Abstract

Rice husk waste is a major by-product of rice milling that is abundant in agricultural areas such as Simpang Kubu Village, Kampar Regency, and is often burned or discarded, causing environmental pollution. This community service program aimed to enhance local knowledge, skills, and awareness in processing rice husk waste into biochar as an eco-friendly and economically valuable soil amendment. The activity was carried out in August–September 2025 using the Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) approach, involving 31 participants from farmer groups, housewives, and village officials. The methods included socialization, hands-on training in biochar production using a 208-liter rotary drum pyrolizer, and evaluation through pre- and post-tests. The results showed a significant increase in participants’ knowledge, from an average of 31% before training to 87.5% after training, with 92.9% expressing willingness to produce biochar and 100% interested in applying it to their farms. These findings indicate that an educational and participatory approach effectively improves community behavior and self-reliance in agricultural waste management. In conclusion, this program successfully strengthened community capacity to convert rice husk waste into useful products while promoting sustainable agriculture and rural economic development. The main challenges identified were limited production tools and participants’ confidence in assessing biochar quality; therefore, continued mentoring is needed to ensure independent and sustainable implementation of the technology.

Abstract

Micro, small, and medium-sized food enterprises in Indonesia face persistent challenges related to productivity and digitalization, as many still rely on manual processing and non-digital record-keeping, resulting in low efficiency and competitiveness. This condition is also evident in the Rendang Bu Pit MSME in Pasaman Barat, which operates with traditional equipment and basic bookkeeping. This community engagement program aimed to enhance production capacity and managerial efficiency through equipment modernization and digital digitization. A participatory action approach was employed, consisting of problem identification, technology transfer, production management training, implementation of semi-automated equipment, development of a spreadsheet-based digital dashboard, and continuous mentoring. Evaluation was performed using a before–after comparison of production performance. The results showed substantial efficiency improvements: coconut milk extraction decreased from ±60 minutes to ±15 minutes (75% efficiency gain); beef rendang cooking time decreased from ±6 hours to ±3.5 hours (40%); and clam rendang from ±4 hours to ±2.5 hours (37%). The use of a vacuum sealer increased packaging efficiency by up to 50% while extending product shelf life. The digital dashboard enabled integrated and real-time recording of raw materials, production output, sales, and profit/loss, thereby supporting data-driven decision-making. This program demonstrates novelty through the integration of semi-automated processing technology with an end-to-end digital system at the MSME scale, and its significance lies in strengthening digital transformation among food-sector MSMEs. The model is highly replicable for similar businesses to improve productivity, quality consistency, and competitiveness of the rendang industry at local and regional levels.

Abstract

Niranta is a micro palm sugar processing business in Padang with export potential and high-quality products. However, the business faces challenges with limited shelf life, especially for liquid palm sugar which deteriorates within less than 6 months after opening due to microbial growth and physicochemical changes. This Community Service Program was designed to extend the shelf life of both powdered and liquid palm sugar products through scientific formulation optimization, improved preservation techniques, discussion about appropriate packaging solutions, and adherence to Good Manufacturing Practices. The 8-month program consisted of socialization sessions, hands-on training, technology transfer, and continuous mentoring focused on preservation methods, hygiene standards, and GMP implementation. Key interventions included the addition of sodium benzoate as a preservative in liquid palm sugar, process control using sterilization for packaging, and Good Manufacturing Practices mentoring collaboration with National Agency of Food and Drug Administration (BPOM) Padang. Real-time shelf-life testing was conducted on treated products for over 6 months post-opening. Preliminary results demonstrate significant improvement: liquid palm sugar supplemented with 0.1 % sodium benzoate remained microbiologically and organoleptically stable beyond 6 months. These findings confirm the effectiveness of combined preservation and process control strategies. To ensure long-term sustainability, recommendations include formal collaboration with the National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BPOM) for GMP certification, advanced training for workers, and ongoing accelerated and real-time stability studies.

Abstract

Padukuhan Dukuh, located in Imogiri Subdistrict, Bantul Regency, Indonesia, is experiencing critical waste management challenges, particularly after the permanent closure of the Piyungan Regional Final Disposal Site on May 1, 2024. Bantul generated approximately 434.05 tons of waste per day in 2024, yet only around 13% was managed by the provincial government. In response, Imogiri Village initiated decentralized, community-based waste management, including the establishment of KSM Sido Resik in Padukuhan Dukuh. However, limited technological capacity and weak managerial practices have constrained the quality and quantity of organic and inorganic waste processing. This study aims to strengthen community-based waste management through the adoption of appropriate technology and capacity-building interventions. A participatory, community-based approach was implemented over six months, consisting of socialization, hands-on training, technology installation (organic waste chopper and plastic shredder), and continuous mentoring. Evaluation was conducted using pre–posttests, production monitoring, and structured interviews. Results show that composting duration decreased from ±60 days to approximately 30 days, with production capacity increasing from 10 kg to 35 kg per two-month cycle. Plastic waste value increased from IDR 1,500/kg to IDR 5,500/kg after shredding. Community income rose from IDR 500,000/month to over IDR 1,500,000–2,000,000/month. Skill assessments indicate up to a 80% improvement in technical and managerial competencies. The findings demonstrate that integrating appropriate technology with community-driven management effectively enhances waste valorization, supports circular economy practices, and strengthens local socio-economic and environmental resilience.

Abstract

Organic household and fish waste management remains a significant environmental challenge in coastal communities, where inadequate waste treatment contributes to environmental pollution and the underutilization of valuable organic resources. Although EM4-based composting and Black Soldier Fly (BSF; Hermetia illucens) bioconversion have been widely adopted as separate waste management technologies, their integration into a community-based waste management system has rarely been implemented or systematically documented in Indonesian coastal communities. This program aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of integrating EM4-based composting with BSF cultivation in enhancing community capacity and promoting sustainable organic waste management at the Sajameh Waste Bank in Bungus, Padang, Indonesia. The program adopted a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach using a one-group pretest-posttest design involving 30 participants. Program activities included needs assessment, community education, hands-on training in composting and BSF cultivation, continuous mentoring, and evaluation through questionnaires, direct observation, and comparative analyses of pretest and posttest scores. The program increased participants' knowledge by 65%, achieved an 80% community participation rate, produced approximately 50 kg of compost per month during the initial implementation phase, and generated strong interest in BSF cultivation among 70% of participants. In addition, an independent community group was established to sustain waste management activities beyond the program period. These findings demonstrate that integrating EM4-based composting with BSF bioconversion effectively enhances community capacity while supporting environmentally sustainable organic waste management. This integrated community-based approach offers a practical and potentially scalable model for improving organic waste utilization and advancing sustainable waste management practices in coastal communities.
