Abstract

The thesis, which is one of the scientific research activities, aims to find answers to a problem in a scientific manner. In educational thesis, the research activity is directed towards understanding various issues and phenomena in education, across all educational levels, and in every aspect. Thus, ideally, the thesis in community education should use social phenomena and issues as the source of its research problems. This study aims to provide an empirical overview of how social issues are used as research problems in community education thesis and how these issues have evolved in society over the past 10 years (2013-2022), as well as any possible correlations between the two. The research was conducted using a descriptive quantitative approach on 492 community education student thesis titles. The results show that the three main social issues in the thesis are the quality of education, human resource quality, and economic and welfare disparities, and these three major issues have different focuses compared to national social issues during the 10-year period. The discussion trend in the thesis is consistent with the basic concept of community education that examines the philosophy of education that underlies school society, encouraging opportunities for members of society, including individuals, schools, businesses, and public or private organizations, to become partners in meeting community needs. However, compared to national issues, the correlation between the social issues researched by students is very weak, and this is a challenge for community education stakeholders to minimize the gap between academic discussion and social phenomena in society.

Abstract

Since Indonesia was declared a pandemic, the majority of Skills and Training Institutions (STIs) have not been able to survive and have closed down. This is especially true for STIs that were designed for face-to-face learning and could not adapt to the change to digital-based learning. Meanwhile, the characteristics of adults who have various learning models, motivation, interests, and goals require individualization in learning, which is usually accommodated by face-to-face education. Therefore, this research aims to find out how the implementation of adult learning is carried out in non-formal education institutions, namely the Online Business School (SBO). This research uses a qualitative approach and descriptive method, with the aim of obtaining an overview of the implementation of adult education learning at the non-formal education unit, the Online Business School (SBO). The research findings show that as a training institution that had designed its training online long before the pandemic, SBO applies a learning model that is not much different from the training that has changed to online due to the social restrictions imposed by the Indonesian government. Nevertheless, the minimal implementation of adult learning still makes SBO an attractive program as indicated by an average of 50-60 learners and reaching its peak during the pandemic.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the influence of tutor competence on the English language proficiency of training participants. The researcher applied a quantitative correlational research design and used simple linear regression analysis. The population studied was all English language training participants in the Community Learning Center (CLC) of Banyuwangi Regency, with a total of 10 CLCs that provide English language training. The research was conducted over 5 months, from August to December 2021, with a sample size of 33 participants from 10 CLCs. Proportional random sampling technique was used to obtain the sample. Data was collected through the administration of a questionnaire as the primary method. The questionnaire was distributed to the 10 CLCs identified as the sample. The results showed that the tutor competence in teaching English has a score of 83.4%, indicating excellent competence, while the English language proficiency of the participants has a score of 65.4%, indicating moderate proficiency. The influence of tutor competence has a value of 0.405, which has a "moderately strong" coefficient interpretation, indicating a significant influence between tutor competence and English language proficiency. Additionally, the significance between the variables (X) Tutor Competence and (Y) English Language Proficiency had a sig value of 0.019, which indicates that if the significant value (0.019) < alpha (0.05), then Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted, which means there is an influence between tutor competence and the English language proficiency of training participants.
