Abstract

AbstractThe diasporic issues, including rejection and doubleness of cultural identities, are still existent and requiring attention and solutions. These issues may be expressed in the form of diasporic literature. The article used the concepts of rejection and doubleness of cultural identity to analyze the novel. The researchers analyze the novel Ayesha at Last which contains diasporic characters and issues in order to highlight the problems diasporic people encounter expressed in the novel. The main issues that are analyzed are the diasporic rejection and doubleness of cultural identity. The article found these problems and issues of rejection and doubleness faced by the diasporic characters in the novel. The article concluded that these rejections and doubleness in diaspora found in the novel is an expression of the real world issues the diaspora community faces. Abstract

Abstract The study is titled "fourth-grade English textbook material analysis ". Titled "my next words grade 4 - student's book for elementary school ". The purpose of the study is to decide whether the content in an English textbook entitled "my next words grade 4 - student's book for elementary school" has the criteria for a good English textbook recommendation from some experts. This textbook analyzes the use of standards based entirely on dictation. Is made up of 4 standards; Materials, language, material presentations and image retrieval of the text book. Qualitative descriptive USES asa study technique to answer the problem of the study. Regarding the statistics collected, the writer concluded that the English textbook "my next words grade 4-student's book for elementary school" has met the remarkable English textbook that is based entirely on what some scholars mean. This suggests that the target of learning has met the criteria of this English textbook. In the book's criteria, there may be one element that does not meet his criteria. And in the practice unit, there are several chapters that don't fit the criteria of a good English textbook. But at maximum they had met the standards of an excellent English textbook. Abstract

Because of the pandemic, Indonesian government implemented new policies in the education system. Previously, education and training took place in the luring situation on a regular basis, particularly in higher education institutions, and now it is entirely daring. The current study aims to examine students' issues in speaking for ESP contexts during the COVID-19 circumstance when they were learning the English language by the online situation. The descriptive qualitative design was used in this study. The information was gathered using questionnaire in the help of Google form media and also interviews with 40 students from the fourth semester of the Management Informatics Diploma Major at Piksi Input Serang Polytechnic in Banten. Based on this study, the research findings highlighted a variety of issues for students. Six issues emerged during distance learning in the Speaking course. The first issue that arose was students' learning equipment and supporting facilities. The second issue was dealing with students' accessibility restrictions to Online Video Conference. The third issue was students' concerns on the lecturer's materials during an online lesson. The fourth issue was the students' approach to completing the lecturer's task or assignment. The use of online streaming videos as a media of learning resources also had a role in the fifth and final issue that emerged during distance learning amid COVID-19 pandemic situations is students' limited cell signal and internet quota. The findings can be used to further enhance and improve online teaching and learning techniques. Further research into how students deal with obstacles is encouraged.

Abstract

This objective of the research was to prove whether there is significantly effective or not to use video in teaching listening for the eleventh grade students at SMA Al-Ikhlas Lubuklinggau. In this research, the researcher used pre-experimental method with one group pre-test and post-test. In collecting data, the researcher used the written test that was given twice to the students, pre-test and post-test. The researcher analyzed the data through individual score, normality testing, and matched t-test formula. The results showed that were 6 students passed the pre-test and 10 students failed in pre-test. While in the post-test, the students’ score increased, there were 14 students mastered the post-test and 2 students failed the post-test. In pre-test mean score was 66.25 and mean score in post-test was 85.31. The result of matched t-test, tobtained was 7.94 and ttable was 1.7531. it meant that the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. So it was significantly effective to teach listening skill by using video media to the eleventh grade students at SMA Al-Ikhlas Lubuklinggau. Keywords: Listening Skill, Teaching, Video Media

Abstract

This research was conducted to increase vocabulary through reading newspapers and to determine the effectiveness of reading newspapers in increasing students vocabulary. This research uses library research method. This study also discusses reading comprehension, where reading comprehension can also improve vocabulary. Using the newspaper reading method to increase vocabulary in English class still makes it difficult for students to understand the meaning of the word. However, based on several previous studies, it can be concluded that reading newspapers can increase vocabulary and also significantly improve reading comprehension. Using this method can help teachers to be able to provide learning to students effectively, especially increasing vocabulary. In conclusion, reading English newspapers is very helpful for learning new words, idioms phrases and sentence structures. It also helps them to learn how to take out the meaning of the sentences. English newspapers help students to become better learners.

