Abstract

Cohesion and coherent writing are important aspects of a well-written paragraph. For a paragraph to successfully communicate its meaning, it must be coherent and cohesive. Examining how English for Specific Purposes (ESP) students use discourse connectors in their writing was the aim of this study. The argumentative essays written by students enrolled in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) courses were the main focus of the study. Thirty-six essays from ESP students were chosen as the sample for this study using a purposive sampling technique. Methods of quantitative analysis were applied to the data. The results showed that the students' use of a wide variety of discourse connectors was lacking. Furthermore, they did not use enough accurate discourse connections. Additionally, it was seen that discourse connectors were being used excessively. In addition, the discourse connectors "and," "or," "because (of)," and "so (that)" were most frequently employed. The study produced a number of recommendations for instructional strategies and further investigation. Lastly, it was anticipated that this study would be helpful for future research on the application of discourse connectors.

Abstract

English language proficiency has become essential for those pursuing higher education in our fast-paced environment. A growing demand for jobs in the global workplace is coming from English speakers in particular. For many students, especially those who are non-native speakers of the language, public speaking in English presents a considerable difficulty. This research investigated the effects of an interactive video project on students' public speaking confidence in English. The middle and final exams for students were designed to include project-based learning in addition to classroom activities. In order to receive constructive comments from their lecturer and fellow students, students in this project had to produce and deliver videos on the prescribed themes. In this study, 20 students who had completed an interactive video project for class and the semester exam in Regular English at Universitas Pendidikan Nasional (Undiknas University) Denpasar, Bali, participated in a semi-structured interview and observation of the classroom during a descriptive qualitative approach. This study's conclusions showed that students' self-assessed confidence in their ability to give English public speeches or presentations can significantly increase as a result of the interactive video project. A process of iterative production, presentation, and feedback was combined with the interactive project. Students had an entertaining chance to hone and polish their speaking abilities with the interactive video project.

A total of 252 teachers comprised the research population, and 159 of them were selected through random selection techniques to serve as research samples. Questionnaires are used for data collecting, while descriptive analysis, multiple linear regression analysis, classical assumption tests, and path analysis are used for data analysis. The results of this research show that the variable regression value is a positive number, such as the regression coefficient of the principal's transformational leadership variable on the teacher performance variable (X1-Y) of 0.418, the regression coefficient of the principal's transformational leadership variable on the organizational commitment variable (X1-Z) of 0.335, The regression coefficient of the organizational climate variable on the teacher performance variable (X2-Y) is 0.179, the regression coefficient of the organizational climate variable on organizational commitment (X2-Z) is 0.637, the regression coefficient of the organizational commitment variable on the teacher performance variable (Z-Y) is 0.271, the regression coefficient the principal's transformational leadership through organizational commitment to teacher performance (X1-Z-Y) is 0.090 and the regression coefficient of organizational climate through organizational commitment to teacher performance (X2-Z-Y) is 0.172. The study's findings indicate that there is a strong direct relationship between the principal's transformational leadership variables, organizational climate, and organizational commitment, and that there is a strong indirect relationship between the principal's transformational leadership and organizational commitment, as well as a significant relationship between the organization's climate and organizational commitment and teacher performance.

Abstract

A professional tour guide should possess good competence in English to communicate with their guests. However, the truth often reveals that many tour guides have inadequate English skills and they are not confident enough to offer tours. They need a kind of training or an education program to increase their knowledge and skills in tourists guiding. This is a regular occurrence in underdeveloped nations, such as Indonesia. Consequently, they need specific tourist guiding knowledge and skills as well as English mastery. This study aims to identify demographic data of tourist guides in Malang, both their strengths and weaknesses in English competence and also to map and analyze the need for English competence for tourist guides in the city of Malang. The object of this research is 22 tourist guides of Malang city. This research was conducted in Malang city. This study uses mixed method where the researcher uses both quantitative and qualitative approach in order to produce a better understanding of the problem. Researchers used 2 types of data collection tools, namely questionnaires and interview guidelines. The questionnaire used in the form of a closed question questionnaire with a Likert scale along with open questions. FGDs were also conducted to obtain in-depth information about research problems. The findings revealed that tour guides required four different types of English skills. The learning activities required are conversations, discussions and brainstorming, as well as individual presentations or learning activities that emphasize speaking skills. There are some suggestions proposed to curriculum developers, Department of tourism and Indonesian tour guides. Considering the significance of needs analysis, prior to developing training program, it is pivotal to conduct needs analysis to probe information on language proficiency, learning objectives and learning preference of the learners.

Abstract

One of the main drivers of human resource development is education. Particularly in coastal regions like Mantigola village, which is home to the Bajo tribe, Indonesia struggles to provide fair and high-quality education. One of the factors contributing to unequal access to education, according to the National Development Planning Agency (2014), is remote rural geographic settings. Aside from topographical issues, the primary concerns at Mantigola State Satap Middle School are inadequate infrastructure, low reading and writing literacy, and the pupils' fishing culture. The Merdeka Curriculum places a strong emphasis on creating learning experiences that are student-centered. Before establishing learning objectives, the Dick and Carey methodology provides a way to assess instructional needs using Front End Analysis (FEA). This study investigates how FEA is used at Satap Negeri Mantigola Middle School to create learning goals that are pertinent to the Merdeka Curriculum and appropriate for the students' setting. The implementation of FEA in this situation was examined using a qualitative descriptive case study methodology. The findings demonstrate how FEA aids in determining the needs, performance, and learning environments of students as well as in creating more purposeful and flexible learning objectives.
