Abstract

Horongkuli Village, Toari District, Kolaka Regency is known as a village that has many coconut trees and is also a producer of Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) in Southeast Sulawesi. However, in recent years, the production of coconuts into VCO has been hampered because it is not balanced with effective production and good marketing, so that people have switched to other jobs even though the natural resources of coconuts in the village are very abundant. This study aims to increase public understanding of the potential for coconut production while fostering small-scale industries regarding VCO production. This research is a community service research using a descriptive qualitative research method, namely by providing counseling and coaching to the people of Horongkuli village. The results of the study show that through intensive training and ongoing support, residents have improved their VCO and cooking oil production capabilities, as well as their marketing strategies. This initiative has raised awareness of the importance of home industries, encouraging local entrepreneurs to utilize the abundant coconut resources available to them. Ultimately, this program has the potential to strengthen the local economy, improve farmers' livelihoods, and contribute to sustainable agricultural practices, creating a more resilient and prosperous environment for coconut farmers in the area.

Abstract

Local cultural literacy with character is currently lacking in society so that it does not describe and reflect the area where a region is located. This is because the low literacy culture of Indonesian society today has an impact on the low interest in reading and writing in society. This condition is also influenced by the limited number of reading parks or village libraries, which is only 3.06%. A different thing was found in Tapak Gedung which does not yet have a village library so that literacy activities in reading and writing there are still limited. For this reason, this community service activity aims to describe and reveal the tendency of the community's interest in reading and writing, train the community in writing in the community so that they can foster their interest in reading and writing, compile literacy drafts in identifying folk tales and poetry, and describe responses to reflections on activities that have been carried out to provide input and action on the literacy village model activities of the reading corner that has been carried out. The community service method used is Tabatage Unib (Tapak Gedung Reading Park, University of Bengkulu) APTE Model (Needs Analysis, Training, Action, and Evaluation). The community service team in this case uses this model as a stage of service. Literacy reading and writing that is developed, namely reading and telling stories and writing village history/potential local wisdom in the form of fiction. The community is more dominant in telling stories than reading and is no longer illiterate. The tendency of existing folklore is in the form of tourist attractions, myths, folklore, typonyms, history, and events in society. Training and guidance can maximize the APTE model independently and in groups that are actively followed by participants. There needs to be printed and non-printed reading materials with a good internet connection network. The output of community service activities is documented in the form of recordings published on YouTube and publication of articles in the Sinta 5 journal.

Abstract

This community service activity was carried out in Kuala Tungkal, Tanjung Jabung Barat Regency, Jambi Province, to address the challenges faced by fishermen in identifying potential fishing grounds. The primary focus was creating a map of potential fishing grounds based on oceanographic data to enhance the efficiency and productivity of fishermen. The methods included collecting oceanographic data, satellite imagery, and performing geospatial analysis using ArcGIS 10.8 software to predict and map the potential fishing grounds. Training sessions were held to teach fishermen how to use GPS and fishing ground maps, enabling them to predict and navigate fishing locations more effectively. This activity was carried out by involving several participations; fishermen, local government, and Fisheries Service of Tanjung Jabung Barat Regency. The map produced by the team depicts strategic locations in the waters of Kuala Tungkal (FMA 711) based on sea surface temperature (SST) and chlorophyll-a indicators. There are 105,633 potential fishing points being identified in this area. SST values range from 28.2°C to 32°C, and chlorophyll-a values range from 0.2 mg/m³ to 2 mg/m³.  The training outcomes demonstrated that most fishermen could effectively use GPS and the fishing ground map during fishing operations. The active participation of fishermen and the provision of technology training is pivotal in the program’s success. Consequently, the utilization of potential fishing ground maps based on oceanographic data has the potential to enhance fishermen's performance and contribute to sustainable fisheries resource management in the FMA 711 area.
