Abstract

School-Based Management (SBM) demands effective leadership and organizational capacity for school autonomy to impact quality improvement. This study aims to analyze the role of principals in strengthening SBM in public high schools and compare instructional leadership practices and organizational capacity across school types. The research approach used a descriptive literature study design; data were collected from books, scientific articles, regulations, and reports that were analyzed critically and thematically. The results indicate that public high school principals are generally more mature in setting strategic goals, using data for evidence-based planning, implementing systematic academic supervision, and building a collaborative culture; while many private high schools especially medium and small experienced limitations in capacity, data, training, networking, and monitoring and evaluation mechanisms. The findings also emphasize the role of principals as capacity builders who mobilize resources and strengthen coordination. The discussion links the results to the literature on instructional leadership and SBM and highlights contextual barriers that influence implementation. This study addresses the research objectives by uncovering similarities and differences in leadership and organizational capacity-enhancing factors. It also recommends strengthening data-based training, developing monitoring and evaluation systems, and expanding partnerships as policy measures. These recommendations are expected to support more evidence-based, participatory, and sustainable SBM practices, thereby significantly improving the quality of learning in high schools

Abstract

This study aims to conduct an in-depth analysis of the accountability-based management of School Operational Assistance (BOS) funds to improve the quality of education at SMK Ma'arif NU 2 Karanglewas, Banyumas Regency. Although various previous studies have highlighted the importance of transparency and accountability in the management of BOS funds, research that specifically focuses on vocational school contexts remains limited. In fact, vocational education has its own complexities, particularly concerning the need for practical facilities, the strengthening of productive teachers' competencies, and the governance of expertise programs. This research gap indicates the necessity of providing a more detailed analysis of how accountability practices can directly contribute to improving the quality of educational services in vocational institutions. This study employs a qualitative approach using a case study method, enabling the researcher to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics of BOS fund management within the educational unit. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with the principal, BOS treasurer, teachers, and the school committee. Field observations and document analysis-including financial reports and records of budget realization-were used to enhance the validity of the findings. The results show that SMK Ma'arif NU 2 Karanglewas has implemented accountability principles through systematic and transparent financial reporting, the active involvement of the school committee in planning and monitoring processes, and the provision of publicly accessible information. These accountability practices have made a tangible contribution to improving learning facilities and infrastructure, strengthening the quality of teaching and learning processes, and enhancing teacher professionalism. Thus, the accountability of BOS fund management functions not only as an administrative obligation but also as a strategic foundation for building public trust and strengthening community participation in the continuous improvement of educational quality.

Abstract

Critical thinking is an essential competency in 21st-century learning and the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum, particularly for Vocational High School (SMK) students to face the complexities of the workforce. This study aims to describe the critical thinking processes of female and male vocational students in solving trigonometry problems. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach. The research subjects consisted of one female student and one male student with high mathematical ability. Data were collected through trigonometry problem-solving tasks and task-based interviews. The data were analyzed in-depth using Facione's six critical thinking indicators: interpretation, analysis, inference, evaluation, explanation, and self-regulation. The results indicated distinct characteristics in the thinking processes between the two subjects. The female student demonstrated a systematic and reflective thinking process; she was able to perform accurate interpretation and analysis, utilized evidence-based inference, and showed strong evaluation and self-regulation skills in verifying the solution against problem constraints. In contrast, the male student tended to exhibit an impulsive and intuitive thinking process; he encountered misconceptions during the analysis stage and demonstrated weak evaluation and self-regulation processes, resulting in an illogical final outcome. This study concludes that there are variations in critical thinking process characteristics between female and male vocational students regarding the depth of evaluation and self-regulation when solving trigonometry problems.