Abstract

The objectives of this research is to describe the process of teaching writing recount texts by using diary, to find out the teacher’s problem sand students’ responses toward using diary. The research employs a descriptive qualitative research. Findings show the use of diary in teaching writing recount text could help and develop students’ writing. The teacher explained and instructed in procedural teaching practice to diary usage. However, the problems were limited time at the activities and lack of the teacher’s knowledge. Generally, the use of diary gave a creativity both the teacher and students and made students motivated in learning writing. Thus, diary is one of effective ways to express the students’ ideas in writing because they can tell prior activities or experiences happened.

Abstract

Enola Holmes 2 movie tells a story about the life of a woman named Enola. In this film, the female character is depicted as an active narrative object and carries the message of feminism. The feminism topic attracted the attention of researchers because, so far, women have been often portrayed only as a passive narrative object and even as the main erotic object in the film. This research is to find out the meaning of the semiotic code regarding feminism at the levels of reality, representation, and ideology. Researchers use a qualitative approach with semiotic analysis based on codes from television, which are divided into three levels: reality, representation, and ideology. The results of the research show the values of feminism at the level of reality through codes of appearance, make-up, dialogue, way of speaking, environment, and behavior. On the levels, representation of feminist values is shown through camera code, characters, actions, conflicts, and dialogue. On an ideological level, the values of feminism represent the close and inseparable relationship between women and nature. Keywords: Representation, Feminism, Film, Semiotic, John Fiske.

Abstract

This study aimed at finding out to what extent spelling bee games improve vocabulary mastery and explore the advantages and disadvantages of spelling bee games. It discussed the implementation of the spelling bee game in English Language Teaching at the Junior High School. This research implemented spelling bee games as one of the ways to improve students’ vocabulary mastery. This study used the Classroom Action Research (CAR) method which was conducted in two cycles. The researcher used three data collection methods, namely observation, questionnaires, and tests. The data for this study were their written test results by answering questions about the vocabulary they had learned. The data was assessed based on the number of words that the students successfully answered. To determine whether the percentage was high or low, the researcher used the scoring criteria. The results of this study serve as references for future research on spelling bee games, such as benefits, drawback, challenges or opportunities in English language teaching especially at junior high school level.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the world experienced by the mentally ill Arthur Fleck of Joker (2019) through phenomenological analysis.This research uses qualitative methods. The authors chose this research based on the phenomenon of Joker related tothe joker's mental illness that contains experience of mental illness to various types ofmental health disorders. We felt excited because of the release of the Joker movie which raised the image of someone who is experiencing mental illness with various descriptions of interesting behaviors. The authors want to understand how the Joker handle the discrimination he experienced in this film. Then, The authors want to know more about the impact of the discrimination towards the Joker, and the factors as to why those who have mental illnesses frequently become a victim of discrimination. We believe that this will push people to be more sensitive, and value and understand the behaviors people may exhibit around them, and to understand the people who experience them and help them.These are why the authors are interested in conductinga study regarding the matter. The results of this research showed evidence of the Joker's methods of handling the negative experiences, the impacts and the factors of the said experiences and rejection in his social environment. Abstract

This research is aim to the grammar problems faced by students in learning simple present tense. The participants of this research were students in Universitas Muhammadiyah Lampung who take intermediate grammar class. The samples consisted of seven participants. They are students who take intermediate grammar class. The data collecting technique of this research used observation and students' task to gather data and employed a descriptive design with qualitative analysis to understand and describe the phenomena being studied. This approach is particularly useful for exploring complex behaviors, attitudes, or experiences in depth. Based on the analysis of questionnaire and students’ assignment indicated that this research found that grammar problems faced by students in learning simple present tense were the use; Third-person singular verbs (-s/-es endings) (33 %), Subject-verb agreement (10%), Negative and question forms (5%), Spelling changes with third-person singular (15%), Use of adverbs of frequency (7%), Incorrect use of time expressions (12%), Confusion with stative verbs (8%).
