Abstract

This study aims to analyze the operational efficiency and crew management dynamics on the purse seine vessel KM Sinar Harapan 88, based at the Nusantara Fisheries Port (PPN) in Sibolga. The main issue addressed is how onboard organizational structure and internal factors influence the effectiveness of the fishing process, particularly during the hauling stage, which consumes the most time. The research employed a participatory observation method over a 19-day active fishing voyage, combined with structured interviews involving 15 crew members and the captain. Quantitative data were analyzed using multiple linear regression to assess the influence of the number of active crew, setting duration, and weather conditions on hauling time. The results indicate that a well-structured workflow, clear task distribution, and efficient coordination significantly contribute to smooth vessel operations. The average duration of one fishing cycle (setting–hauling–handling) is approximately 2.5 hours, with hauling accounting for the largest portion of time (±43%). Regression analysis revealed that both the number of active crew members and setting duration had a statistically significant effect on hauling time (p < 0.05), whereas weather conditions did not show a statistically significant impact. These findings emphasize that operational efficiency on purse seine vessels is more strongly influenced by human.

Abstract

Tembang fish (Sardinella fimbriata) is the dominant and economical fish catch at Technical Unit of Bulu Coastal Fisheries Port (CFP) and is delivered to Bulu Fish Auction Site (FAS) or known as TPI Bulu. Tembang fish has perishable food characteristics, so it is necessary to improve the quality of freshly caught fish by maximising handling methods, facilities, and sanitary hygiene. Fishermen in TPI Bulu still rarely apply cold chain to maintain fish quality and some use formalin because it is easily available and cheap. This study aims to determine the quality of tembang fish at TPI Bulu. Testing parameters include organoleptic test, pH test, TPC test, and formalin test. The results of the research on 90 tembang fish samples obtained an average organoleptic value of 7.00 and pH 6.16. The formalin test results were 32 samples (35.6%) positive for formalin and 58 samples (64.4%) negative for formalin. The average TPC test result was 4.7 x 105 CFU/gr. The results of the inspection of Good Fish Handling Methods (GFHM) 30% of the criteria were fulfilled and 70% of the criteria were not fulfilled.

Abstract

The production of capture fisheries in a water area can increase or decrease, this is known from the value of Catch per Unit Effort (CPUE). This study aims to calculate the CPUE value of small pelagic fish in the JMF triangle and explain correlation of CPUE with environmental factors (sea surface temperature and chlorophyll-a). The data analyzed were Aqua-MODIS image, SNPP-VIIRS image, and capture data. The analysis used simple correlation and regression tests to determine the relationship of CPUE to sea surface temperature (SST) and chlorophyll-a, further strengthened by overlay techniques for its descriptive. Information is presented in the form of spatial and temporal thematic maps and infographics. The results showed a trend of increasing the total CPUE of small pelagic fish production for the 2012-2015 period. The highest seasonal CPUE occurs in the Western Season period, and the lowest in the Transitional Season II. The highest CPUE value occurred in January 2013 with a value of 0.54 tons/ship, while the lowest CPUE was in September 2015 with a value of 0.052 tons/ship. Layang, Banyar and Bentong species responded negatively to SST, especially in the Eastern Season, while Lemuru showed no direct relationship to SST. Lemuru's response to chlorophyll-a showed a positive value, where it was seen that an increase in chlorophyll-a concentration was followed by an increase in CPUE, while Layang, Banyar and Bentong showed that an increase in the value of chlorophyll-a concentration did not directly affect the increase in the CPUE value of the three species.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the differences between tourist and non-tourist beach ecosystems based on the community structure of Ocypode sp. Community analysis was carried out at two locations: Loang Baloq Beach (tourism) and Setangi Beach (non-tourism). The line-transect method was chosen for sample collection. At each location, three stations were created, and at each station, there were five quadrants. The water physico-chemical data collection consists of brightness, pH, temperature, TDS, and EC (conductivity). Apart from that, data was collected on human activity around the beach using certain criteria: 1) distance from the beach to the city center; 2) the existence of hotels or buildings around the beach; 3) the presence of physical waste; 4) visitor frequency; and 5) the existence of public facilities. Samples of Ocypode sp. were identified and then analyzed using density formulas, relative density, and diversity index. We found five species of ghost crab (Ocypode sp.) at Loang Baloq and Setangi Beach: Ocypode kuhlii, Ocypode jousseamei, Ocypode pallidula, Ocypode ryderi, and Ocypode japonica. The highest density and diversity of Ocypode sp. are found at Setangi Beach (non-tourist). The physico-chemistry of Setangi Beach waters shows better quality than Loang Baloq Beach. Likewise, the characteristics of human activity in the coastal area were observed. It can be concluded that physico-chemical factors and human activities influence the density and diversity of Ocypode sp. In addition, based on the community structure of Ocypode sp., it is stated that Setangi Beach (non-tourist) has better ecosystem quality than Loang Baloq Beach (tourism).

Abstract

Shrimp resources in Mukomuko waters have been exploited by minitrawl since the 1980s.  High fishing pressure has been reported due to intensive trawling in a relatively small fishing area. Appropriate management measures are needed to maintain the sustainability of the shrimp resource. The aim of this study was to assess the exploitation status of the shrimp (Parapenaeopsis stylifera) as a basic information for sustainable shrimp management.  A simple random sampling technique was used to sample the shrimp. The results showed that female shrimp dominated the catch of kiddy shrimp in Mukomuko waters. The growth pattern of kiddy shrimp showed a negative allometric pattern.  The gonadal maturity level (GML/TKG) of kiddy shrimp was dominated by TKG II and TKG III categories.  The value of fishing mortality (F) for the growth parameters of Kiddy shrimp was higher than natural mortality (M). The exploitation rate (E) of Kiddy shrimp was 0.78. The SPR value of kiddy shrimp was 0.21 or 21% moderate or close to overexploitation.  This study recommends three management options: replacing shrimp trawls with environmentally friendly fishing gear, opening and closing fishing areas and seasons, and reducing fishing effort.
