Abstract

Many literary works, such as novels and short stories, have been transformed into works in the form of audio-visual or film. This results in a dualism between enthusiasts of both types of works. Many enthusiasts of original works (novels) are disappointed with the results of the transfer of media to films. However, some people are satisfied with the transfer of the media, even preferring the film version to the original novel. A collection of short stories entitled Rectoverso by Dee Lestari which was transferred into a film has received a lot of praise. A collection of short stories and films are equally able to achieve the attention of the public. The two versions of Rectoverso's works have also received many awards national and international. Thus, this makes researchers interested in studying one of the short stories in Rectiverso entitled Malaikat Juga Tahu and a short film version with the same title. This research aims to find out the differences in the elements of the work of Malaikat Juga Tahu in the form of a short story and short film and to find out how the short story of Malaikat Juga Tahu is narrowed, elaborated and varied to be presented in a short film. This research used a qualitative method with the use of Pamusuk Eneste's ecranization theory as an analytical tool. The results of this research indicate changes in aspects of expansion, narrowing and variations of stories from short stories to short films. These changes were made to make the audience more immersed in the story by adding dramatic elements. In addition, the visualization element that is prioritized in the film version demands changes in the story version so that it is more acceptable to the audience.

Abstract

Communication is essential in society, as it allows individuals to express their thoughts, intentions, and feelings, directly impacting their quality of life. Language features are the foundation of effective communication. Learning language features are essential for effective interpersonal and intercultural communication. The research entitled The Implementation of Gender Language Features (Coates 2013) in the Prince & Me Movie aims to identify language features used by male and female main characters in the Prince & Me movie. In addition, this study will examine the factors that influence the use of language features by male and female main characters. This research will fill this gap by exploring how language feature traits are related to certain factors that influence language use in the context of the movie The Prince & Me. This study analyzes the data using Coates's (2013) theory of language features and Holmes's (2013) social factor theory. This descriptive qualitative research uses the purposive sampling technique—the data collected from the Prince & Me movie (2004). The findings show that women and men used the same language features with similar frequency. According to the research, Paige, the female character, and Eddie, the male character, used the question feature the most. This study also shows that the topic is the most frequent factor that influences the utterances of female and male characters.

Abstract

This research delves into the intricate layers of Amma Crellin's character in Gillian Flynn's "Sharp Objects'' through the lens of Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis theory. By employing Freud's framework, this research embarks on a psychological journey, exploring the labyrinth of her subconscious, desires, and inner conflicts. The exploration encompasses the realms of consciousness and unconsciousness, delves into the dynamics of the id, ego, and superego, scrutinizes the manifestations of anxiety, and examines the utilization of self defense mechanisms as they intertwine with Amma's character. The choice to apply psychoanalysis to Amma's character is deliberate and well-suited to her complexities. Psychoanalysis offers a profound understanding of her psyche, allowing us to peel back the layers of her consciousness, navigate the corridors of her mind, and shed light on the anxieties that torment her. By dissecting her neurotic, moral, and realistic anxieties, we bridge the chasm between her inner world and external actions, underscoring the enduring relevance of Freud's psychoanalysis in comprehending her character. The methodology relies on a qualitative approach, emphasizing descriptive research. Data exclusively originates from Gillian Flynn's "Sharp Objects," with reading and close reading techniques as our primary tools. In summary, this research embarks on an explicit and detailed quest to unearth the intricacies of Amma's hidden desires and dark secrets. Through this exploration, it forges a compelling link between literature and psychology, emphasizing the timelessness of the human mind, both within the pages of novels and in real life. Keywords: Anxiety; Consciousness; Ego; Id; Self-defense mechanism; Superego; Psychoanalysis; Unconsciousness

Abstract

This research delves into the linguistic intricacies within the Salafi Islamic boarding school situated in Babakan, Ciwaringin, Cirebon—a microcosm of diversity in social and linguistic backgrounds. Employing a descriptive qualitative design with a sociolinguistic approach, the study explores language maintenance and shift among the students, emphasizing the intricate interplay between language and social contexts. Through the Simak Bebas Libat Cakap 'observation' technique, questionnaires, and interviews, the data unveils a dynamic coexistence of language maintenance and shift, notably observed in Bahasa Cirebon, Indonesian, and regional languages. Native speakers exhibit resilience in using Bahasa Cirebon during interactions with diverse interlocutors, while language shift occurs when individuals with distinct linguistic backgrounds opt for languages other than the regional one in communicative events. This research not only provides insights into linguistic resilience within the Salafi pesantren community but also highlights the adaptability of regional languages in multifaceted linguistic environments. The incorporation of the Unified Regional Linguistic Resilience Theory enriches the theoretical underpinning, offering a comprehensive lens for comprehending language dynamics in Islamic boarding schools. This contribution extends to the broader discourse on language, identity, and communication, emphasizing the significance of regional languages in diverse sociocultural settings.
