Abstract

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are closely related to lifestyle, particularly physical activity and the consumption of fruits and vegetables, which continue to be public health challenges. Organic farmers as a specific group have the potential for lower NCD risk due to the nature of their work and a lifestyle that tends to be more health-conscious. Organic farmers are known to have diverse physical activity patterns and close access to fruits and vegetables. This study aims to identify the physical activity habits and fruit and vegetable consumption of organic farmers. The research design used is quantitative descriptive. The population of this study consisted of organic farmers in Kecamatan Jatinangor and 30 respondents were selected using the snowball sampling approach. This study employed the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) as research instruments. Data were analyzed using a quantitative descriptive approach, including frequency, proportion, and percentage calculations. The results showed that most organic farmers in Kecamatan Jatinangor were classified in high physical activity, totaling 27 respondents (90%), good fruit consumption with 26 respondents (86.7%), and good vegetable consumption with 28 respondents (93.3%). Therefore, it can be concluded that the majority of organic farmers in Kecamatan Jatinangor engage in high levels of physical activity as well as good fruit and vegetable consumption. Future studies are recommended to adopt qualitative approaches to explore factors influencing physical activity also fruit and vegetable consumption, as well as to collaborate with healthcare services, educational institutions, and farmer communities to support comprehensive health promotion programs. Keywords: Consumption, fruit, organic farmer, physical activity, vegetable.

Abstract

Children with Special Needs (CSN/ABK) face complex nutritional risk due to sensory, motor, and medication challenges, yet parents and companion teachers often lack specific and credible nutrition literacy. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a digital health literacy-based nutrition education intervention in improving the nutrition knowledge of CSN parents and teachers. This study utilizes a quasi-experimental design without a control group (one-group pretest–posttest design) involving 30 participants, comprising parents and teachers at SLB Ulaka Penca, through a nutritional education approach known as the ENERGY (Education of Nutrition with Digital Literacy) program. The intervention was carried out over approximately three months, consisting of three educational sessions. Each session lasted for about 120 minutes and was delivered through field-based education integrated with digital media. The curriculum encompassed balanced nutrition for children with special needs, nutritional issues and requirements, the daily application of balanced nutrition, and the utilization of digital literacy, further reinforced by documentary videos. For the statistical analysis, knowledge data were processed using the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test, a non-parametric method necessitated by the non-normal distribution of the posttest data. The result shows that a significant increase in the average knowledge score was observed, rising from approx 55.00 to approx 85.00. The Wilcoxon test demonstrated a highly significant difference between pretest and posttest scores p = 0.000. The digital health literacy-based nutrition education intervention proved to be highly effective in improving nutrition knowledge. Utilizing easily accessible digital platforms (WhatsApp and digital booklets) is an appropriate strategy to bridge the gap in specialist nutrition information and ensure educational sustainability for CSN caregivers. Keywords: Children with special needs, digital health literacy, nutrition education.

Abstract

Adequate hydration is essential for maintaining kidney function and physiological balance. However, awareness of sufficient daily water intake as a preventive health behavior remains limited, particularly among patients and family caregivers in hospital settings. Improving hydration knowledge through educational interventions may contribute to early prevention of kidney health problems. This community service program implemented a pre–post educational intervention in a hospital setting involving 66 participants consisting of patients and their family caregivers. Health education was delivered through interactive lectures, discussions, and educational leaflets focusing on recommended daily water intake and the role of hydration in maintaining kidney health. Knowledge was measured using a researcher-developed questionnaire consisting of five questions related to adequate water consumption. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired sample t-test. Participants’ knowledge improved significantly after the intervention. The mean knowledge score increased from 63.63 ± 20.12 at pretest to 94.54 ± 12.31 at posttest. Statistical analysis confirmed a significant difference between measurements (mean difference = −30.91; t = −10.85; df = 65; p < 0.001). Hospital-based hydration education effectively improves knowledge regarding adequate water intake. This intervention may serve as a simple and scalable strategy for integrating kidney health promotion into routine hospital education programs. Keywords: Adequate water intake, hydration education, kidney health, patient knowledge

Abstract

Diphtheria is an infectious disease caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae that can lead to various complications, including death in individuals with incomplete immunization status. The province of Bali, particularly Jembrana, is an area with high population mobility where diphtheria cases are rarely reported. However, in 2025, one suspected case of diphtheria was identified, necessitating an investigation to determine the source of transmission. The investigation was conducted as a descriptive observational study using a case study approach. Data were collected through field investigations, clinical examinations, and laboratory tests. Based on the investigation results, this was the first reported case in the past three years, occurring on March 13, 2025. The case occurred in Jembrana, the gateway to the island of Bali, which has high population mobility. The patient was a 7 year old boy with a complete immunization status; however, he had a history of close contact with family members who had recently returned from an area with a history of a diphtheria outbreak, making him a potential asymptomatic carrier. Laboratory testing using culture methods yielded negative results, likely due to delayed sample submission and reduced bacterial viability, preventing growth on the culture medium. Under these conditions, the RT-qPCR method has the potential to detect the presence of Corynebacterium diphtheriae DNA even when culture results are negative. Vaccination status acts as a protective factor, but does not completely prevent infection. The most significant factor in transmission is close contact with family members who have a history of travel to areas with diphtheria outbreaks, with the possible involvement of asymptomatic carriers. Management of suspected diphtheria cases requires the immediate administration of Anti-Diphtheria Serum (ADS). These findings underscore the need to strengthen active surveillance, regular monitoring, and public education to prevent an increase in cases. Keywords: Diphtheria, immunization, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, asymptomatic carrier.

Abstract

Community service activities were conducted in Kalirejo Village, Lawang Subdistrict, Malang Regency, targeting the women of the PKK RW 04 as the primary beneficiaries. The objective of this initiative was to enhance understanding of the importance of physical activity in preventing Diabetes Mellitus, particularly among the aging population. The activity was conducted over two sessions, including diabetes exercises, health check-ups, and educational sessions on diabetes and physical activity. The pre-test and post-test results showed an average score increase from 81.6 to 89.14, indicating an improvement in participants' knowledge after attending the educational sessions on diabetes and physical activity. Based on health check-ups, the 50-59 age group was identified as the highest-risk group, with an average body mass index of 29.9 (obesity) and an average blood sugar level of 133 mg/dL. Metabolic disorders in the 30-39 age group underscore the importance of prevention starting at a productive age to reduce the risk of diabetes. Overall, this activity was deemed effective in enhancing participants' awareness and understanding of the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle as a preventive measure against diabetes, particularly for the productive age group. Keywords: Physical activity; diabetes; gymnastics
