Abstract

Taro is a viable source and holds potential as a supplement or substitute for rice/carbohydrates, as well as a raw material for flour production in the food industry. Taro plants possess significant economic value, as nearly all parts of the plant are edible. However, taro processing activities remain limited in terms of product variety, production continuity, target market, and marketing strategy. This programme aimed to enhance the understanding and skills of the partner in cultivating taro in accordance with Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), and to improve their capabilities in processing taro into various commercially viable products, as well as in packaging the resulting products. The activities were carried out at the 'Kita Bisa' Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME), located in Sido Makmur Village, North Sipora Sub-district, Mentawai Islands Regency, from July to November 2024. The methods employed included socialisation and technical assistance, focused on the priority issues identified within the partner MSME. Hands-on practice was also conducted, particularly in taro processing technology and product packaging techniques. The results demonstrated a notable improvement in understanding taro cultivation based on GAP, as well as enhanced skills and knowledge in processing taro into taro flour, taro cookies, and various-flavoured taro crisps. Additionally, there was a significant increase in the partner’s competence in packaging taro-based products. In conclusion, the programme was successfully implemented, resulting in measurable outputs that contributed to improvements in quality, quantity, and overall understanding among MSME members, spanning from cultivation to value-added product development.

Abstract

Complete A common challenge in smallholder beef cattle fattening enterprises is the fluctuation in the availability and quality of forage. Fermented feed technologies, such as complete ration silage, offer a promising solution for ensuring a sustainable supply of nutritious feed. This activity aimed to improve farmers’ knowledge and understanding of the techniques involved in producing high-quality complete ration silage for cattle feed at the Nusa Fauna Padang cattle farm. The programme was conducted at the Nusa Fauna Padang farm and involved lecturers and students from Andalas University, as well as local cattle farmers. The methods employed included preparatory stages, dissemination through participatory extension sessions, and an evaluation of the activity. Farmers were introduced to various feed ingredients such as rice straw, green forage, and molasses, as well as proper fermentation techniques to produce high-quality silage. The results showed a significant improvement in farmers’ knowledge and understanding regarding the production of complete ration silage. The utilization of this silage not only enhanced cattle productivity at the fattening farm but also reduced dependency on seasonal fresh forage and increased feed efficiency. As such, the complete ration silage technology presents a long-term solution for ensuring the availability of nutritious, stable, and durable feed. In conclusion, this educational activity successfully enhanced farmers’ capacity and opened up opportunities for the development of locally based feed technologies. It is recommended that such extension programmers be continued with follow-up assistance to ensure the effective implementation of silage production by farmers.

Abstract

Simpang Tanjung Nan Ampek Village, located in the Danau Kembar Subdistrict of Solok Regency, is one of the key potato-producing areas. Potato production in Solok Regency has reached 28,939 tonnes per hectare (BPS, 2023). To date, potato cultivation in this region has been heavily dependent on synthetic fertilisers and high levels of pesticide use, which can have detrimental effects on both biotic and abiotic components of the environment. One viable solution to mitigate these impacts is the application of local microorganisms, particularly Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR), which are well-known for their ability to enhance nutrient availability, promote plant growth, and improve overall plant health. This community engagement programme aimed to increase farmers’ knowledge regarding the role of PGPR in enhancing potato growth and productivity. The activity was conducted in Simpang Tanjung Nan Ampek Village, Danau Kembar Subdistrict, Solok Regency, in February 2025. The programme employed three main methods: (1) socialisation activities to raise awareness of the functions and benefits of PGPR, (2) training sessions on PGPR propagation techniques, and (3) the practical application of PGPR on potato crops. The programme yielded positive outcomes. Farmers gained a better understanding of the benefits of PGPR, as well as the skills required for its propagation and application on potato plants. The educational and hands-on approaches used in the programme significantly improved the farmers’ knowledge and competence in implementing PGPR.

