Abstract

The escalating global biodiversity crisis underscores the critical need for effective educational strategies that promote environmental awareness and competencies. This research and development study addresses this imperative by designing and evaluating "BioDiv Web," an innovative e-learning platform for biodiversity education. The platform synergistically integrates the Structured Project-Based Learning (SPjBL) model with a Citizen Science Project (CSP) approach to create an authentic and scaffolded learning environment. Developed using the Lee and Owens model, the product was validated by experts and deemed highly valid (e.g., material validation: 100%) and practical (average score: 92%) based on trials with students. A quasi-experimental study involving 70 tenth-grade students was conducted to assess its effectiveness. The experimental group exhibited significantly higher learning gains compared to the control group. The results demonstrated moderate effectiveness, with normalized gain scores of 0.68 for critical thinking skills and 0.65 for environmental literacy. One-way ANCOVA analysis confirmed that these improvements were statistically significant (p < 0.001). The findings affirm that the BioDiv Web platform is a robust, practical, and effective digital tool for enhancing senior high school students' critical cognitive and affective learning outcomes in biodiversity education.

Abstract

The use of this medium is expected to help students better understand and retain information about leaves, thereby contributing to improved learning outcomes in biology as a whole. This study aims to develop an effective Augmented Reality (AR)-based flashcard learning medium for the topic of leaf types. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model, which includes the stages of Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The research subjects consisted of 25 biology education students who had completed the Plant Morphology course, selected through a purposive sampling technique. The validation results indicated that the AR flashcard learning medium demonstrated a very high level of feasibility. Media expert validation obtained a score of 89.3%, while material expert validation yielded a score of 90%, both categorized as “highly feasible.” Furthermore, the evaluation based on educators’ responses achieved a score of 100%, also classified as “highly feasible.” These findings suggest that the AR-based flashcard learning medium received highly positive responses and proved effective in enhancing students’ interest and motivation in learning plant morphology.

Abstract

Research that discusses and examines the role of Telegram in developing science process skills (SPS) in low plant botany (LPB) learning in depth is still minimal. Therefore, the research aims to determine the level of SPS of students in LPB online learning through Telegram. The research method used a quantitative descriptive study of students' SPS levels after LPB learning through Telegram. The research was conducted with 60 students, using a questionnaire as the research instrument, followed by quantitative analysis. Results showed that students had a deep understanding and an adequate level of SPS in LPB online learning through Telegram, as evidenced by the average SPS score of 72.91% in the high category. Thus, Telegram has been proven to help develop students' SPS in LPB online learning. The study provides implications for educators by utilizing Telegram as a platform for online learning methods to develop students' SPS skills.

Abstract

Based on national and international assessments, Indonesian students' higher-order thinking is inadequate, highlighting the need for effective learning. This study aimed to explore the impact of discussion of a socio-scientific issue on the development of higher-order thinking related to the concept of viruses. A quasi-experimental design used a nonequivalent pretest and posttest control group framework. The experimental group engaged in a socioscientific issue discussion model comprising the stages of Polemic, Exploration, Action, and Conclusion (PEAK). In contrast, the control group was instructed with a constructivist learning approach with discussion, students' presentations, and teacher explanations. The experimental group included 26 males and 46 females, while the control group had 30 males and 41 females. The findings showed that the experimental group's average pretest score was 55.1, while the control group's was 60,1. After the intervention, the experimental group achieved a posttest average of 73,3, compared to 69 for the control group. The N-gain test results demonstrated higher average gain in the experimental group (x-gain 0,5) than the control group (x-gain 0,2). Additionally, the Mann-Whitney U test indicated a significant effect of the socioscientific issue discussion learning model on students' HOTS. This model offers a promising alternative to enhance students' high-level thinking.

Abstract

Lactic acid (LAB) is a bacteria involved in food fermentation and can be used as a probiotic to provide health benefits for those who consume it. This research aims to bring innovation and added value, and improve the community's utilization of probiotics (LAB) from husks and black rice from Toraja. The method used is collecting and processing samples, isolation and purification of LAB, microscopic and macroscopic identification, testing the activity/potential of LAB (Kirby Bauer), and molecular identification of 16S rRNA (sequencing). This study has confirmed that fermented rice has Lactococcus taiwanensis type lactic acid bacteria, while fermented husk is not a type of lactic acid bacteria. Lactococcus taiwanensis bacteria have probiotic potential and can produce antibacterial substances.

