp. able to degrade plastic around 2-19% by utilizing plastic as a carbon source which will convert addition and condensation polymers into simple molecules such as monomers, dimers and oligomers during the inventory period within 1-3 months. Thus, the microorganisms in the form of Pseudomonas sp. can decompose plastic waste naturally and faster than other methods and does not cause adverse effects.

Abstract

The objective of this study were to identify effective variations in fertilizer doses for phytoremediation of heavy metal nickel (Ni) by using sengon plants (Paraserianthes falcataria) before being used for post-mining land reclamation. This research is an experimental study, the growth parameters measured include plant height, number of leaves, root length, and plant biomass. The data obtained were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and continued with Duncan's test. The manure used consists of chicken manure, calcium carbonate, and rice bran. Variation in fertilizer dose is the ratio between manure to mine soil 40:60 (A), 50:50 (B), 60:40 (C), 70:30 (D), and control without fertilizer (E) with four repetitions time. The results showed that there was a significant difference between the concentration of nickel content before and after the treatment of fertilizer dosing (p>0.05), which means that the dose of fertilizer can affect plant growth and phytoremediation abilities. The dose of D fertilizer (70:30) is the most suitable for phytoremediation of heavy metal nickel (Ni) because it shows the highest heavy metal concentration in the roots, which is 3.2 ppm. The plant growth parameters measured showed that the dose of fertilizer B (50:50) was most suitable for increasing plant height and biomass (P. falcataria) with a plant height of 27 cm and a biomass of 0.9 g/m2. The dose of C fertilizer (60:40) is most suitable for increasing the number of leaves with an average of 111.5 leaves. Control without fertilizer (E) is most suitable for increasing the root length of P. falcataria. Thus, the addition of manure affects the growth of P. falcataria, and nickel phytoremediation using P. falcataria at the dose of manure D (70:30) can reduce the nickel content in the soil.