Abstract

This activity aims to analyze the effectiveness of eco-enzyme production training as an effort to manage organic waste at SMA Negeri 1 Sei Rampah, as well as to evaluate the improvement of participants' knowledge and skills in utilizing organic waste into environmentally friendly value-added products. The activity method employed active learning through socialization, demonstration, and hands-on practice (learning by doing) conducted over 7 hours involving 30 participants consisting of 15 teachers and 15 students. The activity was carried out in four main stages: socialization on organic waste management and eco-enzyme benefits, demonstration of eco-enzyme production with a material ratio of 1:3:10 (brown sugar: organic waste: water), hands-on practice of eco-enzyme production by 6 participant groups, and evaluation using pre-test and post-test. The results showed a significant improvement in participants' understanding with an average increase of 60%, where the highest improvement was observed in eco-enzyme production skills reaching 66.6%. Participant satisfaction reached 92.6% in good to excellent categories, and all groups successfully produced eco-enzyme with good quality (average score of 3.4 out of 4.0) totaling 12 liters. The conclusion of this activity is that eco-enzyme production training proved effective in enhancing knowledge and skills in organic waste management, building environmental awareness, and has the potential to become a sustainable program that can be replicated in other schools to support zero waste movements based on school communities.

Abstract

Indonesia's food and beverage industry continues to grow rapidly, especially for value-added products such as functional foods. Probiotic beverages, as a type of functional food, hold tremendous market potential. This activity is also expected to foster an entrepreneurial spirit among students through the development of innovative products that have high market potential. The method of implementing Campus Intellectual Product Business Development (UPIK) activities is carried out at the IbIKK entrepreneurship unit, Department of Agricultural Technology, Riau University. The activities were carried out from July to October 2024. The implementation of the programme was divided into six sequential main stages: (1) preparation and planning, including the initial product formulation design and the development of activity instruments; (2) a survey of market needs and preferences; (3) product formulation development and application; (4) intensive training and production demonstrations for the partners; (5) assistance in marketing strategies, packaging design, and product evaluation; and (6) final monitoring and evaluation. Partners (IbIKK Unit) produce and market functional foods in the form of Yoghurt, Kefir, and Kombucha in the form of contemporary drinks. The implementation team conducted monitoring and evaluation in the form of questionnaires to consumers (80 people) who were randomly selected. Based on this activity, it was concluded that the development of probiotic functional drinks at Riau University has great potential thanks to healthy lifestyle awareness and a broad market, but its success requires product innovation, campus support, and a mature strategy to overcome competition and limited resources.

Abstract

Waste that is not managed correctly can pollute the environment, endanger public health, and increase the risk of flooding, especially in flood-prone areas such as Batu Busuk Village, Lambung Bukit Village, Padang City. Organic waste processing through the manufacture of eco-enzymes is an alternative environmentally friendly solution that the community can carry out independently. This activity aims to improve community knowledge and skills in managing organic waste through training in making eco-enzymes to reduce the risk of waste accumulation and flooding. This activity method uses a participatory approach involving the community through counseling, discussions, and direct practice of making eco-enzymes. The activity was carried out in November 2024. Knowledge evaluation was carried out through pre-tests and post-tests, with statistical analysis to measure the effectiveness of the activity. The statistical test results showed a significant increase in community knowledge after the counseling activity, with a p-value of 0.001. The community could also practice making eco-enzymes independently, producing environmentally friendly products from household organic waste. In conclusion, this activity has increased community knowledge and skills in managing organic waste. Sustainable eco-enzyme production can reduce waste volume, prevent accumulation, and reduce the risk of flooding and environmental pollution. Therefore, local governments are advised to support eco-enzyme training, provide supporting facilities, and integrate community-based waste management into environmental management policies.

Abstract

The aim of this initiative was to enhance the knowledge, skills, and independence of ruminant farmers in utilising local feed resources through training on the production of Urea Molasses Blocks (UMB) as a nutritious, cost-effective, and easily applicable feed supplement for smallholder livestock systems. The activity was conducted in Nagari Pangian, Lintau Buo Sub-district, Tanah Datar Regency, West Sumatra Province. This location was selected due to its relatively high population of ruminant livestock, yet limited access to quality feed. The methods applied included interactive lectures on the fundamentals of nutrition and the benefits of UMB, demonstrations of UMB production techniques, and hands-on practice by participants using locally available ingredients. A total of 30 active farmers participated, selected through coordination with local village authorities. Evaluation was carried out using pre- and post-tests to measure knowledge improvement, as well as a survey to assess participants’ responses and readiness to adopt the technology. The results showed that the average knowledge score increased from 55.3 to 83.7 after the training. Furthermore, 87% of participants expressed readiness to independently produce and utilise UMB. Most participants also reported that ingredients such as molasses, rice bran, and urea were easily accessible in their area. In conclusion, the activity proved effective in building farmer capacity, promoting the use of local potential, and supporting the development of locally based feed technologies for ruminant livestock in rural areas.