Abstract

Creative thinking is a key 21st-century skill that must be fostered in science education, particularly in ecology, which demands conceptual understanding and contextual problem solving. However, classroom learning often relies on conventional methods that limit student engagement and creativity. This study examines the effect of quantum learning strategies on improving students’ creative thinking skills in ecology. Quantum learning was selected for its holistic approach that integrates emotional, intellectual, and social dimensions, potentially optimizing creative stimulation. The research employed a quasi-experimental design with a pretest–posttest control group. Participants were 10th-grade students at SMA Negeri 11 Medan, divided into experimental and control groups. Data were collected using ecology-based creative thinking tests. The findings revealed a significant improvement in the creative thinking abilities of students in the experimental group compared to those in the control group. These results demonstrate that quantum learning effectively enhances students’ creativity in ecological learning contexts. The study suggests that adopting quantum learning strategies can help educators design more engaging and innovative learning environments aligned with 21st-century educational demands.

Abstract

The forest softshell turtle (Dogania subplana) is a species increasingly threatened by habitat destruction and overexploitation. This study aims to identify the acclimatization process of D. subplana in an artificial environment, specifically, an aquarium at the Turtle Learning Center (TLC). The research was conducted over 30 days from July to August 2024. Observations were made on daily behavior, body temperature, and health condition, individual biometric measurements, and environmental (abiotic) parameters. The results showed that daily behaviors such as feeding, basking, and hiding occurred regularly, indicating the species' ability to adapt to a new environment. The turtles experienced an increase in body weight, while growth in carapace length and width was very slow. The body temperature of D. subplana varied in accordance with the surrounding environmental temperature, reflecting its dependence on ambient conditions. Some individuals experienced minor health issues, such as fungal infections, but the majority remained active and healthy. Environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, pH, dissolved oxygen, total dissolved solids, and light intensity were within ranges conducive to acclimatization. These findings suggest that the aquarium at the TLC is quite effective as an ex situ conservation facility in supporting the adaptation process of D. subplana  outside its natural habitat.

Abstract

The people of Emparu Baru Village still maintain local wisdom, including the traditional use of herbs and spices as cooking spices. However, this local wisdom is still passed down orally and has not been documented in writing. This study aims to identify and document the diversity of spice plants used by the Dayak Desa community in Emparu Baru Village, Dedai District, Sintang Regency. The research employed a qualitative descriptive method with an ethnobotanical approach. The results show that the Dayak Desa people possess extensive knowledge of various types of local spice plants, including rhizomes, leaves, tubers, fruits, seeds, and others. This traditional knowledge not only plays an important role in maintaining the resilience of local species but also holds great potential to be developed as a valuable source of information for efforts to conserve plant biodiversity. Based on the ethnobotanical study of spice plants, it can be concluded that there are 42 plant species from 25 families used as spices for cooking. These spices are derived from various plant parts, including fruits, stems, seeds, flowers, leaves, young leaves, bark, rhizomes, tubers, bulbs, and shoots.

Abstract

This study highlights the importance of developing 21st-century competencies, particularly students’ abilities to explain scientific phenomena, design investigations, and interpret data and evidence. The topic of Protists was chosen due to its high diversity and complexity, which often makes it difficult for students to understand, requiring a learning strategy that emphasizes active exploration and concept discovery. The study aimed to examine the effect of the Discovery Learning model on students’ scientific literacy in biology. A quasi-experimental pretest–posttest control group design was employed with two purposively selected tenth-grade classes in a senior high school. The experimental class (n = 20) used the Discovery Learning model, while the control class (n = 20) received conventional instruction. A scientific literacy test based on PISA indicators was used as the instrument. Results showed the experimental class’s mean score increased from 36.33 to 83.33, with an N-Gain of 0.70 (high category). Normality (p > 0.05) and homogeneity (p > 0.05) assumptions were met, and One-Way ANOVA (p < 0.05) indicated a significant difference, suggesting that Discovery Learning effectively improves students’ scientific literacy through active exploration, data analysis, and concept discovery.

Abstract

Creativity is an essential 21st-century skill that students must develop to solve real-life scientific and environmental problems. This study aims to determine the effect of the STEM-Socio Scientific Issues learning model on students' creativity in the concept of organic waste management. Students' creativity is measured based on four indicators according to Torrance, namely fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration. This study uses a quasi-experimental method with a non-equivalent control group design. The research subjects consist of two classes at Muhammadiyah High School in Sukabumi City. Data were collected through creativity tests in the form of pretest and posttest essay questions that had been validated and reliability-tested. The results showed that the STEM-SSI learning model significantly improved students' creativity, particularly in the aspects of fluency (N-Gain 0.4031), flexibility (0.3029), and originality (0.3017), with a moderate category. However, on the elaboration indicator, the control class achieved a slightly higher N-Gain score (0.3574) compared to the experimental class (0.3396), indicating that this aspect has not developed optimally in STEM-SSI learning. Nevertheless, since three out of four creativity indicators showed significant improvement in the experimental class, it can be concluded that STEM-SSI learning can enhance students' creativity, particularly in terms of fluency, flexibility, and originality.
