Abstract

This study explores the role of E-portfolios in students’ cognitive development in speaking, focusing on fluency and pronunciation. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, the research investigates the experiences of eleventh-grade students at a senior high school in Buleleng, Bali, during the 2024/2025 academic year. Data were collected through researcher’s notes and semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings indicate that E-portfolios significantly enhanced students’ fluency and pronunciation through repeated practice, self-assessment, and peer feedback. Compared to previous studies conducted at the university level, this research highlights that high school students require additional instructional support when using E-portfolios. The study concludes that while E-portfolios are an effective tool for improving speaking skills, integrating spontaneous speaking exercises and structured feedback mechanisms can further enhance students' oral proficiency.

Abstract

The novel as a work of literature may contain beneficial insights, including pedagogical philosophies. The present study aimed to discover constructivist teacher strategies used by Miss Honey, the teacher character in Roald Dahl's Matilda. Through qualitative method enriched with the constructivist perspective, the study revealed that Miss Honey employed eight constructivist strategies as an elementary school teacher in her class. The first strategy was encouraging students' autonomy and initiative by letting them try reading a long sentence on the blackboard before giving examples of how to read them. The second strategy was the use of primary and physical materials as the source of manipulative and interactive materials, such as exercise books, poetry books, and posters. The third strategy involved inviting the students' responses during the learning activities and making them active. The fourth strategy was allowing the students to construct their conceptual knowledge before concluding it. The fifth strategy was encouraging teacher-students and peer dialogues. Miss Honey also trained students' cognition by using open-ended questions. Besides, Miss Honey also sought elaboration of students' initial responses to cultivate their reasoning. The last constructivist strategy implemented by Miss Hone was allowing the students to think after posing questions to construct their opinions. These findings imply that the novel can be a good reading material for elementary school teachers to illustrate how to implement constructivist strategies in a beginner class.

Abstract

The rapid development of generative AI (GenAI), such as ChatGPT, brought both opportunities and challenges to higher education. Although the government had issued guidelines for GenAI usage, many universities still lacked concrete policies at the institutional level. This study aimed to examine the factors contributing to the acceptance of ChatGPT in academic contexts using the UTAUT model as a basis for policy formulation. A quantitative approach was employed, involving 326 undergraduate students from a private university in Jakarta. Data were analyzed using PLS-SEM to assess the contributions of Performance Expectancy, Effort Expectancy, Social Influence, and Facilitating Conditions in predicting Behavioral Intention (R² = 0.871, p < 0.05) and Actual Use (R² = 0.869, p < 0.05). Performance Expectancy (β = 0.550, p < 0.05) emerged as the strongest predictor, indicating that students had experienced tangible benefits from using ChatGPT. These findings suggested that a complete ban on AI use was not advisable. However, Social Influence (β = 0.191, p < 0.05) and Facilitating Conditions (β = 0.210, p < 0.05) were the weakest contributors, reflecting that AI had not yet been fully integrated into learning practices. The influence of peers and lecturers also remained insufficient in encouraging ChatGPT use. Therefore, universities were encouraged to develop clear guidelines, supportive infrastructure, and concrete policies to meaningfully integrate AI into educational practices. The findings of this study provided an empirical foundation for developing student-centered AI policies in higher education.

The findings indicated that participants possessed ethical awareness in using ChatGPT strategically and responsibly. In addition, they demonstrated a tendency to avoid excessive reliance on technology and showed greater confidence in their own abilities.