Abstract

This activity aims to introduce innovations in functional snacks based on local herbs and to enhance the knowledge and skills of the community in processing family medicinal plants, particularly temulawak (Curcuma xanthorrhiza) and ginger (Zingiber officinale), into healthy, practical, and economically valuable gummy products. The background of this activity lies in the increasing public demand for functional foods in the post-Covid-19 era, alongside the low interest in consuming herbs in traditional forms, which are often considered bitter and impractical. The methods applied included preparation (site survey, permits, and equipment), educational sessions on the importance of natural immunomodulators, and direct demonstrations of making herbal gummy candies involving the community of Nagari Sipinang, Palembayan District, Agam Regency. Evaluation was conducted through pre-tests and post-tests using questionnaires to measure participants’ improvement in understanding. The results showed a significant increase in community health literacy, from 40% to 85% of participants who understood the benefits and techniques of making herbal gummies. Enthusiasm was evident through active participation in mixing ingredients to molding, with some participants even expressing interest in reproducing the gummies at home. In addition to health benefits, this activity also opened opportunities for local herbal-based businesses, supported by abundant raw materials and simple production processes. In conclusion, the demonstration of making temulawak and ginger gummies was effective in improving community knowledge and skills, while simultaneously encouraging the development of MSMEs based on functional foods. Going forward, continuous mentoring, provision of simple equipment.

Abstract

Nagari Sikabu, located in Padang Pariaman Regency, is an agrarian area with strong potential in corn production as its leading agricultural commodity. However, the utilization of corn has largely been limited to sales in raw form, resulting in relatively low economic value for the local community. This condition indicates a gap between abundant natural resources and the community’s capacity to transform them into value added products. Therefore, this community service program was designed to empower local residents through a sustainable business incubation model for corn based products using a participatory approach. The methods applied included field observations, participatory interviews, Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), and SWOT analysis to map the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in developing processed corn products. The results identified that derivative products such as corn chips, corn emping, and corn brownies have strong prospects to become local flagship products. Training sessions and workshops successfully improved community skills by 42%, particularly in food processing techniques, packaging, pricing, and digital marketing. Furthermore, the program facilitated the establishment of a Community Business Group (Kelompok Usaha Bersama/KUB) as an institutional platform for collective business development and local economic strengthening. In conclusion, the corn based business incubation program proved effective in enhancing community capacity, strengthening business institutions, and opening new entrepreneurial opportunities in Nagari Sikabu. For sustainability, continuous assistance is required in product legalization, innovative packaging technology, and integration with digital marketing channels so that processed corn products can penetrate wider markets and contribute to local economic independence.

Abstract

This community service program aimed to empower oil palm farmers in Sialang Sakti Village, Siak Regency, by utilizing oil palm fronds as raw material for vermicompost production to support sustainable agriculture and the implementation of the Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) standards. The main problem faced by the partner group was the accumulation of unutilized frond waste and the farmers’ limited knowledge of organic waste management. The program was conducted from July 27 to August 23, 2024, involving members of the Manunggal Sakti Farmers Group and student volunteers. The activities included socialization, technical training on vermicomposting, media maintenance and observation, harvesting and packaging of vermicompost, and field application on oil palm plantations. Data were collected through direct observation, laboratory analysis, and community satisfaction surveys conducted before and after the program using questionnaires. The results indicated a significant improvement in farmers’ knowledge and skills in producing and applying vermicompost. The final product exhibited desirable characteristics dark color, earthy odor, crumbly texture, and nutrient content meeting organic fertilizer standards. The program generated direct benefits by reducing palm frond waste and enhancing farmers’ awareness of organic waste utilization. In conclusion, the program successfully achieved its objectives in empowering the local community and improving waste management capacity. Although challenges such as limited time and production facilities were encountered, the strong enthusiasm of participants ensured the program’s sustainability through plans to establish a farmer-based vermicompost business unit.
