Abstract

Deforestation remains a major socio-environmental problem because forest conversion often remains economically attractive despite its widely recognized ecological and social costs. This study examines how profit-seeking helps explain decisions that lead to forest loss and considers how conservation-oriented choices can be strengthened without neglecting livelihood needs. Using a qualitative literature review and document analysis of foundational economic texts, peer-reviewed studies on deforestation, environmental behavior research, and policy reports on sustainable forest governance, the study identifies four recurring patterns. First, forests are often treated as assets that can be converted into short-term income through timber extraction, agricultural expansion, infrastructure development, and land speculation. Second, Adam Smith’s concept of self-interest helps explain why actors prioritize immediate economic returns, but it does not fully account for environmental decision-making, which is also shaped by institutions, social norms, moral responsibility, and education. Third, profit-seeking becomes more damaging where property rights are weak, monitoring is limited, and policy enforcement is inconsistent. Fourth, conservation outcomes tend to improve when economic incentives are restructured through community forestry, payments for ecosystem services, and livelihood-oriented sustainable development strategies. This study contributes to debates on forest governance by showing that deforestation is shaped not by profit alone, but by the interaction of economic motivation, institutional conditions, and ethical regulation.

Abstract

This study investigates the effect of environmental knowledge on green purchase intention and examines the moderating role of moral obligation in this relationship. A quantitative research design was employed using a survey approach. Data were gathered through an online questionnaire administered to 512 individuals who have prior experience considering or purchasing environmentally friendly products. The analysis was conducted using SmartPLS version 4. The results reveal that environmental knowledge exerts a positive and significant influence on green purchase intention. In addition, moral obligation significantly moderates this relationship. Specifically, the impact of environmental knowledge on purchase intention becomes stronger when individuals possess a heightened sense of moral responsibility toward environmental preservation. These findings support existing literature by highlighting the interplay between cognitive factors (knowledge) and moral considerations in shaping sustainable consumption behavior. The study also emphasizes the importance of combining educational efforts with ethical awareness in developing effective green marketing strategies.

Abstract

This study investigates the extent to which Generation Z consumers in Palembang are willing to pay a price premium for environmentally friendly products. Employing a quantitative correlational design, the study positions willingness to pay as the dependent variable, while environmental concern, green future estimation, perceived green benefits, and perceived green product quality serve as the independent variables. The research population comprises Generation Z consumers residing in Palembang, with 1,004 respondents selected using purposive sampling. Data were obtained through an online questionnaire containing 15 items assessed on a five-point Likert scale. The collected data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The findings reveal that environmental concern, green future estimation, perceived green benefits, and perceived green product quality each exert a positive and significant influence on consumers’ willingness to pay for green products. These results indicate that Generation Z in Palembang possesses a relatively strong environmental awareness and a considerable readiness to support sustainable consumption through their purchasing behavior. This study enriches the literature on green consumer behavior by emphasizing the importance of cognitive and perceptual factors in explaining willingness to pay among Generation Z consumers.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of loan portfolio composition on bank risk in Asia-Pacific countries. From a banking accounting perspective, loan portfolio composition represents a key component of earning assets, reflecting asset quality, credit risk exposure, and the effectiveness of banks in managing income sources and risk. The relationship between loan portfolio composition and bank risk remains inconclusive in both theoretical and empirical literature. On the flip side, a more diversified loan portfolio may reduce risk through diversification benefits. On the other hand, increased diversification may also lead to higher complexity, potential moral hazard, and excessive risk-taking behavior. This study employs data from commercial banks across 15 Asia-Pacific countries over the period 2011–2022. Bank risk is measured using the Ln.Z-score, while loan portfolio composition is proxied by income diversification. The results indicate that loan portfolio composition has a negative effect on bank risk, suggesting that banks with more diversified loan portfolios tend to have lower risk and greater income stability. This study contributes to the banking accounting literature by highlighting that loan portfolio composition is not only an intermediation instrument but also an important indicator of asset quality, credit risk, and financial stability. The findings provide practical implications for regulators and bank management in strengthening risk measurement, reporting, and monitoring systems.

Abstract

This study examines the efficacy of Good Corporate Governance (GCG) as an oversight mechanism against earnings management, utilizing audit quality as a moderating variable. Employing a quantitative methodology, the research population comprises basic industry and chemical companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) spanning the 2022–2025 period. Through purposive sampling from an initial pool of 95 firms, a final sample of 76 companies was selected, yielding 304 firm-year observations. Empirical findings demonstrate that the proportion of independent commissioners, the presence of female commissioners on the board, and the board's financial and accounting expertise all exert a significant negative effect on earnings management. Furthermore, audit quality is proven to strengthen the mitigating effect of these three board characteristics on earnings management practices. The implications of this study suggest that fostering board independence, gender diversity, and specialized financial expertise, coupled with high-quality external audits, is critical for constraining opportunistic managerial behavior and safeguarding the integrity of financial reporting.

