Abstract

Global interest in learning the Indonesian language continues to increase; however, the availability of relevant and contextualized BIPA (Bahasa Indonesia for Foreign Speakers) teaching materials remains limited. Existing materials have not yet fully developed learners’ communicative competence or integrated Indonesia’s social and cultural contexts in depth. This study aims to develop socially and culturally based BIPA teaching materials to enhance foreign learners’ speaking skills through the social contexts of Indonesian society. The research employs the 4D development model (Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate), adapted only to the first three stages: define, design, and develop. The definestage includes a needs analysis, a review of the BIPA Graduate Competency Standards (SKL), and an exploration of relevant Indonesian socio-cultural themes. The design stage focuses on structuring content, learning activities, and teaching strategies that encourage social interaction and communicative language use. The develop stage produces a prototype of socially and culturally based teaching materials that have been conceptually organized and are ready for expert validation and further testing in subsequent research. Data were collected through documentation studies and literature reviews. The results show that the designed materials, consisting of ten thematic units—including Natural Phenomena, Indonesian Culture, Social Media, Environment, and Social Issues—are theoretically aligned with the BIPA SKL and the CEFR framework. The developed product reflects the richness of Indonesia’s language and culture and has the potential to strengthen the communicative and intercultural competence of BIPA learners.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the limited effectiveness of poetry appreciation teaching materials, which remain largely theoretical and fail to actively engage students in interpreting and expressing the aesthetic meaning of poetry. The purpose of this research is to develop poetry appreciation teaching materials based on the Interpretation, Demonstration, and Evaluation (IDE) technique that are applicable, interactive, and contextual for students of the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program, Faculty of Language and Arts, Universitas Negeri Jakarta. The research employed a Research and Development (RnD) method using the ADDIE model, which includes needs analysis through questionnaires and interviews, design, and draft preparation of the teaching materials. The results show that 90% of respondents support the implementation of the IDE technique, as it enhances students’ understanding, aesthetic sensitivity, and expressive skills in poetry appreciation.

Abstract

This study aims to uncover connotative meanings as elements that construct the dramatization in the Gowok: Kamasutra Jawa Indonesia movie. This movie depicts the complex cultural values of Java through the conflict between love, social status, and morality. The method used is descriptive qualitative with the listen-and-note technique, where data is obtained from the characters' utterances that contain connotative meanings based on Leech's semantic theory (1981). The results show that connotative meanings in the movie’s dialogue not only function as language embellishments but also become the main source of energy in building dramatic atmosphere and the characters' inner conflicts. The connotations that emerge reflect the social, cultural, and emotional values of Javanese society, which is still bound by hierarchical structures and politeness. Through the use of symbol-laden language, this film presents a dramatization that not only evokes emotions but also provides a reflection of social reality.

This study used a quantitative approach with a comparative study design. The study population was all grade VIII junior high school students in Purwokerto with a purposive sampling technique totaling 100 students. 50 students of Muhammadiyah Boarding School Zam Zam as a boarding school and 50 students of SMP Negeri 4 Purwokerto as a nonboarding school. The data collection instrument was a valid and reliable assessment rubric. The data collection process was carried out through a performance test for writing observational report texts using LKPD containing instructions. Data analysis used descriptive statistics and independent sample t-test. The results showed that the average score of the ability to write observational report texts for boarding students was higher than for nonboarding students. The results of the independent sample t-test also showed a significant difference in the ability to write observational reports between boarding and nonboarding students.
