Abstract

The purpose of this community service activity is to assist the recovery of social activities and address the crisis of electricity and clean water following the flash floods in Pesisir Selatan Regency, particularly in Kampung Langgai and Barung-Barung Balantai Health Center, which were the most severely affected areas. The methods employed included conducting a needs assessment survey of the affected communities, procuring and installing a 5.5 kW generator set at Nurul Wahidah Mosque as a social center, distributing ten solar-powered lamps to residents’ homes, and rehabilitating the clean water system at the health center by replacing the water pump and installing new piping networks from the ring well and Pamsimas sources. Additionally, training was provided on the operation and maintenance of electrical equipment, along with socialization on the importance of clean water to prevent post-flood diseases. The results demonstrated a significant improvement in access to electricity and clean water in the affected areas. The mosque resumed its function as a center for social activities, homes and roads received adequate lighting, and health services at the health center became fully operational again. The conclusion of this activity is that appropriate technology-based interventions, such as the provision of generator sets, solar lamps, and water filtration system repairs, are effective in supporting post-disaster recovery and enhancing community resilience. The sustainability of the program can be strengthened through regular training and cross-sector collaboration to build resilient infrastructure in disaster-prone areas.

Abstract

Women play a strategic role in the agricultural sector, particularly in supporting food security and household economies. However, limited access to agricultural technologies and low levels of digital literacy remain significant barriers to the capacity development of Women Farmer Groups (KWT). This community engagement programme aimed to empower the Jirak Serumpun Women Farmer Group in Mata Air Sub-district through the integration of aquaponic systems and digital marketing. The activities were conducted from July to September 2024 in Mata Air, South Padang District, Padang City, West Sumatra, involving 20 group members. The programme consisted of technical training in aquaponics cultivation, digital marketing workshops using social media platforms, and basic bookkeeping training using Microsoft Excel. The outcomes revealed that 85% of participants were able to independently assemble and manage aquaponic systems; a dedicated social media account was successfully activated for promotional purposes; and the group began implementing digital financial records. Moreover, the adoption of aquaponics led to a 35% increase in vegetable production and a 22% rise in average income within three months after training. This initiative not only enhanced production capacity and marketing efficiency but also reinforced women's economic autonomy at the community level. The empowerment model, based on appropriate technology and digital marketing, proved effective as a sustainable agricultural development strategy that is responsive to women's roles.

Abstract

The aim of this activity is to assist in the digitalization of marketing for the MSME Susi Seprai and Bed Cover in Padang City through the creation and training in the use of an e-commerce website. This MSME faced declining sales due to the COVID-19 pandemic, requiring a strategy to expand market reach. The methodology used consisted of three main stages. First, identifying the partner’s needs through direct interviews with the business owner to understand the challenges and specific needs related to digital marketing. Second, creating an e-commerce website that functions as a product catalog with features such as online payment, product rating, and reviews. The website design was customized to be responsive and user-friendly for the owner, who has limited experience with technology. Third, training was conducted at the business location, covering content management, product uploads, payment system setup, and comment moderation. Despite the website’s completion and the training provided, its usage remains suboptimal. Key challenges include limited workforce, the advanced age of the owner, and a lack of experience in managing digital technologies. However, the website has the potential to support marketing efforts, expand market reach, and improve product visibility. The conclusion is that the success of utilizing the website depends on increasing the owner’s capacity and confidence in managing digital technology independently. Therefore, further intensive assistance is recommended, along with digital promotion through social media and search engine optimization (SEO) to improve marketing effectiveness and broaden the MSME’s market reach.

Abstract

This activity was carried out in Nagari Cupak, Solok Regency, where local farmers still use traditional tools and manual labor to clean the husks from rice. This manual process not only takes a long time but is also inefficient in separating high-quality rice grains from empty ones. Rice is the primary agricultural product and staple food of the Indonesian people, so the quality of the rice harvest significantly impacts farmers' well-being and food security. However, rice harvests are often unsatisfactory due to the presence of empty grains that must be manually separated by farmers. Therefore, the community service team provided a solution in the form of an electric rice separator to improve work efficiency and harvest quality. This rice separator is designed to automatically separate filled and high-quality grains from empty or imperfect grains. This activity aims to design and implement a rice separator machine that can help farmers in Nagari Cupak optimize their harvest yields. The methods used include field surveys, design, training, and monitoring and evaluation. The field survey involved the team conducting direct observations of farmers regarding the actual conditions they face, designing the machine according to farmers' needs, and then conducting training for farmers on how to use the rice separator machine and monitoring the machine. The results of the tool testing showed that it could separate rice at a capacity of up to 10 kg per minute, a significant increase compared to the manual method, which could only process around 6 kg per minute.

Abstract

Banda Langik Women Farmers Group (KWT Banda Langik) is an active women-led farming group in Padang City, established based on shared goals, harmony, and a spirit of collaboration in optimizing the use of agricultural resources. The group owns idle land and unused home yards that have not been utilized optimally. Through this community service activity, Monthong durian seedlings were planted to transform inactive land into productive economic assets while also providing the group with knowledge on durian cultivation. This activity was carried out from May to September 2023 using survey, discussion, and demonstration methods for planting Monthong durian on KWT Banda Langik's land. The seedlings were sourced from the Horticultural Plant Seed Center (Balai Benih Induk Tanaman Hortikultura) located on Jalan Pertanian, Lubuk Minturun, Kota Padang with a quality rating of 80%. One hundred twenty seedlings were distributed to the group-5 were planted on the group's shared land. At the same time, the remaining 115 were given to individual members, each receiving 10 seedlings to plant in their home yards or on personal land. Monthong durian is categorized as an early-bearing plant with a relatively short trunk height of 4–5 meters, which offers a significant advantage in harvest time compared to local durian varieties. The cultivation of Monthong durian, as a form of community empowerment, has successfully enhanced the understanding and skills of the KWT members in managing land effectively by planting high-economic-value crops that are also popular among the public.

Abstract

Spices have long been an integral part of human life, playing a vital role as traditional medicine, culinary ingredients, and components in cosmetics. Indonesia, particularly within the Southeast Asian region, is regarded as a global hub for high-quality spices. One such spice-rich area is Nagari Koto Anau, located in Solok Regency, known for its production of cloves and cinnamon. However, this significant potential has yet to be fully harnessed by local farmers due to limited processing technology—particularly the lack of spice grinding machines. As a result, farmers are only able to sell their spices in raw form at low market value, which adversely affects their income. To address this issue, the design and implementation of a spice grinding machine that can be operated directly by farmers is essential. The aim of this activity is to accelerate the spice processing workflow, improve work efficiency, and enhance the added value of spice products at the local level. The programme was carried out in Nagari Koto Anau, Solok Regency, West Sumatra Province. The methods employed included interviews, equipment design, and training on the use of the spice grinding machine. Interviews involved discussions with farmers to identify their problems and offer practical solutions, followed by designing the machine based on their specific needs. The training method included a hands-on demonstration on how to operate the spice grinder. The results showed that the spices processed using the grinder became fine and evenly ground, with a production output of up to 20 kilograms.