Abstract

This study investigates the effect of the SCROL (Survey, Connect, Read, Outline, Look Back) strategy on the reading comprehension achievement of seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Tanjung Batu, Ogan Ilir, Indonesia. Many junior high school EFL students in Indonesian contexts continue to struggle with identifying main ideas, interpreting supporting details, and engaging independently with written texts challenges inadequately addressed by the Project-Based Learning (PBL) approach currently mandated under the Merdeka curriculum. This study aimed to determine whether SCROL instruction significantly improved students' reading comprehension and whether a significant between-group difference existed compared to conventional instruction. A quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group design was employed with 60 seventh-grade students (experimental: n=30; control: n=30). Data were collected through validated and reliable multiple-choice reading comprehension pre-tests and post-tests. Paired samples t-tests confirmed significant within-group improvement in the experimental group (t = −28.016, p = 0.000), and independent samples t-tests confirmed a significant between-group difference in post-test scores (t = 11.600, p = 0.000). These findings demonstrate that the SCROL strategy is an effective, structured instructional approach for junior high school EFL learners. English teachers are encouraged to integrate SCROL explicitly into reading instruction, particularly in contexts where students lack strategic comprehension frameworks.

Abstract

This study investigates how product quality, social media marketing, and word-of-mouth influence consumer purchase decisions among small culinary businesses in Malang, Indonesia. The research employed a quantitative explanatory design with purposive sampling. A total of 120 respondents were selected based on three criteria: being at least 17 years old, having purchased from small culinary enterprises within the previous six months, and having received information about the businesses through social media or personal recommendations. Data were gathered using a structured questionnaire measured on a five-point Likert scale. Multiple linear regression was used to analyze the data after conducting validity and reliability assessments as well as classical assumption tests. Hypotheses were tested through t-tests to examine partial effects and an F-test to assess simultaneous effects. The results indicate that product quality, social media marketing, and word-of-mouth each have a positive and statistically significant impact on purchase decisions. Social media marketing was identified as the strongest predictor, followed by product quality and word-of-mouth. Together, these variables accounted for 62.9% of the variance in purchase decisions, demonstrating substantial explanatory power. The findings highlight the importance of maintaining product consistency, implementing engaging social media strategies, and encouraging positive customer recommendations. Future studies are encouraged to include broader samples, additional variables such as price and service quality, and alternative analytical techniques to enhance generalizability.

Abstract

This study analyzes Indonesia’s defense diplomacy through its participation in the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO). The prolonged conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has created multidimensional security challenges that require collective international responses through United Nations peacekeeping operations. Indonesia’s involvement in MONUSCO reflects not only its commitment to maintaining international peace and security, but also its strategic efforts in strengthening its role within multilateral security cooperation. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method through literature studies, document analysis, and the examination of official reports from the United Nations, MONUSCO, and the Indonesian National Armed Forces. The study uses the theory of defense diplomacy to examine how Indonesia utilizes peacekeeping operations as an instrument to support foreign policy objectives and strengthen international cooperation. The findings show that Indonesia carries out defense diplomacy through peacekeeping activities, civil-military cooperation, humanitarian assistance, and Quick Impact Projects (QIP) aimed at supporting local communities in conflict areas. These activities contribute to strengthening Indonesia’s international image, enhancing military professionalism, and building trust with local communities. However, Indonesia also faces operational and security challenges in implementing defense diplomacy within the complex dynamics of multidimensional peacekeeping missions. This study concludes that Indonesia’s participation in MONUSCO represents a form of cooperative defense diplomacy that combines security and humanitarian approaches in supporting international peace efforts.

Abstract

This study analyzes the technical efficiency and sustainable productivity dynamics of the Tjoekir Sugar Factory under PT Sinergi Gula Nusantara during the 2021–2025 period. The Indonesian sugar industry continues to face structural challenges, including low productivity, aging production assets, and increasing dependency on sugar imports, making operational efficiency a critical issue for industrial sustainability. This research employed a quantitative approach using the output-oriented Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) CCR model to measure relative technical efficiency and the Malmquist Productivity Index (MPI) to evaluate changes in Total Factor Productivity (TFP) through efficiency change and technological change decomposition. The findings reveal that the factory achieved efficient frontier performance in 2023 and 2025, while inefficiencies in other periods were associated with input slack and operational instability. The MPI results indicate that productivity growth was primarily driven by technological change rather than managerial efficiency improvement, suggesting that asset optimization through maintenance and overhaul played a significant role in enhancing operational performance. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that improved efficiency contributes to sustainability objectives by reducing production losses, optimizing by-product utilization, and supporting Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices within the company’s operations. This research highlights the importance of integrating technological reliability, operational management, and sustainability principles to strengthen the long-term competitiveness and resilience of Indonesia’s sugar industry.
