Abstract

The European Union's move to issue the Renewable Energy Directive (RED) II policy is considered a discriminatory decision because it includes the elimination of palm-oil commodities which are claimed as triggers of deforestation. In response to this, Indonesia, one of the major palm-oil producing countries, has filed an official lawsuit to the World Trade Organization (WTO) for alleged discrimination against palm-oil by the European Union. In addition to inviting a strong response from palm-oil-producing countries, this EU policy has also sparked controversy over the EU's discriminatory behavior, whether it is motivated by environmental commitments or just protectionism for local EU vegetable oils. This is based on several behaviors of the European Union that are considered not in line with environmental commitments which in this study will be examined through the concept of Strategic Inconsistency in Contested Multilateralism by Faude & Parizek (2021). The results of the study show, from the issue of developing local European vegetable oils to the nickel issue involving Indonesia, the behavior of the European Union has shown a number of inconsistencies with its environmental commitments.

Abstract

The change in the paradigm of village development from "building villages" to "developing village" forced the village government to provide the right policies so that the expected development could be realized. However, the data that has so far been associated with the developing village index is quantitative and tends to be stagnant. This study aims to evaluate the village development index qualitatively. By using a comparative program after only evaluation approach and a qualitative descriptive research method that emphasizes how the community and village government interpret the programs that have been given before. The results of the study show different findings from the quantitative approach, especially on the Economic Resilience index, which seems to be no different from other villages in general in Indonesia. Even though it has the ideal potential to become an independent village. The recommendations resulting from this research are that it is necessary to maximize Access to Financial Institutions and Trade Service Centers so that their potential can be developed towards an independent village.

Abstract

This study aims to measure how much influence village funds have on community empowerment in Pujon Kidul Tourism Village using quantitative methods. This study collected primary data from closed questionnaires which were distributed randomly to 100 respondents including village government, youth leaders and community leaders. This research questionnaire is valid and reliable while the results of this study have been tested. The results of this study indicate that the predictor size of the variation of the independent variable on the dependent variable is 0.528 and every time there is an addition to the independent variable, an addition of 0.768 will also be experienced by the dependent variable. With these results, the conclusion is that there is an influence of village funds on community empowerment which implies that village funds have a positive influence on community empowerment. This positive influence can occur due to the adequacy of village fund financing for community empowerment as a priority area in the Pujon Kidul Tourism Village. By disbursing village funds to tourism villages, in this case, village communities are empowered.

Abstract

like to have limited social-economy material advantage, Switzerland's action to actively and continuously participate in the Arctic Council is an interesting topic to discuss. Existing literature has captured Switzerland's actions to fight against the climate crisis, yet missed to address why it carried to participate in the Council amidst likely-limited materialistic returns. Deploying Foreign Policy Analysis and Resources Based Theory of Soft Power as an analytical approach and qualitative approach, this study argues that Switzerland's Foreign Policy which specifically emphasizes action in climate protection and global environment is the reason behind its active participation in various global communities, including in the Arctic Council. Interestingly, Switzerland utilizes science as an instrument of diplomacy and constructs its identity as a global science policy advisor in the environmental sector. Thus, the global climate crisis issues have been an opportunity for Switzerland as a small power to enhance its bargaining position in international politics through science as a soft power.

Abstract

This paper discusses the practice of political communication carried out by regional head candidates in the City of Kediri in the 2018 local elections in East Java. This paper focuses on conducting in-depth tracking of the framing of ecological issues in campaign practices carried out by regional head candidates in the 2018 local elections. This study aims to gain an understanding and knowledge related to the political communication practices of regional head candidates in responding to ecological issues in political contestation locally in East Java. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach that focuses on collecting data through interviews and documentation related to the political communication strategies of the 2018 Kediri mayoral candidates in communicating ecological issues to the public. The study results show that the political communication practices carried out by candidates in the 2018 regional elections have yet to make ecological issues a critical public issue. This is reflected in the campaign's content, which still focuses on socio-economic issues that prioritize aspects of infrastructure development for the community, not directing environmental conservation practices to support sustainable development.
